    Report on Meteorological Research March 1, 1935 (m-1)

    No full text
    The object of the report was to elucidate in detail the various features of the research program in meteorology being carried on at the Daniel Guggenheim Airship Institute in Akron, Ohio. Mr. L. J. Fangman, of the U.S. Weather Bureau, was collaborating with the author in carrying out work such as a study of autographic records of the various meteorological elements during frontal passages with a view to the possible prediction of the intensity of the accompanying disturbance as it may affect the operation of aircraft and a study of atmospheric gustiness with a view to finding the dependence between frequency end amplitude of velocity fluctuations and the vertical temperature and velocity gradients

    Hypermaps: constructions and operations

    It is conjectured that given positive integers l, m, n with l-1 + m-1 + n-1 < 1and an integer g ≥ 0, the triangle group Δ = Δ (l, m, n) = ⟨X,Y,Z|X l = Y m =Z n = X Y Z = 1⟩ contains infinitely many subgroups of finite index and of genusg. This conjecture can be rewritten in another form: given positive integers l,m, n with l¡1 +m¡1 +n¡1 < 1 and an integer g ≥ 0, there are infinitely manynonisomorphic compact orientable hypermaps of type (l, m, n) and genus g.We prove that the conjecture is true, when two of the parameters l, m, n areequal, by showing how to construct those hypermaps, and we extend the resultto nonorientable hypermaps.A classification of all operations of finite order in oriented hypermaps isgiven, and a detailed study of one of these operations (the duality operation)is developed. Adapting the notion of chirality group, the duality group ofH can be defined as the minimal subgroup D(H) ≤¦ M on (H) such thatH = D (H) is a self-dual hypermap. We prove that for any positive integer d,we can find a hypermap of that duality index (the order of D (H) ), even whensome restrictions apply, and also that, for any positive integer k, we can find anon self-dual hypermap such that |Mon (H) | = d = k. We call this k the dualitycoindex of the hypermap. Links between duality index, type and genus of aorientably regular hypermap are explored.Finally, we generalize the duality operation for nonorientable regular hypermaps and we verify if the results about duality index, obtained for orientably regular hypermaps, are still valid

    A Proposal for a Typological Reading of Daniel 11

    This work is embargoed by the author until 5/31/2024.This dissertation argues that Daniel 11 is a typological prophecy and, thus, it should be read typologically. While agreeing that Daniel 11:36–45 does not fit the life of Antiochus IV in a strictly literal way, contra the scholarly consensus, this dissertation argues that Daniel 11:21–35 is not strictly literally true of Antiochus IV either. Discrepancies between the prophecy and historical accounts about Antiochus IV exist in both Daniel 11:36–45 and 11:21–35. However, the discrepancies between Daniel 11 and the historical accounts do not necessarily prove that Daniel gets history wrong. Rather, they are common characteristics of biblical typology. In Daniel 11, they signify that Antiochus IV typifies those who come after him (and also includes those who come before him). The study also shows that discrepancies between the prophecy/promise and the initial fulfillment is a feature of prophetical typology. The discrepancies do not negate the initial fulfillment, which is confirmed by Scripture; rather, they point to future fulfillment(s), which will also be affirmed by later biblical texts. The multiple fulfillments do not fulfill the type at the same level, but they all fulfill the same type that is promised/prophesied. Chapter 1 reviews the scholarly interpretation of Daniel 11 and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of each interpretation. Chapter 2 briefly surveys the history from Cyrus the Great to Antiochus IV. Chapter 3 studies two OT passages (2 Sam 7:1216; Isa 7:14), concluding that both passages should be interpreted typologically, thus providing a model for a typological interpretation of Daniel 11. Chapters 4 and 5 are devoted to the interpretation of Daniel 11, beginning with verse-by-verse commentary. Chapter 4 allots a separate section to discuss the relationship between Daniel 11 and the so-called “Akkadian Prophecies.” While Daniel 11 bears stylistic similarities with the “Akkadian Prophecies,” it differs from these Akkadian texts in other ways. After the verse-by-verse study of Daniel 11, chapter 5 then compares Daniel 11 and the OT passages (2 Sam 7:12–16; Isa 7:14) and proposes a typological reading of Daniel 11. Chapter 6 summarizes the dissertation and provides implications of the study, which concludes with a proposal for a tentative definition of typological prophecy/promise

    Brand gender and cross-gender extensions.

    Afin de se développer et de générer des profits, la plupart des marques de luxe utilisent les stratégies d’extension de marque, c'est-à-dire qu’elles essaient de s’introduire dans de nouvelles catégories de produits. En complément, une nouvelle tendance émerge : il s’agit des extensions de segments de marché (par exemple un horlogers masculin visant les femmes). L'objectif de cet article est de discuter du concept du genre de la marque et de son influence potentielle sur les extensions de segments de marché (homme – femme). Plus spécifiquement, nous souhaitons décrire comment les marques féminines s’étendent sur le marché d'hommes et vice-versa. Une recherche qualitative, de type sémiotique structurale, est effectuée sur un échantillon de huit marques de luxe. Les techniques sémiotiques permettent de comprendre les significations profondes du discours des marques au travers de leur communication. Les résultats exploratoires soulignent l'importance de la cohérence entre le genre de la marque et le genre utilisé pour parler au segment de marché opposé. Ce constat fort qui ressort des analyses est en conformité avec la littérature sur les extensions de marque et l’importance de la congruence.In order to develop brands and increase growth, most luxury brands rely on extensions on different product categories. On top of that, the current trend is the cross-gender extensions (eg. Masculine watchmakers targeting female audience). The objective of this paper is to discuss the concept of brand gender and its potential influence in crossover extensions. More specifically, we intend to describe how female brands extend on the men market and vice versa. Using semiotic analysis, a qualitative research is performed on a sample of eight brands. The semiotic techniques allow to understand the deep meanings of their products, communication, web sites and narratives. The exploratory findings highlight the importance of brand consistency in terms of values while addressing both male and female segments. These findings, specific to luxury brands, provide support to the brand extension literature.Luxe; Masculinité; Brand gender; Genre de la marque; Cross-gender extensions; Extensions de segments de marché; Masculinity; Femininity; Luxury; Féminité;

    Coating and filler materials for localized thermal processing of glazed ceramics and other brittle and low thermal conductivity materials. The coating materials include oxide compositions that exhibit coefficients of thermal expansion which are less than about 8×10-6 /° C. and glass transition temperatures which are less than about 400° C. The filler materials include particulate oxide materials which do not substantially react during localized thermal processing of glazed ceramics and other brittle and low thermal conductivity materials. The coating and filler materials are useable together as a composite material for repairing cavities having depths greater than about 2 mm

    Ethnic identity, political identity and ethnic conflict: simulating the effect of congruence between the two identities on ethnic violence and conflict

    Get PDF
    This thesis outlines and presents an alternative hypothetical process to the emergence of ethnic conflict. Ethnic conflicts, rather than being dependent upon pre-existing 'ancient hatreds', are instead the result of a congruence between ethnic and political identity which grants individuals the ability to use ethnicity to identify and eliminate political threats. This hypothesis is formed by the examination of three case studies of ethnic conflict: Lebanon, Northern Ireland and Croatia. This hypothesis is then formalised and tested using an agent based simulation in which agent interactions are dependent upon ethnic and political identity and the congruence between the two. As predicted there was a strong positive correlation between how accurately ethnic identity reflected political identity and the level of ethnically motivated violence in the simulation, although the relationship was not linear. Furthermore the effect of a shift in congruence was found to be roughly comparable to the effect of initialising agents with a moderate level of pre-existing ethnic antagonism

    Why Should Central Banks Avoid the Use of the Underlying Inflation Indicator?

    Get PDF
    This paper assesses the usefulness of the commonly used underlying inflation indicator, in light of the criteria proposed in Marques et al. (2000). Empirical evidence for a group of six countries strongly suggets that the use of underlying inflation as an indicator of trend inflation should be avoided.
