Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2021.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the assumption that texts have identity-forming roles, this study attempted to answer the question: Why does the author of the Gospel of Matthew include non-Judean characters in his narrative? To explore a possible answer to this question, I coined and used the socio-narrative reading method, which merges socio-scientific criticism, narrative criticism, and semiological reading through social identity, characterisation, and semiotic theories as a heuristic interpretive tool. I contend that the implied author of Matthew used the non-Judean characters to form the identity of the ideal readers’ community. This community is not a specific, isolated community, but an imagined 1st-century group of people, i.e., an ideal readers’ community, who could read, grasp, and accept the ideology1 propagated by the Gospel of Matthew as it was expressed by the implied author in the narrative. Many Matthean scholars have pointed to the role of the non-Judean characters in the Matthean narrative as having implications for the mission to the non-Judeans, but without providing a theoretical basis. I argue that Ronald Barthes’ semiological reading method, specifically the second order meaning of stories, fills this lacuna in Matthean scholarship. Furthermore, most of the studies on the non-Judean characters in the Gospel of Matthew considered them as a reflection of the addressed community. However, I contend that these characters have an identity forming role. I argue that, on the one hand, the implied author used the negatively stereotyped non-Judeans in the Matthean Jesus’ teaching (i.e. Matt. 5:47; 6:7; 6:32; 18:17; and 20:19), which are exemplified in the stories of the negatively characterised non-Judean individuals such as the Gadarenes (Matt. 8:32-34), Pilate (Matt. 27:1-6; 27:62-66), and the Roman soldiers (Matt. 27: 27-28:15), to demonstrate the “otherness”, the “outsiderness” of the non-Judeans. On the other hand, the positively characterised non-Judeans in the genealogy account (Matt. 1:1-17), the Magi (Matt. 2:1-12), the centurion (Matt. 8:5-13), and the Canaanite woman (Matt. 15: 21-28) are used in the Matthean narrative to form the identity of 1 In this disseretation ideology has the meaning of what the implied author wants to promote, shuch as in the first century context in which the idea of non-Judeans being a part of God’s people and rightful beneficries of the kingdom blessings was contested, the implied author promote the possibility of the non-Judeans being a part of such people. the ideal readers’ community. If the positively characterised non-Judeans were shown to be rightful beneficiaries of the messianic blessings, the social boundary that excluded non-Judeans, who were perceived as others and outsiders in relation to God’s people, is either compromised or demolished. Doctora

    No full text
This text seeks to respond to an interdisciplinary research problem that touches the areas of Information Technology and Administrative and Civil Law and, for that, explores the interactions between the complexity brought by technological evolution in the processing of personal data, under the custody of entities State-owned companies, and the legal framework dealing with Civil Liability, in particular State Liability, to respond to the problem of identifying what would be the nature of such liability, whether subjective or objective, in view of the leakage of personal data under the custody of the State entity. The methodological path to achieve this objective was the bibliographical review, using the hypothetical-deductive reasoning, under the legal-dogmatic perspective complemented by the legal-philosophical one. The author sought to bring to the debate the knowledge he has in the area of Information Technology, his first academic training, in order to enrich the discussion, adding contributions drawn from philosophy about concepts such as privacy and responsibility. Intertextuality – encyclopedia and archaeology: Matthew’s presentation of Jesus as saviour This article aims to explore and to apply what Gérard Genette refers to as kinds of transtextual relationships and what Ulrich Luz, in his application of these insights to the Gospel of Matthew, calls the encyclopaedia of the author or the original readers. The former enterprise entails exploring intertextuality at the synchronic level and the latter examines intertextuality at the diachronic level. The first pertains to Matthew’s pretexts. The second enterprise entails an engagement with pragmatical aspects such as the context of the intended readers and the sedimentation of prior texts designated by the notion intertextuality. In this article the pragmatical aspects concern a discussion of the manner in which the first readers could be addressed by the pretexts of the use of the word sōzō (‘to save’). It consists of three parts. The first represents a concise reflection on criteria and methods relevant to an investigation of intertextuality. The second exemplifies the ‘ encyclopedia’ of Matthew’s intertextuality, that is ‘intertext’, ‘paratext’, ‘hypertext’, ‘hypotext’, ‘architext’, and ‘metatext’. The third part discusses the pretexts of the various occurrences of the word sōzō in Matthew

The author of Matthew offers a well constructed parable based on social realities that existed in first-century agricultural Palestine that also reflected Hellenistic-Roman practices. These practices are explained in detail as far as they are related to the parable. Basing the arguments on accepted theories of parable interpretation it is illustrated how a definite but surprising picture of God is presented. The context was most probably Jews who was pondering about the absence of God in the realities of this world. However, Jesus provides an answer, showing the active presence of God even among the poor. The unmeasured grace of God is shown to everybody – nobody should feel jealous about that, but should rejoice.

For the early Jesus movement Jesus' messianic identity was of great importance. This description of Jesus as the Messiah is something that permeates the whole Gospel of Matthew. In Mt 8-9, Matthew has a massive depiction of Jesus' immense power through the stories of nine miracles. It is the portrayal of this miracle-working Messiah I examine in this essay. It is generally accepted that a Messiah who would cast out demons and heal people from diseases was not expected. At the same time the Gospel of Matthew testifies of being written by a Jewish author in a Jewish context. So, what role do the miracles play in Matthew’s description of Jesus as the Messiah? In what way was Matthew's presentation of Jesus as the miracle-working Messiah relevant in his Jewish context? And how is the prophecy which is quoted in Matthew 8:17 used to confirm Jesus' healing ministry? In my investigation I have found that a general expectation of healing in the eschatological kingdom of God may have constituted a factor of recognition in Matthew's description. Moreover, there were some expectations of miracles in the tradition associated with an eschatological prophet and it is even possible to find indications of miracles in texts about the Davidic shepherd king, inspired by Ez 34. To this, Matthew inserts evidence from Scripture and by a skillful interpretation process he delineates Jesus as a miracle-working Messiah. My conclusion is that the tradition and understanding of Scripture was enough for Matthew to present a miracle-working Messiah who was rationally supported and relevant in his Jewish context

Undrained shear behavior of mixed mine waste rock and tailings

2017 Spring.Includes bibliographical references. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of variability in mixture ratio (R) and tailings composition on shear behavior and shear strength of mixed mine waste rock and tailings (WR&T). Crushed gravel was used as a synthetic waste rock (SWR), and mixtures of sand, silt, and clay were used to create two synthetic mine tailings: average synthetic tailings (AST) and fine synthetic tailings (FST). Mixtures of WR&T were prepared with varying R to represent coarse-dominated structures to fine-dominated structures, as well as R = Ropt, which represents an optimal mixture ratio where tailings "just fill" void space of the waste rock. Pure SWR, pure tailings, and WR&T mixtures containing AST and FST were tested in consolidated-undrained triaxial compression at target effective confining stresses (σʹc) of 10, 50, and 100 kPa. The SWR and WR&T triaxial specimens were 150 mm in diameter by 300 mm tall, whereas the AST and FST specimens were 38 mm in diameter by 76 mm tall. Dilative, strain-hardening behavior was observed for all triaxial tests on pure SWR, whereas contractive, strain-softening behavior was observed for all triaxial tests on pure FST. Triaxial tests on pure AST exhibited both dilative, strain-hardening behavior and contractive, strain-softening behavior; contractive behavior was observed for AST specimens that contained larger initial void ratios (e) after consolidation. Waste rock and tailings mixtures that had coarse- dominated structures exhibited comparable undrained shear behavior to pure SWR. Fine- dominated WR&T mixtures exhibited undrained shear behavior that was more similar to the pure tailings; however, the addition of waste rock to tailings was observed to mitigate some contractive behavior as the addition of waste rock to tailings increased the tendency of the WR&T mixtures to exhibit dilative response. Mixtures prepared to target Ropt exhibited dilative, strain-hardening behavior. An analysis of flow behavior indicated that the addition of waste rock to tailings to create WR&T mixtures improved flow behavior of pure tailings to a limited- or no- flow behavior that improves resistance against static liquefaction. Shear strength parameters for all materials were calculated based on stress paths in p'-q space reaching the failure line (Kf Line). Pure materials yielded effective tangent friction angle (φ't) of 38° for AST, 39° for FST, and 41° for SWR. The AST mixture with R ≈ Ropt yielded φ't = 48°, which was the largest φ't of all mixtures. Fine-dominated structures of AST (i.e., R < Ropt) yielded φ't = 44°. This increase in φ't relative to the pure AST was attributed to the additional frictional resistance between the silty-sand AST and the SWR. The FST WR&T mixtures were only fine-dominated structures as all specimens yielded R < Ropt. The effective stress friction angle increased from 32° for FST mixtures prepared at R = 1.7 to 38° for R = 2.5. The lower φ't for the FST mixtures relative to the pure FST was attributed to looser tailings (i.e., higher void ratio) compared to the pure tailings specimens. A steady-state analysis was performed with the assistance of mixture theory to determine if a single steady state line (SSL) could be relevant for WR&T mixtures that was independent of mixture ratio. Results showed that the use of equivalent void ratios for the steady-state analysis of mixtures provide a reasonable prediction of undrained shear behavior of mixtures. The analysis on AST mixtures demonstrates the effectiveness of equivalent void ratios both for fine- and coarse-dominated structures. The FST mixtures also supports the effectiveness of fine-dominated equivalent void ratios for assessing undrained shear behavior of mixtures. The steady state analysis supports the use of a single SSL for mixtures based on pure tailings and the use of equivalent void ratios that are both independent of R
