A Green Approach for the Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts Acylation
The Friedel-Crafts acylation is one of the most utilised methods for C-C bond formation in aromatic chemistry.1 The development of an environmentally-benign and economically-feasible pathway of the Friedel-Crafts reaction is of great value and highly desired, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry wherein the acylation reaction is extensively employed.2 In this study, the intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylations of different aryl substituted carboxylic acids were investigated under environmentally-friendly heterogeneous solid catalysis3 in order to obtain the corresponding cyclic aromatic ketones, which are widely recognized as useful synthetic intermediates in various industrial fields, particularly drugs. Preliminary conditions and results will be presented
Oration in honour of his eminence Cardinal Mario Grech
Those of you who have known Bishop, now Cardinal, Mario Grech well,
will undoubtedly know him to be a person of strong words, a radical, and
someone who is attentive to detail. He distinguished himself for the fresh style
of leadership he brought to the Church during a time of renewal, as well as for
his promotion of civic life and justice in our islands. He left an impact with his
spiritual word as a leader, a word very often gentle but sometimes rather strong,
addressed to one and all - a word that hits its mark. He served Gozo as its Bishop
for almost fourteen years, between 2005 and 2019, and he adopted the motto
In Fractione Panis (In the Breaking of Bread). Within this context, he will be
remembered for his pastoral, exhortative and distinctive tone.peer-reviewe
Cannabis and psychosis : the Maltese contribution
Three different Maltese scientists have contributed to research on the link between cannabis and psychosis. The object of this article is to review and chronicle the work that has been done by these three colleagues in this field. Work has helped to establish whether cannabis causes psychosis, whether the continued use of cannabis by patients with schizophrenia affects the course of the disease and its treatment, and whether or not it is possible to change the habit of cannabis use in patients who have a psychotic disorder.peer-reviewe
The image of universities from the point of view of students and high school graudates
In this article the most important results and conclusions from two surveys are presented. The first one is an internal survey conducted among the students of the University of Wroclaw. The second one is a survey conducted among students of final grades of high schools located in Wroclaw. Both surveys were conducted in the years 2007-2009 on the territory of Wroclaw. Taking into consideration the purposes of this work, we will focus just on the most significant results and conclusions from the conducted surveys. Full set of data is available in a book discussing the results of a survey on self-presentation and the image of non-public higher education institutions (Grech 2010) and in an article discussing the methodology and detailed results of a survey of the image of University of Wroclaw (Grech 2011). The first of the presented surveys was carried out by a group of employees and students of the Institute of
Journalism and Social Communication of the University of Wroclaw, the author of this
article belonged to. The second survey was the effect of a greater own project.
Due to the lack of comparable surveys concerning Polish universities, the survey which is presented in a limited extent in this article is pioneering in character and before reference data for other universities are obtained, it gives a foundation for drawing conclusions about the image of universities in Poland. The obtained results highlight expectations, open and hidden factors determining the choice of a university, praised and negatively assessed elements of a university's image, ideas about other Polish universities, reconstruction of the image of perfect university. The analysis of the collected data shows a few dimensions through which a university is regarded and through which the decision whether to choose this or that university is made. These dimensions are systemic and hierarchical and - depending on the situation other criteria are regarded as important

John’s confessions of faith according to Prosper Grech
Confessions of faith in the New Testament are the Early Church’s reply to the apostolic kerygma, which centre was Jesus and His saving work. The John’s Tradition includes many texts, which in their literature structure and theological content unmistakably indicate the confession of faith. In the Fourth Gospel and John’s Epistels, Prosper Grech has distinguished thirty-two text groups, which can be called formulae of faith in strict sense. The author has classified the formulae according to the following criteria:
– verbs that introduce confessions,
– Christological titles,
– Jesus’ work,
– Sitz im Leben of formulae.
The Johannine Tradition does not include the formulae on Jesus’ Passion and Death which are so frequent in St. Paul and the Acts of the Apostles because the fourth evangelist represents the high Christology. His ideas are focusing on Incarnation, Revelation and Salvation with a universal dimension.
Presence of so many homologies in the Writings of John proves that in the Early Christian era the Christological ideas were developing. In the future, the formulae of faith will contribute to the Credo of the Church
Spontaneous resolution of atrial and ventricular septal defects in Malta
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the commonest congenital malformation, and ventricular septal defect (VSD) and atrial septal defect (ASD) are the commonest forms of CHD. This study was undertaken to determine rates or spontaneous closure or lesions diagnosed at echocardiography after detection or a murmur in Maltese patients born in 1990-94. A significant excess or ASD and VSD was found in Malta, and this was attributed to early echocardiographic diagnosis or small defects, prior to spontaneous closure. A high spontaneous closure rate was round for both ASD and VSD. Rate of closure for both defects was initially high, and tapered off at about 5 to 7 years or age for both lesions. ASDs in excess of 8 mm in diameter at presentation also underwent spontaneous resolution, which is contrary to the known natural history or these defects. Larger VSDs were shown to have a smaller likelihood or closing (p=0.04). Parents and patients can be reassured that spontaneous closure is very likely to occur in the vast majority of these conditions.peer-reviewe
The image of universities from the point of view of students and high school graduates
W artykule przedstawiono najważniejsze wyniki i wnioski wypływające z dwóch badań. Pierwsze z nich to badanie wewnętrzne przeprowadzone wśród studentów Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego, drugie to badanie przeprowadzone wśród wrocławskich maturzystów.
Otrzymane rezultaty wskazują na oczekiwania, jawne i ukryte determinanty wyboru uczelni, cenione i negatywnie oceniane elementy wizerunku uniwersytetu, wyobrażenie o innych polskich uniwersytetach, rekonstrukcję obrazu idealnego uniwersytetu. In this article the most important results and conclusions from two surveys are presented. Older men learning through religious and political affiliations : case studies from Malta
This article examines two case studies from Malta that focus on older men learning through informal channels. The first case study investigated the role of a community-based organisation – namely, a religious confraternity dedicated to ‘Our Lady of Immaculate Conception’ of the village of Mqabba – as an avenue for informal learning activities for older men. The second case study investigated the connection between affiliation in the Labour Party Veterans’ branch of the Labour Party (Malta) and informal learning. The case studies were carried out by employing a qualitative-methodological framework whereby data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The intent was to reveal the perceived interests and expectations regarding what would be considered a satisfying lifestyle in the context of membership of older men in both organisations. Findings reveal the benefits that older men enjoy through participation in such organisations, including increased levels of independence, improved social participation, and positive effects on participants’ self-esteem and personal confidence. Informants report that membership also contributed to their mental and physical health and to increased activity. Many underlined how participation aided them in escaping boredom and keeping in touch with the outside world. Findings also reveal that only a few informants were simultaneously involved in organisations and activities not related to their religious and political affiliations, which highlights the importance of both informal learning channels in helping older men lead successful and active livespeer-reviewe
