    A Study on Comprehensibility of Concept Descriptions

    A transformation of descriptions of concepts without a change of meaning makes sense under a heterogeneous space of concepts, like Explanation-Based Learning (EBL) under the operational criterion. Under finite awareness the heterogeneousness is necessary, because agents have to select certain finite sets of concepts under criterion. Comprehensibility seems to come from the finite awareness, and it should be realized by such a transformation of descriptions. In this paper, we discuss comprehensibility of descriptions using a formalism of first order logic with finite awareness, and a couple of characterisations. Methods to transform descriptions in a sense of goodness discussed in the paper. The address is temporary.     Development of X-ray Detectors Using Gas Electron Multiplier Foil for Cultural Properties

    For investigation into cultural properties, X-ray radiography and material analysis using X-ray diffraction have played important roles in the field of conservation science of cultural properties. Moreover, the demand for in situ analysis will increase further. In this situation, it is valuable for conservation scientists to develop new X-ray detectors that are suitable for their own studies. Gas Electron Multiplier foil (GEM) can be one of the powerful tools to develop a simple and portable detector at less cost. This article provides basic ideas about new X-ray detectors using GEMs for X-ray radiography filled with Xe-based mixture gas and for X-ray diffraction filled with Ar-based mixture gas. The design and specifications for these detectors have already been fixed and these detectors are now under construction.     Development of Non-invasive Measurement Systems for Evaporation on the Surface of Cultural Properties

    It is important to understand the water content and evaporation on the surface of mural paintings in order to prevent exfoliation of pigments, deposition of salts, fungi growth and so forth. However, there have not been many researches on such measurements because non-invasive measurements in high-humidity environment are difficult. In this study, a measurement system was first constructed using two small dataloggers. Measurements were conducted on the surface of the stone at Kumamoto Prefectural Ancient Buried Mound Museum. Evaporation on the surface of the stone was identified from the gradient of absolute humidity calculated from measured values of temperature and relative humidity. One of the drawbacks of this method is that the data-logger is poor in humidity resistance and inaccurate in a high-humidity environment. Temperature and humidity sensors which have better humidity resistance were selected to develop a new measurement system for application at humid sites. The new measurement system is composed of a control board Arduino Mega 2560, which controls the digital signals from sensors and records the data on a micro SD card. In addition, it is also valuable to develop methods for evaluating quantitatively the conditions for X-ray radiography ─ for instance, X-ray tube voltage and irradiation time. For this purpose, the GEANT4 simulation software is one of the candidate tools.     X-ray radiography has played an important role in the field of conservation science of cultural properties. Moreover, the demand for in-situ analysis will increase further. In this situation, it is valuable for conservation scientists to develop new X-ray detectors that are suitable for their own studies. A prototype detector, essential part of which is composed of Gas Electron Multiplier foil (GEM), for X-ray radiography has been produced. In order to obtain two dimensional images, a C-MOS sensor module was installed in the detector. The sensor covers an area of 23.0mm by 50.0mm and the pixel size is 100μm. A lead block and an X-ray test-chart were selected as objects and two dimensional images were obtained by irradiating X-ray. From the result of data analysis, it is verified that signals due to X-ray were detected by using the GEM detector and C-MOS sensor module.journal articl
