Using MetaPrisms for Performance Improvement in Wireless Communications
Full text linkIn this paper, we put forth the idea of metaprism, a passive and non-reconfigurable metasurface acting as a metamirror with frequency-dependent reflecting properties within the bandwidth of the signal. We show that, with an appropriate design of the metaprism, it is possible to control that each data stream in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is reflected in the desired direction by properly assigning subcarriers to users without the need of control channels and dedicated channel state information (CSI) estimation schemes. Furthermore, the metaprism can also be designed so that it focuses the signal towards a specific position depending on the subcarrier, provided that the user is in the near-field region of the metaprism, with consequent path-loss reduction. A critical discussion is also presented about the path-loss reduction obtainable from metaprisms and, more generally, from metasurfaces. The numerical results show that this solution is effective in extending the coverage in areas experiencing severe non line-of-sight (NLOS) channel conditions, thus making it an interesting alternative to reconfigurable metasurfaces when low-cost, no energy consumption, and backward compatibility with existing wireless standards are required

No full textComputed tomography (CT) is a powerful medical imaging technique, based on the measurement of x-rays transmitted through an object, able to represent the morphological and anatomical information of a human body section. Since its introduction in the first 1970s, CT has experienced a dramatic evolution in terms of resolution (minimum size of a distinguishable object), scanning time (time necessary to acquire all the measurements) and elaboration time (time to process the measurements through a computer). This chapter aims to report on the basic working principles and hardware components of CT. In the last section, emphasis is focused on spectral CT, which improves the technique performances in terms of chemical tissue characterization
Principles of radiological imaging: The cathodic tube
No full textThis chapter focuses on the working principles and principal components and issues of the cathodic tube, essential part of powerful medical imaging techniques such analog and digital radiography and computed tomography. Cathodic tube emits X-rays photons, which hit the patient body and are partially attenuated. The transmitted X-rays are detected by image plates or solid state detectors in order to represent the density of human body tissues and organs. Energies of the emitted X-rays usually range between 20 and 150keV, depending on the specific application of the medical imaging technique and are determined by power supply applied to the cathodic tube and by the target material. Peculiar characteristics of the cathodic tube (such as the “heel effect”) will be exploited along this chapter along with the physical phenomena ruling the X-ray production
Il trasferimento entro le mura. Ambrogio Massari e il santuario medievale di S. Oliva
No full textLa monografia sul complesso di Sant'Oliva a Cori, patronato rinascimentale da ascrivere al generale degli Agostiniani Ambrogio Massari e al cardinale Guillaume de Estouteville, è stata l'occasione per analizzare anche le vicende medievali del santuario, così come di ripercorre le tappe di acquartieramento dei frati eremitani nel borgo del Lazio meridionale. Giunta nel pieno Duecento, la comunità religiosa dimorò per quasi due secoli fuori le mura del borgo; qui fu elevato il convento secondo un modello insediativo da tempo in uso nell'Ordine, sebbene non codificato dalle Costituzioni. Con l'ascesa del Massari, i frati si trasferirono nella chiesa patronale di Cori, dove avviarono un progetto di profonda riqualificazione, che tuttavia consente ancora oggi di ricostruire le forme medievali di Sant'Oliva, fondata tra il XII e il XIII secolo.
The monograph about the convent of Sant'Oliva in Cori, Renaissance patronage attribuited to the Augustinian general Ambrogio Massari and cardinal Guillaume de Estouteville, has been the occasion to analyze the events of the medieval sanctuary and to retrace the steps of the quartering of the Hermitan friars in this center of southern Lazio. Arrived in the thirteenth century, for almost two hundred years the community lived outside the urban walls. Here a convent was built according the settlement pattern in use inside the Order, although not codified in the Constitutions. With the ascent of Massari, the friars moved into the local patronal church, where they started a deep requalification, that still allows the reconstruction of the primitive forms of Sant'Oliva, founded between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries
