    The Libraries at Mason

The past year, 2012, was an exciting time for Mason. The university celebrated its 40th anniversary as an independent institution, and the Fenwick Library celebrated its 45th anniversary as the first, and now, central library of the Mason library system. Notably, also in mid-year, Dr. Ángel Cabrera became Mason’s sixth president

Diversity at Mason: The Pursuit of Transformative Education

The Diversity at Mason series has been produced by the university's Diversity Research Group, which consists of an interdisciplinary group of faculty, administrators, and students who have been meeting once a semester since Spring 2004. The group has come together not out of any formal directive, but from a shared interest in the topic. And the topic? Each meeting begins with the same reminder: George Mason is a highly diverse institution, and it is diverse in ways that are fluid and multidimensional. Our students represent an extraordinary diversity of geographic origin, religion, age, and disability; they are immigrants and the children of immigrants, refugees and the children of refugees, veterans of American military service and the children of those in the military; they represent traditional American race and ethnic categories as well as those forging new understandings of sexuality and gender. The Diversity Research Group has been founded on the conviction that the breadth of our student diversity merits study. What is the educational impact of such diversity? What does diversity mean in this context? How is this diversity understood by our students, faculty, and staff? Like the other volumes in the Diversity at Mason series, this fifth issue shows us the complexity beneath questions

Mason Impact, OSCAR, and Undergraduate Education at Mason

    No full text
Mason has taken a new initiative for enhancing its undergraduate education, which fits under the big umbrella of Mason Impact. This initiative has been created to ensure that our graduates are the next generation of leaders, alumni who are impacting the world and look back on their Mason experience as the foundation of their success. Mason Impact builds on the legacy of Virginia and Mason, our unique location and variety of academic programs, our expanding challenge-driven research agenda, our experience in being a leader in undergraduate scholarship, and our civic responsibility, to create a unique Mason identity. This poster will describe the architecture under the new Mason Impact Umbrella, which consists of three main categories: 1) engaged citizens, 2) well-rounded scholars, and 3) prepared to act. In the first category, students will take advantage of integrative, innovative, and experiential learning opportunities on campus, regionally, and globally. In the second category, Mason core and OSCAR will be the main drivers for opportunities through undergraduate courses and undergraduate research, respectively. Finally, in the third category, students will learn to translate their knowledge and skills into action and solve real-world problems via entrepreneurship experience and career guidance.Find information about the Curriculum Impact Grants:àhttps://provost.gmu.edu/mason-impact/curriculum-impact-grants/For information about 2017 grant proposals:ààhttps://provost.gmu.edu/mason-impact/curriculum-impact-grants/curriculum-impact-grant-call-for-proposals-2017

Destination Mason: Engaging International Students at George Mason University

    No full text
This proposal is for a poster on an initiative at INTO Mason called âDestination Mason,â which encourages INTO Mason students to get involved on campus. The pilot combines university events with required classroom assignments. Students attend six campus events in Arts, Athletics, English practice, Global Competency, Career Readiness and Well-Being. For the graduate version, categories are altered to include more academic/disciplinary aspects. Upon completion, students receive a letter of recommendation from INTO Masonâs Executive Director and an invitation to an end-of-year celebration. There are two main goals for this initiative: to provide another incentive for INTO Mason students to become more engaged in the Mason community and to further the internationalization process to which Mason has committed itself. The initiative is being piloted this semester in several courses across INTO Masonâs three programs: Academic English, the Undergraduate International Year One program, and the Graduate Pathways program. Our poster will display the results of the pilot including data on participation with student and faculty reactions, completion rates, and a brief review of literature on international student engagement. We will also have a mechanism for faculty/staff to share their ideas on the theme of international student engagement on campus. We hope to provide a model of ways international students have successfully engaged with Mason activities, to open a conversation about ways others might wish to facilitate rewarding engagement opportunities for international and domestic students, and demonstrate INTO Masonâs awareness of the student benefits from engaging more with Mason activities. &nbsp
