H.E. Rainier letter to the Equal Suffrage League, September 9, 1914
H.E. Rainier wrote this letter on September 9, 1914, addressed to the Equal Suffrage League, to inform the League of a debate Rainier would be participating in. Rainier requested facts and statistics that would help support women's suffrage in the debate on the issue of equal suffrage. Rainier requested statistics especially on the rates of divorce in states that had already achieved suffrage for women.
The Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association was formed in 1912, after the Ohio Constitutional Convention elected to bring to a vote the question of removing the words "white male" from the state constitution with regard to voting rights. Headquartered in the Chamber of Commerce building in Columbus, Ohio, the organization put out regular publications, organized public speeches and meetings, distributed literature and held parades in support of the suffrage movement. Women's suffrage in Ohio was defeated in a special election in 1912 and again in 1914 and 1916 before a resolution narrowly passed in 1917 allowing municipal voting by women in Columbus. In 1920, the 19th Amendment passed, extending the vote to women and prohibiting state and federal government from denying suffrage on the basis of sex

Development of improved H.E. adhesives systems. Quarterly report, January, February, March 1964
Optimum mix of allyl glycidyl ether, needed as a thinner for Aerobond H-7, appears to be about 10 pph AGE which reduces viscosity to 165 cps. This reduces torsional shear strength to 930 in-lbs/in{sup 2} versus 1616 in-lbs/in{sup 2} in tests this quarter and values as low as 520 in-lbs/in{sup 2} reported previously. Water permeability was measured again for Adiprene, Perm-A-Lon and Estane; Aerobond H-7 was also measured using a filter paper backing material. The value for Estane was lower than in previous tests, 0.27 mg/cm{sup 2}/hour versus 1.08 and 1.15 mg/cm{sup 2} hour reported earlier. The disc extrudability test was set up and preliminary data were gathered for three lots of LX-0201 and several tile materials. The experiment to detect deficiencies in Adiprene L-100 as an adhesive for H.E. caused by aging is in its third year. Tensile strength results indicated no deterioration; but shear strength results were questionable. In both cases, breakage occurred in the H.E

Characteristics of H.E. and H.E. systems. Quarterly report, October--December, 1964
Several samples of HMX to be used in LX-04-1 were particle sized and reported in this report. Most of the lots sized were very similar, with the major differences in the lots being at 2{micro}. Several counts in ``Rainbow`` Lot 26B of LX-04-1, made to obtain a color and weight distribution in several samples, and also a color count made in each sieve on a granulation analysis, show each color to be equally distributed; i.e., {approx} one-third of each color, green, yellow and white LX-04-1 granules, was present in the sample. Photographs and particle size curves of recrystallized PETN used in LX-02-1 are presented. These data were obtained by examining the original PETN used in a lot of LX-02-1, then performing several milling operations and recovering the PETN from the binder for another examination. The majority of the PETN appears to be crushed or broken in the first six passes on the three-roll mill with smaller changes taking place in the two-roll mill. The final {Pi} shows most of the PETN to be concentrated in the 4 to 8{micro} region. Photographs of two production lots of LX-02-1 subjected to a milling operation are also included. A description of the procedure used to recover the PETN from the LX-02-1 binder is included. Several solvents for the LX-02-1 binder and for different H.E.`s are listed. These were examined in an effort to find a new elutant to use with LX-04-1. The effects of different milling times on the binder have been examined by checking the solubilities in several of the solvents
Mathematical models of gear rattle in Roots blower vacuum pumps
This paper is concerned with the modelling of gear rattle in Roots blower vacuum pumps. Analysis of experimental data reveals that the source of the noise and vibration problem is the backlash nonlinearity due to gear teeth losing and re-establishing contact. We derive simple non-smooth models for the lightly damped, lightly loaded dynamics of the pump. The models include a time-dependent forcing term which arises from the eccentric mounting of the gears acting at the gross rotation rate. We use a combination of explicit construction, asymptotic methods and numerical techniques to classify complicated dynamic behaviour in realistic parametric regimes. We first present a linear analysis of permanent-contact motions, and derive upper bounds on eccentricity for silent operation. We then develop a nonlinear analysis of ‘backlash oscillations’, where the gears lose and re-establish contact, corresponding to noisy pump operation. We show that noisy solutions can coexist with silent ones, explaining why geared systems can rattle intermittently. Finally, we consider possible design solutions, and show implications for pump design in terms of existence and stability of solutions.<br/

Characteristics of H.E. and H.E. systems. Quarterly report, April 1964--June 1964
Sieve analyses of several samples of HMX received from LRL were performed again because of the spread ({approx} 5% to 8%) in some of the initial results below the 10{mu} point. In general, the samples had the same distribution as reported in the fourth quarterly report of 1963, but the scatter in the <10{mu} region was less. HMX used in LX-04-1 production lots (4A and B 64, 5A and B 64 and 6A and B 64). The abrupt {open_quotes}dip{close_quotes} in the particle distribution curve at 8{mu} was investigated. The {open_quotes}large sieve{close_quotes} elutant was thought to have been the cause, or at least affected it. All all-sieve series was run using the usual <10{mu} elutant (Freon BF with 10% isobutyl acetate) rather than the HMX saturated isobutyl acetate normally used as the elutant from 350{mu} to 10{mu}. The results from three samples of HMX so sieved were not significantly different from the samples sieved by the standard procedure. A procedure for sieving PETN using the same range of sieves as with HMX has been included. This is essentially the same as the procedure for HMX except for a change in elutant system
