Web 2.0: Hypertext by Any Other Name?
Web 2.0 is the popular name of a new generation of Web applications, sites and companies that emphasis openness, community and interaction. Examples include technologies such as Blogs and Wikis, and sites such as Flickr. In this paper we compare these next generation tools to the aspirations of the early Hypertext pioneers to see if their aims have finally been realized

Adapting musicology's use of affect theories to contemporary theatre making: Directing Martin Crimp's attempts on her life
Copyright @ Intellect 2011Adopting and adapting musicology's use of affect theories, specifically Jeremy Gilbert's idea of an 'affective analysis' and David Epstein's idea of 'shaping affect', this article looks at Martin Crimp's Attempts on Her Life from a practitioner's perspective. It investigates the challenges and benefits of adopting an 'affective approach' to directing recent theatre texts that stress the musicality and corporeality of language along with, and at times above, its signifying roles. Rather than locating Aristotelian dramatic climaxes based on narratological or characterological progression, an affective approach seeks to identify moments of affective intensity, which produce a different sort of impact by working on a 'body-first' methodology, rather than the directly cerebral. That this embodied impact is not ultimately meaningless is one of affect theory's most vital assertions. This approach has resonance in terms of how directors, performers and critics/theorists approach work of this type

Chimpanzees and human evolution/ edited by Martin N. Muller, Richard W. Wrangham, and David R. Pilbeam.
Includes bibliographical references and index.Although chimpanzees and other primates are frequently used as models to reconstruct the behavior of extinct human ancestors, this is rarely done in a consistent or methodologically rigorous fashion. This volume brings together leading scholars to explore how knowledge about chimpanzees can be used to understand both what is unique about our own species, and how these traits evolved. The first part of the book makes the case that the last common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans was chimpanzee-like. This inference is based not on an assumption that chimpanzees are a model species, but on morphological, developmental, and genetic data, together with evidence from the hominin fossil record. The second part of the book provides the first detailed record of the similarities and differences between humans and chimpanzees, including those in social system, mating system, diet, social behavior, hunting, tool use, culture, cognition, and communication.--Martin N. Dobývání znalostí z dat pomocí kopulí
Název práce: Dobývání znalostí z dat pomocí kopulí Autor: Martin Ščavnický Katedra: Katedra teoretické informatiky a matematické logiky Vedoucí diplomové práce: RNDr. Ing. V práci také navrhujeme a testujeme modifikovanou metodu pro modelování dat pomocí hierarchických Archimedovských kopulí, která je schopna lépe popsat některá data...Title: A study of applying copulas in data mining Author: Martin Ščavnický Department: Department of Theoretical Computer Science and Mathe- matical Logic Supervisor: RNDr. Ing. Martin Holeňa CSc., Department of Theoretical Computer Science and Mathematical Logic Abstract: Copulas are functions that describe the relationship between a multivariate distribution function and its marginals. They provide a way to model multivariate distribution functions, and are extensively used in finance and studied in data mining. In practice, there are many different copula families and no standard way for choosing the right one. In our work, we compare suitability of different copula families in data mining. We fit classification data using 8 copula families and compare them using 3 mea- sures of fit. We also use a classification algorithm based on copulas and compare its accuracy for different copula families. The results indicate that elliptical copulas fit our data better, but hierarchical Archimedean copulas give comparable accuracy in the classification. We also propose and test a modified method for modelling data using hierarchical Archimedean copu- las, which fits some datasets with negative dependence between attributes better. Based on this modified method, we propose a visualization of depen- dence in data and observe...Department of Theoretical Computer Science and Mathematical LogicKatedra teoretické informatiky a matematické logikyFaculty of Mathematics and PhysicsMatematicko-fyzikální fakult
Konflikty v mezinarodních v týmech
Cílem této diplomové práce je definovat mezinárodní tým a konflikty a určit základní kompetence pro manažera a zaměstnance mezinárodních týmů. Členové mezinárodních týmů by měli mít více dovedností a kompetencí, než ti, kteří patří k homogenním týmům. This thesis aims to define international team and conflicts and identify the essential competencies for a manager and employee of international teams. It is argued that everyone in an international team should possess more skills and competencies than those who belong to homogeneous teams. As a result, representatives of international team must be able to understand culturally diverse backgrounds manage conflicts constructively, and comprehend different strategies to handle sensitive cases. The research begins by reviewing literature on culture, cultural dimensions in the team and conflict. A survey was performed on 167 individuals from various cultural backgrounds to analyze their attitudes towards multicultural teams and their managers. Some findings are in accordance with theories and some show different interesting opinions experienced pragmatically by the respondents. Eventually, the author based on the results obtained from the empirical research and the theoretical literatures has created a recommendation
Ospravedlňuje Brownův čin a...This BA thesis is concerned with Henry David Thoreau's opinions on slavery. The first part of the thesis focuses on the development of the abolitionist movement in the first half of the nineteenth century and of antislavery tendencies and organizations. The most important figures of the abolitionist movement, such as Benjamin Lundy, William Lloyd Garrison, Theodore Dwight Weld, David Walker or Frederick Douglass, as well as the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and the 1865 adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, are paid attention to. Thoreau's essays Civil Disobedience, Slavery in Massachusetts and A Plea for Captain John Brown are analyzed in the thesis. In his Civil Disobedience, the author criticizes the government for abusing, rather than protecting, American citizens, who have elected it and enabled its functioning. Thoreau scorns the government for supporting slavery and for waging the Mexican-American War. He believes that every man has an inalienable right to be free and since the government takes this right away from people, he responds to it with civil disobedience. One comes across Thoreau's critique of his fellow citizens and of their lack of interest in enslaved people in his Slavery in Massachusetts. The writer is disappointed with the fact that law,...Department of Anglophone Literatures and CulturesÚstav anglofonních literatur a kulturFaculty of ArtsFilozofická fakult
Cult: A Composite Novel
Cult (redacted)
The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence.
Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults.
The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic.
Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form
The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts
