Marsh was Pacific University's first librarian and the brother of its first president. He functioned as interim president between others serving. While the letter does not specify, 'Adkins' may actually be George H. Atkinson, the secretary of Pacific University's Board of Trustees, who represented Pacific's interests for the federal government

    A portrait of Joseph Walker Marsh, probably from between 1900-1908. Marsh was hired as the Professor of Ancient Languages at Pacific University in 1867. He would serve as the interim president for the university during transition periods. He was the half-brother of Pacific University's first President, Sidney Harper Marsh. This portrait appears in a scrapbook album compiled by Frances B. Clapp, a 1908 Pacific University graduate
