Nicolò Rezzara e le battaglie scolastiche dei cattolici italiani tra Otto e Novecento
During the first fifteen years of the XX Century the Italian scholastic debate was animated by two main questions: the control of the state over primary school and the teaching of religion in public schools. Among the various protagonists of those debates, Nicolò Rezzara represented one of the most relevant figures of the Catholic front: author of various books on the school and its legislation, his contribution well represents the evolution of Catholic positions on these issues, hovering between the request of a religiously oriented public school and the opposition to the monopoly regime imposed after the Italian unification. The article aims to highlight the work of this author, which still lacks an in-depth study
La pedagogia di Félix Dupanloup in Italia
Felix Dupanloup (1802-1878), Savoyard priest and afterwards bishop of Orleans, was one of the most important figures of Catholicism in France and Europe during the second half of the Nineteenth century. Author of numerous pedagogic essays, he promoted a new catechetical method, defended the teaching of pagan classics in the school, and fought the battle for the freedom of education. He is also known for the promotion of women's education, so that has been considered one of the most prominent catholic emancipationist. Dupanloup's thought spread throughout Europe, with numerous translations of his essays. He had a considerable influence in Italy as well, where he brought new perspectives in the pedagogical and school debate. The article focuses on the meaning and features of this influence
La «Rivista di Filosofia Neo-Scolastica» e la pedagogia (1909-1923)
The Neo-scholastic school had great influence on the Italian pedagogical history of the twentieth century. This trend was affirmed by the second half of the twenties, but began to develop before through the group of scholars gathered around the prestigious journal «Rivista di Filosofia Neo-Scolastica», founded in 1909 by Father Agostino Gemelli and Giulio Canella. This article aims to investigate the pedagogical interest of the journal by analyzing the issues published from 1909 until 1923. The paper explores the following aspects of the journal: topics on which the journal drew the attention, links with other catholic circles, and the interpretation provided for other coeval schools of thought
Educazione e scuola nell'opera di Geremia Bonomelli
Geremia Bonomelli (1831-1914), bishop of Cremona for more than forty years, was one of the most important figures of Italian Catholicism of his time. His life, pastoral work and books have been widely studied, while his pedagogical and scholastic interests remain largely unpublished. Despite the historiography gap, he committed to education of young people, promoted a new catechetical method, took care of the situation of the Italian school and its legislation. Differently from other Catholics, Bonomelli defended the fundamental role of the State in the government and management of the school, proposing an alliance between national and religious education. The article aims to highlight Bonomelli’s pedagogical and school views, which appear particularly important in the Italian Cristian pedagogy
Cattolici, scuola dello Stato e libertà di insegnamento tra fine Ottocento ed età giolittiana
Between the second half of the XIX century and the early years of XX, the position of Catholics regarding the government influence in the education field underwent a profound evolution. Once the hard conflict with the order following the national unification was overcome, the initiatives of the Catholic movement were increasingly directed towards a more collaborative parliamentary commitment. In these decades took place a profound transformation of Catholic scholastic theses, especially of one of the most significant and representative, the battle for freedom of teaching. This essay shed a light on the causes of this transformation, using some authors and debates that determined these changes
"Il progresso dell'istruzione ha bisogno di libertà". I cattolici e la questione scolastica in Italia tra Otto e Novecento
Giuseppe Allievo e la libertà d'insegnamento
The fight for literacy in Italy progressed from the Nineteenth century through politics of centralization and State control in the education system. If, on the one hand, the State monopoly of education favoured the nationalization of the masses, linguistic homogenization and the cultural unification of a still politically divided country with high illiteracy rates, on the other hand, the outcome was that teaching was standardized, competition among educational institutions was discouraged and the freedom of families in choosing education for their children was compromised. As a consequence, in the pedagogical debate, freedom of education, of which Giuseppe Allievo, professor of education at the University of Turin between 1867 and 1912 was one of the main supporters, emerged as a central theme. The article aims to illustrate, within Allievo's pedagogical systematic reflection, his views on educational freedom and his criticism of the Italian school system and teaching
