The synthesis of monodisperse alkanes with long chains
This thesis discusses reasons for the interest in monodisperse long chain alkanes and describes attempts, past and present, to synthesise such molecules. Chapter 1 discusses why the synthesis of such molecules are important and the objectives of this project. Chapter 2 reviews the methods previous groups have devised to prepare pure samples of long chain alkanes. In particular, work carried out by Whiting et al. at Bristol, whose scheme formed the basis of the early work in Durham. Chapter 3 describes the work in Durham and improvements which were made to Whiting's method, allowing the synthesis of longer chain lengths and greater quantities of materials to be achieved. Chapter 4 provides a summary of the practical work carried out by the author. Chapter 5 gives experimental details of the work described in Chapter 4
An exploration of the construct of Masters level clinical practice
This study aimed to explore the construct of Masters level clinical practice. A mixed methods approach converging quantitative and qualitative data was undertaken.
Consensus of behaviours indicative of the construct was explored through a quantitative Delphi study. Participants represented a total population sample of Masters course tutors in healthcare (n = 48). Round 1 requested behaviours indicative of the construct. Quantitative content analysis informed the behaviours explored in round 2, where participants rated their relative importance. Round 3 asked participants to rank the behaviours in order of importance. Descriptive and inferential analysis enabled interpretation of consensus.
The construct was also explored through an in-depth qualitative case study, using semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Purposive sampling selected the `case' of a manipulative physiotherapy course and the participants for the study. Analytic categories were derived from the data using a constant comparative process until saturation of the data were achieved. Theoretical propositions to identify the components of the construct were developed.
The response rate for the Delphi study was very good (79.1%, 77.1% and 70.8% for rounds 1-3 respectively). Rounds 1 and 2 achieved good consensus enabling 21 agreed 'important' behaviours to be taken into round 3. The ranking process in round 3 afforded consensus overall, but also highlighted some differences between professions regarding the prioritisation of components of the construct. There was good convergence of the data with the case study, with clinical reasoning and knowledge identified as the most important components of the construct.
The study has identified generic components of the construct of Masters level clinical practice. In addition specific components and their prioritisation for the speciality of manipulative physiotherapy are identified. Development of this work by exploring several case studies to enable further consideration of professions and specialities through analytic generalisation would be beneficial

Painting in Poetry and Poetry in Painting: Aesthetic Reflections in D.G. Rossetti
Bright eyed and bushy-tailed poems and paintings are very rare, so are their past masters who create them. The history of the world literature is often brimming with such rare authors as are the unparalleled amalgamator of paintings and writings. In this field, the names, which are counted highly with boundless esteem, are of William Blake, Lewis Carroll, Hans Christian Andersen, Elizabeth Bishop, Leo Tolstoy, Lorraine Hansberry, Victor Hugo, Sylvia Plath, George Sand, Jack Kerouac, Herman Hesse, Gunter Grass, Charles Bukowski, Henry Miller, William S. Burroughs, E.E. Cummings, Tennessee Williams, Carlo Levi, J.B. Priestley, and R.N. Tagore. Undisputedly, D.G. Rossetti is one such figure. When the world literature is deconstructed, two clusters of the authors appear on the literary landscape. The first cluster consists of those authors who are painters and writers as well. The painters who have painted the literary pieces of the authors fall into the second cluster. D.G. Rossetti somewhere stands in- between. He is painter (especially illustrator) as well author-poet. But the flabbergasting certitude is that his elite poetry is found in his pieces of mural, and his elite mural in his pieces of poesy. His all creations, be they paintings, or poems, fall in three categories. In the first faction fall such pieces of his poems as are only poems—without any illustration, in the second faction fall such pieces of his paintings as are without poems, while in the third faction fall such pieces of his paintings as are with poems, or with mythical illustrations, or on certain literary pieces. Nothing to say about these groups, but one thing is clear that all of them possess aesthetic reflections. Keeping this very fact in mind, the present article aims at exploring, analyzing, and presenting the three-dimensional view in Rossetti painting and poetry with the help of the textual analysis, visual methods, and descriptive and explorative approach

Responses to saline drinking water in offspring born to ewes fed high salt during pregnancy
We have studied the fetal programming of lambs born to ewes exposed to high salt during pregnancy. In the present study, we hypothesise that salt-programmed lambs may not need to drink as much saline water as control lambs and that voluntary feed intake of salt-programmed lambs would be reduced. We used two groups of lambs born to ewes fed either a high salt (13% NaCl) diet during pregnancy (S-lambs; n=12) or control animals born to ewes fed a conventional (0.5% NaCl) diet during pregnancy (C-lambs; n=12). Animals were offered ad libitum amounts of saline drinking water containing 1.5% NaCl for 2 days. Results indicated that there was a significant difference between fetal origin of the lamb (i.e. between C and S-lambs) and time (day 1 and 2) on water intake (P=0.055), urinary output (P=0.002), and sodium excretion (P=0.002). There was an interaction between fetal origin of the lambs and time (day 1 and 2) on the area under the curve (AUC) for the plasma concentration of aldosterone (P=0.017). Aldosterone concentration for C-lambs ranged from 167 to 196pg/ml over days 1 and 2, whilst S-lambs reduced their aldosterone by two-thirds from day 1 to 2, from 214±24 to 74±8pg/ml. A novel result was a marked difference in feed intake between C and S-lambs, where S-lambs consumed approximately 0.5kg DM/day (35%) less than C-lambs which was associated with a decrease in insulin secretion with time in both S and C-lambs. In conclusion, feeding a high salt diet to pregnant ewes affected the physiological responses of their offspring to the consumption of saline water during a period of 2 days illustrating that fetal programming changed the temporal pattern of how the offspring adapt to a load of ingested salt.S.N. A European masters in renewable energy - alleviating skills shortages for the photovoltaic market
The current rapid growth of the PV and renewable industry may stall if the shortage of appropriately trained people, required to power the expansion, is not addressed, The EU needs an integrated training strategy to solve the skills shortage. In response to this need, a consortium of European universities jointly developed the European Masters in Renewable Energy. The first intake of students commenced in October 2002, marking the beginning of a unique European training program in renewable energy.
