Complexity beyond pure reason? Emergence through the lens of coincidence
No full textIn this talk I will introduce Transcendental Information Cascades, a method to understand the temporal dynamics of naturally occurring complex systems. The distinctive feature of the approach is that it relies on a specific kind of spatio-temporal network that represents information token recurrence and coincidence. Transcendental Information Cascades make formerly hidden dimensions of sequential data accessible and throw up novel questions about chaos and randomness. I will present various applications of the method in different domains such as the analysis of digital traces in online communities, English literature, and micro-linguistics.

From Dickens to Data Science - Making the Case for Transcendental Information Cascades
No full textIn this talk I introduce Transcendental Information Cascades, a method to understand the temporal dynamics of naturally occurring complex systems through the lens of a specific kind of spatio-temporal network that represents information token recurrence. The method suits very well for exploratory data analysis when it is unknown what is going on at the very low levels of a system's dynamics, and allows switching between looking at individual events or accumulated event sequences. I will present one application of this method in a digital humanities project where we analysed the entire corpus of Charles Dickens's novels and discuss the potential it has for other application areas such as the analysis of brain wave recordings, patent mining or the study of online communities for example.These are the slides of a talk at the RWTH Aachen University, Chair for Computational Social Sciences and Humanities (Germany, date of the talk 06-03-2018
Video Demonstration of an Interactive Visual Analytics Approach to Literature

The system leverages the Transcendental Cascades Approach to construct networks of character co-occurrence in novels and provides a variety of visualisations. The application area is literature studies as well as university education in the humanities.</p>

No full textCollaborative partners are important in international research collaboration. The research collaborations between four CANZUK countries (Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom) are examined to see whether their research connections are different from the research relationships with other countries. This paper measures the affinity index values and analyses the development of research collaborations among CANZUK countries with those between the CANZUK and other countries. The whole counting method and the fractional counting method are applied in this study to compare the differences in the results. The findings show that although the affinity index values of CANZUK countries were decreasing over time, the importance of CANZUK partners to CANZUK countries has likely increased over time at the expense of the other partners' importance. The study also shows the minor differences in results obtained by applying two different counting methods. These differences can be explained by the nature of the counting methods, and the choice to use either one of these two counting methods should be considered in other international research collaboration studies.</p
