Beyond the Hype: Toward a Concrete Adoption of the Fair and Responsible Use of AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a fast-changing technology that is having a profound impact on our society, from education to industry. Its applications cover a wide range of areas, such as medicine, military, engineering and research. The emergence of AI and Generative AI have significant potential to transform society, but they also raise concerns about transparency, privacy, ownership, fair use, reliability, and ethical considerations. The Generative AI adds complexity to the existing problems of AI due to its ability to create machine-generated data that is barely distinguishable from human-generated data. Bringing to the forefront the issue of responsible and fair use of AI. The security, safety and privacy implications are enormous, and the risks associated with inappropriate use of these technologies are real. Although some governments, such as the European Union and the United States, have begun to address the problem with recommendations and proposed regulations, it is probably not enough. Regulatory compliance should be seen as a starting point in a continuous process of improving the ethical procedures and privacy risk assessment of AI systems. The need to have a baseline to manage the process of creating an AI system even from an ethics and privacy perspective becomes progressively more important In this study, we discuss the ethical implications of these advances and propose a conceptual framework for the responsible, fair, and safe use of AI
C3: Cluster Clustering Cosmology. II. First Detection of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations Peak in the Three-point Correlation Function of Galaxy Clusters
Third-order statistics of the cosmic density field provides a powerful cosmological probe containing synergistic information to the more commonly explored second-order statistics. Here, we exploit a spectroscopic catalog of 72,563 clusters of galaxies extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), providing the first detection of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak in the three-point correlation function (3PCF) of galaxy clusters. We measure and analyze both the connected and the reduced 3PCF of SDSS clusters from intermediate (r ~ 10 Mpc h-1) up to large (r ~ 140 Mpc h-1) scales, exploring a variety of different configurations. From the analysis of reduced 3PCF at intermediate scales, in combination with the analysis of the two-point correlation function, we constrain both the cluster linear and nonlinear bias parameters, b 1 = 2.75 0.03 and b 2 = 1.2 0.5. We analyze the measurements of the 3PCF at larger scales, comparing them with theoretical models. The data show clear evidence of the BAO peak in different configurations, which appears more visible in the reduced 3PCF rather than in the connected one. From the comparison between theoretical models that do or do not consider the BAO peak, we obtain a quantitative estimate of this evidence, with a 2 between 2 and 94, depending on the considered configuration. Finally, we set up a generic framework to estimate the expected signal-to-noise ratio of the BAO peak in the 3PCF, exploring different possible definitions that can be used to forecast the most favorable configurations to be explored in future surveys, and applying it to the case of the Euclid mission
Thermal expansion anomalies of R(Fe, M)(12) (R=Y, Nd; M=Mo and Si)
Structural and thermal-expansion anomaly studies on R(Fe,M)(12) (R=Nd and and Y, M=Mo and Si) compounds were performed by x-ray diffraction. Mo atoms occupy the 8i site. While Si atoms occupy the 8f and 8j sites but not the 8i site. Thermal-expansion anomaly shows only in ab plane in the Mo compounds, while becomes very weak and along with only the c axis in the Si compounds. The anomaly was attributed to the contribution of the interactions of short Fe-Fe distances similar to the previous explanation on other R-Fe intermetallics and that of other strongly positive interactions such as 8j-8j. AMICO galaxy clusters in KiDS-DR3: Evolution of the luminosity function between z = 0.1 and z = 0.8
Aims. By means of the r-band luminosity function (LF) of galaxies in a sample of about 4000 clusters detected by the cluster finder AMICO in the KiDS-DR3 area of about 400 deg2, we studied the evolution with richness and redshift of the passive evolving (red), star-forming (blue), and total galaxy populations. This analysis was performed for clusters in the redshift range [0.1, 0.8] and in the mass range [1013 M⊙, 1015 M⊙]. Methods. To compute LFs, we binned the luminosity distribution in magnitude and statistically subtracted the background. Then, we divided the cluster sample in bins of both redshift and richness/mass. We stacked LF counts in each 2D bin for the total, red, and blue galaxy populations; finally, we fitted the stacked LF with a Schechter function and studied the trend of its parameters with redshift and richness/mass. Results. We found a passive evolution with z for the bright part of the LF for the red and total populations and no significant trends for the faint galaxies. The mass/richness dependence is clear for the density parameter φ∗, increasing with richness, and for the total population faint end, which is shallower in the rich clusters
Applying Machine Learning to Weather and Pollution Data Analysis for a Better Management of Local Areas: The Case of Napoli, Italy
Local pollution is a problem that affects urban areas and has effects on the quality of life and on health conditions. In order to not develop strict measures and to better manage territories, the national authorities have applied a vast range of predictive models. Actually, the application of machine learning has been studied in the last decades in various cases with various declination to simplify this problem. In this paper, we apply a regression-based analysis technique to a dataset containing official historical local pollution and weather data to look for criteria that allow forecasting critical conditions. The methods was applied to the case study of Napoli, Italy, where the local environmental protection agency manages a set of fixed monitoring stations where both chemical and meteorological data are recorded. The joining of the two raw dataset was overcome by the use of a maximum inclusion strategy as performing the joining action with”outer” mode. Among the four different regression models applied, namely the Linear Regression Model calculated with Ordinary Least Square (LN-OLS), the Ridge regression Model (Ridge), the Lasso Model (Lasso) and Supervised Nearest Neighbors Regression (KNN), the Ridge regression model was found to better perform with an R2 (Coefficient of Determination) value equal to 0.77 and low value for both MAE (Mean Absolute Error) and MSE (Mean Squared Error), equal to 0.12 and 0.04 respectively

Hepatitis c infection and peripheral neuropathy
An association between Hepatitis C Virus infection (IICV) and Peripheral Neuropathy (PN) has recently been reported This association has been explained by the presence of essential mixed cryoglobulinaemia. However most studies were retrospective and performed on patients with long-standing hepatic injection Further, the frequency and risk factors for peripheral neuropathy in HCV patients are not well defined. We performed a prospecive study on the frequency of PN in a consecutive series of HCV patients Method. One hundred and forty-two consecutive patients with HCV diagnosed according to serological studies by detection of anti-HCV antibodies and viral RNA in serum, were recruited from a Hepatology Department between June 1996-March 1997. The patients (91 M, 51F, average of 49.4+14 years, range 22-78 years) showed a mean period of infection of 37.8 months (1-80 months). All patients underwent neurological examination. On this basis, they were divided into four groups as concerns possible PN: pts. with only symptoms (group I), pts. with only signs (group 2), pts. with both symptoms and signs (group 3) and pts. without symptoms and signs (group 4). All patients with signs and/or symptoms were invited to come forward for electrophysiological examination.Results. We found 23 pts. (16.2%) in group 1, 2 pts. (1.4%) in group 2; 19 pts. (14.1%) in group 3 and 97 pts. (68.3%) in group 4 Cryoglobulinaemia was present in 42 pts. (29.7%): 12 pts. of group I, 2 pts. of group 2, 7 pts. of group 3 and 20 pts. of group 4 KMG and ENG study is in progress. Comment Our results show that PN symptoms in HCV infection are rather common finding. Results, neurophysiological investigations and factors related to PN will be presented
A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
