The effectiveness of commercially available wetting agents for combating on-site soil water repellency in sandy soil
Soil hydrophobicity reported to be a worldwide problem throughout the world and Australia affecting diverse soil types particularly soil with high sand content. Soil hydrophobicity affect surface and subsurface hydrology, enhance overland flow and soil erosion, reduce seed germination and crop growth, cause preferential flow and associated leaching of nutrients and agrochemicals. The cause of soil water repellency is believed to be organic coating of the soils particles result from breakdown of organic substances such as; plant roots, fungal or microbial by-products. The most common method of managing soil water repellency in urban areas is application of wetting agents most of which are surfactant based. A trial was conducted at Murdoch University to test the efficacy of three leading locally available commercial wetting agent products and their effect on three commercially available pre-mixed landscape soils. Results from capillary rise, WDPT and double ring infiltrometer tests suggest that; application of selected wetting agents not only did not result in enduring improvement in soil wettability, but also in some cases appear to enhance soil water repellency. These observations lead to the hypothesis that; surfactant molecules in the wetting agents bond to soil particles in the same way as organic hydrophobic materials that coat the soil grains. To substantiate the results, further investigation required to understand the mechanism by which wetting agent molecules interact with soil particles
Appropriate technology selection tool for decentralised wastewater treatment systems
A transition toward decentralised treatment of wastewater is currently occurring in Australia and globally, giving the opportunity for a more sustainable water cycle. Appropriate selection of decentralised treatment systems is complicated due to the number of technologies available, wide variance in capabilities of different technologies and lack of expertise of decision makers. A number of decision support tools have been developed to assist in determining appropriate technology for given situations. Previously, tools have focused on regulatory factors, however there is room for further development related to maintenance requirements, nutrient management and energy efficiency. This paper presents a recent development at the Environmental Technology Centre, Murdoch University of an electronic decision support tool for appropriate decentralised wastewater selection, focusing on the nutrient management and energy efficiency of different treatment and technologies. The tool can be applied to a large number of wastewater situations beyond the urban, including national parks, remote townships, mining camps, peri-urban areas and aboriginal communities
Improving the energy efficient of manufactured lightweight housing: Integrating phase-change material with passive solar design
Improving the energy efficiency of the built environment is fundamental to slowing the current increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases and hence global warming. Thermal energy storage in buildings is a key component of energy conservation and the use of phase change materials is now regarded as one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways of achieving this. Space conditioning systems using integrated phase-change materials exhibit significantly higher thermal capacities than conventional systems and are therefore able to reduce and normalize extremes of high and low temperatures within the home. Various techniques have been used over time and this thesis describes the results of spring and summer trials using microencapsulated phase-change material plasterboard to improve thermal performance in lightweight buildings.
The author assisted in the design, supervision of construction, commissioning and thermal performance monitoring of a prototype lightweight manufactured park home in the warm temperate climate of Mandurah, 65 kms south of Perth, Western Australia. The microencapsulated phasechange material plasterboard was used as an integrated active and passive space heating and cooling system within the prototype. The summer trials involved the combination of using the plasterboard together with a fan assisted ventilation system; the spring trials described the use of the plasterboard together with a natural gas fire as a sensible heat source. Under cool conditions the fan
ventilation system was also used to heat the building.
This prototype indicates that innovative use of the new technology is a cost-effective way to improve the thermal performance and energy efficiency of housing under both summer and winter conditions. The thesis reports on the findings that have emerged from various planning, design, construction and preliminary monitoring activities. The project has verified that the costs of adding phase-change
materials are viable when integrated in volume manufactured lightweight housing with the added benefits of ignificantly reduced heating cooling costs and reduced greenhouse emissions. In fact, the benefits at this early stage have proven significant enough for the village development company to incorporate the new plasterboard within the design specification of all 415 homes in their next lifestyle village currently under construction

Advanced Metering Infrastructure(AMI): Appropriate areas for application in WA.
As a requirement of the Murdoch University Environmental Engineering Degree, Brenten Wellington undertook enrolment in ENG450 Engineering Internship. The internship took place at ENV Australia, a firm of environmental management consultants, which is located on Murray Street in Perth, Western Australia. Throughout the internship work was completed under the supervision of the industry supervisor, Principal Consultant Jim Singleton, and academic supervisor Dr Martin Anda who also worked at ENV Australia as a Principal Engineer, Sustainability.
The main focus of this internship as set out in the work placement agreement is as follows;
• Gain exposure to a range of experiences that conform to elements of competency;
• Acquire an ability to assimilate theoretical knowledge gained at Murdoch with practical considerations evidenced in a work environment;
• Gain an appreciation of work practices, techniques and culture relevant to a specific discipline;
• Develop enhanced ability to think clearly, critically and creatively when solving problems, by fusing experience, reason and training into considered judgment through job specific problem solving;
• Develop enhanced ability to communicate outcomes and deliver presentations in the workplace context;
• Acquire and/or develop a capacity for and an understanding of teamwork in a workplace context; and
• Complete agreed reporting activities to document and describe these workplace activities for assessment within the School in which the Student is studying.
At ENV Australia a number of projects were worked on in the areas of water management, sustainability and environmental management. Due to the broad nature of projects that were worked on throughout the internship, a focus was taken on Smart Metering and Advanced Metering Infrastructure. It was this focus in which the following report was developed. “Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI): Appropriate areas for application in WA”.
Electrical and water utilities in Australia and around the globe begun to look at smart meters (SM) as a technology that would allow them to better manage the resources at hand. While this was occurring there were a number of issues that were raised;
• Customers were becoming concerned about climate change and the environment,
• Industries were unprepared with a major new problem of resource efficiency,
• Resource prices begun to significantly rise for customers and the industries were incapable of adapting to these changes in society and in the market.
In Australia SM rollouts begun to occur in the energy sector with this technology capable of numerous benefits including resource efficiency.
By the time a number of SM programmes and projects began to rollout there was an understanding with many experts that the challenges at hand would require a much more sophisticated resource management system. Smart grids were the answer to this.
Although this was now known, the rather rapid changes that have occurred left utilities at a stand-‐ still, with a number of issues beginning to rise once again;
• Climate change policies put a higher price on the largest polluters, with smart technologies able to assist with this,
• Under-‐investment into infrastructure has meant improved maintenance and management is not possible,
• Renewable energy initiatives such as Photovoltaics (PV) and Electric vehicles (EV) required much more sophisticated infrastructure
• Customers required smart infrastructure to help them better manage their water and electricity use
It became obvious that a complete transformation of the resource industry was now required. Though these changes are well beyond the capabilities of these industries alone, it will require a broad collaboration of sectors and a number of issues to be addressed at a State, Federal, Organisation and Industry level.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) will be a major focus point in developing a smart grid not only in Western Australia, but globally, and provide the integration of the various sectors and projects in order to complete this transformation

Ecuador's "good living" ::crises, discourse and law /
"Ecuador's "Good Living": Crises, Discourse, and Law by Gallegos Anda, presents a critical approach towards the concept of Buen Vivir that was included in Ecuador's 2008 Constitution. Due to its apparent legal novelty, this normative formula received much praise from multiple civil society and academic circles by forging what some argued to be a new development paradigm based on Andean epistemologies. Gallegos Anda theorizes this important phenomenon through an inductive analysis of context and power relations. Through a masterful navigation, through epistemological fields, the author offers a critical theory of Buen Vivir that focuses on changing citizenship regimes, a retreating state, politicised ethnic cleavages, discursive democracy and the emergence of an empty signifier. Gallegos-Anda is the first to situate Buen Vivir in a theoretical context grounded in international human rights law"-
