Hygieia. Identity, Cult and Reception
This article examines the Greek goddess Hygieia by looking at her identity, cult status in the ancient world and subsequent scholarly reception. Should she be viewed as a goddess or a personification? By studying Hygieia primarily as a concept of health within ancient medicine, as well as a personification and a goddess, it will be argued that religious and mythological figures should be viewed as deities within ancient Greek culture, rather than personifications. The article will consider Hygieia’s role in the cult of Asklepios and examine whether she is of greater importance because of her function as a goddess of healing, as well as discussing her role within emergent Christianity
Gerard Lukken herzien. Van inculturatie naar culturatie en weer terug. Een pleidooi voor een Lukken-Hoondert model
This article argues for a critical evaluation of Gerard Lukken’s concept of inculturation, which he tried to adapt to culturation, but still returned to inculturation asdominant concept. Further it will be argued that Lukkens' model is obsolete and sould therefore be adapted into a new concept: the Lukken-Hoondert model
A MAP approach to landmarking
Landmarking can be seen as calculating the maximum a posteriori probability of a certain set of landmarks given a certain image (texture) which contains a face. The MLLL plus BILBO algorithm by Beumer et al [1] is one method. An improvement to this existing landmarking algorithm, MLLL in combination with BILBO, is presented. MLLL uses a likelihood ratio based similarity score to mark candidate landmark locations. BILBO uses a statistical method on the shape to correct outliers. A theoretical analysis of this intuitive approach shows new insight. In order to verify this theory we performed a simple experiment. The results show that using the new method performs significantly better than when only using the similarity score method (MLLL) in combination with outlier removal (BILBO)
Application sharing services design and performance
Digital information is becoming increasingly integrated in our daily life. We can communicate with each other via e-mail and exchange documents, photographs and video fragments and use webcams during a telephone call ("nice for the kids"). Digital information is used in education to communicate with other students and teachers and it is used for commercial purposes and for public services: delivering information direct to citizens at home without visiting an office at any time a citizen wishes to obtain such information. This readily available digital information is causing new problems. Problems occur, for instance, because specific information can not be found on a website or on a digital form. Problems may also occur when filling in a digital form. Moreover, technical problems can occur, such as computer or program crashes, problems with the server or with printing the information needed. A new technology service concept called Audio Supported Application Sharing (ASAS) services can be used to solve these problems at a distance. When using ASAS technology the present forms of support and training face-to-face or via the telephone, are replaced by a new service to help clients. This service combines audio support, i.e. telephonic support, with application sharing, i.e. distance access to another's computer screen.Technology, Policy and Managemen

The Foundation of Anthropology to Ritual Studies
The present paper aims to investigate the role of anthropology in the development of Ritual Studies as an inter-disciplinary platform, with a focus on ritual dynamics by using a historiographic description, focusing on thetransition of Greco-Roman to Christian culture. This study attempts to shed light not only on the contributionof anthropology to Ritual Studies and how rituals are constantly changing, but it also underpins exploratoryanalysis on how religion and rituals have been researched by the first generation of scholars, like Edward Burnett Tylor, William Robertson Smith, James Frazer and Jane Ellen Harrison to scholars like Victor Turner, Ronald Grimes and more recent authors like Gil Renberg, Hedvig von Ehrenheim, Risto Uro and Richard DeMaris. Further, the goal is to clarify how anthropologists examined Christianity in Late Antiquity, thematized by the healing ritual temple sleep and stipulated by the examples used, to conclude how anthropological theories, like the liminality model of Arnold van Gennep, are applied to ritual healing. This study is innovative and challeng-ing through the application of Ritual Studies to the transition from Greco-Roman culture to Christian culture, with emphasis on ritual and change
A Woman’s Touch. Hygieia, Health and Incubation
In this paper, I argue that Hygieia has to be viewed as a full goddess in Greek religion and medicine, with a special focus on her position within the Asklepios cult. I will examine her identity, to which scholars attribute several labels like goddess, abstraction and personification. I further argue that Hygieia’s role in performing incubation rituals gradually became as important as that of her mythological father Asklepios, by examining her representation and the meaning of the ancient concept of health (ὑγίεια)
FROM JUPITER TO JESUS? A CLOSER LOOK AT THE IMPERIAL CULT OF CONSTANTINE THE GREAT
The present article discusses the so-called “conversion” of Constantine the Great, by using numismatics in relation to personal depictions of Constantine. It will be argued that Constantine never converted until his deathbed and that he favoured the Christians from a political standpoint to obtain their support for his laws and reign. His reign is characterized by ritual dynamics, in which Constantine switched between Apollo and Jesus, but was a convinced polytheist until he died
