Tree-ring stable isotopes show different ecophysiological strategies in native and invasive woody species of a semiarid riparian ecosystem in the Great Plains of the United States

    No full text
Persistent shifts in riparian vegetation associated with the invasion of introduced Elaeagnus angustifolia and native nonriparian Juniperus virginiana have been reported in the U.S. Great Plains, with significant impacts on ecosystem services. In Nebraska, these species have been expanding into the native Populus deltoides riparian forests along the Republican River. Using dendrochronological data and stable isotope ratios, we examined the annual growth and acclimation strategies of these three species to climatic and streamflow variability. We hypothesized that the ability of invasive species to grow under a wide range of environmental conditions favour vegetation shifts at the expense of native species. Streamflow was the strongest predictor for performance. When accompanied with above-average annual precipitation, streamflow resulted in peak tree-ring widths in P. deltoides. J. virginiana showed less sensitivity, and E. angustifolia showed no response. delta O-18 values did not differ among species, which indicates that all species compete for the same water source. delta C-13 ratios and WUEi were higher in J. virginiana than in P. deltoides and E. angustifolia and increased in all species over time. E. angustifolia and P. deltoides exhibit a strong stomatal control and response to relative humidity relative to J. virginiana, which showed anisohydric stomatal behaviour. Our results show that once established, J. virginiana and E. angustifolia thrive in the understory of P. deltoides using different adaptive and acclimation strategies. Based on current water flow management, which prevents high-flood pulses through the riparian zone, these species will continue to establish and spread throughout the Republican River watershed

A dynamic econometric-simulation model of the U.S. livestock industry

    No full text
Agricultural policy makers have shown an increased inclination to utilize large-scale computerized models to help evaluate alternative policy proposals. Recent advances in computer technology make it possible for agricultural economists to provide policy makers with detailed multicommodity models which are microcomputer based. These models offer high portability and rapid access to information and at the same time provide analysis of the direct and indirect economic impacts of policies as well as the resulting distributional and welfare impacts. This study presents such a model for the U.S. livestock industry. Behavioral supply relationships were econometrically estimated to explain the primary production emanating from beef, dairy, hog, broiler, turkey, egg and sheep subsectors and the resulting supply of fed beef, nonfed beef, pork, broilers, turkey, eggs, milk, veal and lamb. Farm-level demand equations were also estimated and incorporated, along with the supply relationships, into a simulation model that solves for annual prices, production and inventories in each livestock subsector.Supply response functions for each livestock production enterprise are driven by expected returns. The supply specification provides a direct link between micro-level decision environments and the resulting aggregate supply response. Direct linkage between livestock and crop sectors is achieved by endogenously calculated feed cost for each livestock enterprise. The simulation model allows users to exogenously specify livestock production cost parameters, policy variables such as milk and wool support price, import and export levels and feed prices which characterize alternatives policy. Comparing simulations with and without these exogenous changes provides quantitative estimates of aggregate direct and indirect market impacts and provides the basis for quantitative estimates of the distributional and welfare impacts of the policy.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:57:03Z (GMT). A teleprocessing system using the touchtone telephone as the primary input/output terminal

    No full text
This paper describes a teleprocessing system (a system which processes messages transmitted and received over existing telephone communication channels), both hardware and software, which uses the 12 key touchtone telephone as the primary input/output terminal. The hardware elements are first examined collectively as a teleprocessing hardware system. Then, each of the individual hardware elements is examined and any special conditions affecting the software are explained. The software is discussed by dividing it into two functional parts, the operating system and the application for the touchtone terminal. The application selected for the touchtone telephone is that of providing the user with a non-printing desk calculator. Finally, an examination is made of this software from three points of view, the author of this paper, other similar systems, and the user at the touchtone telephone.Computer Science, Department o

Teacher perceptions of principals' leadership influence on ninth grade student outcomes, 2008

    No full text
The accountability and standards movements in education have intensified pressure on school administrators to raise the achievement levels of their students. The purpose of this inquiry was to explain the connections among key organizational variables and student achievement. One of the difficulties in predicting student achievement is that the socioeconomic status generally overwhelms all other organizational variables in explaining the variance. Thus, it is important to find school properties that can explain student achievement controlling for socioeconomic status. The intention of this study is to determine if a relationship exists between the leadership practices of school principals and ninth grade student achievement as measured by GPA and the EOCT examination as assessed by teacher perceptions by an instrument created by the researcher. The leadership practices of principals were measured using an instrument survey that is divided into three sections: School Administration, Student Assessment, and School Climate. There was an attempt to control any bias in perceptions 1 by determining if selected demographic variables of the schools (enrollment size, race, gender, students free lunch status, and class size ratio) are significantly related to teachers perceptions of the principal leadership. Student achievement was determined using the grade point averages and EOCT scores for ninth graders for the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school years. It is expected that the results of this study will be of interest to administrators of schools and other schools who serve students from lower socioeconomic groups in rural areas with urban characteristics. If variation in principal leadership is influenced by the characteristics of teachers and students, the findings may be of interest to supervisors of principals who might have to show more empathy when conducting clinical supervision with principals, while increasing principal knowledge base for facilitating teachers in coping with such conditions
