Reconsidering Arminius: Beyond the Reformed and Wesleyan Divide
The theology of Dutch theologian Jacob Arminius has been misinterpreted and caricatured in both Reformed and Wesleyan circles. By revisiting Arminius's theology, the book hopes to be a constructive voice in the discourse between so-called Calvinists and Arminians. Traditionally, Arminius has been treated as a divisive figure in evangelical theology. Indeed, one might be able to describe classic evangelical theology up into the twentieth century in relation to his work: one was either an Arminian and accepted his theology or one was a Calvinist and rejected his theology. Although various other movements within evangelicalism have provided additional contour to the movement (fundamentalism, Pentecostalism, etc.), the Calvinist-Arminian 'divide' remains a significant one. What this book seeks to correct is the misinterpretation of Arminius as one whose theology provides a stark contrast to the Reformed tradition as a whole. Indeed, this book will demonstrate instead that Arminius is far more in line with Reformed orthodoxy than popularly believed and show that what emerges as Arminianism in the theology of the Remonstrants and Wesleyan movements was in fact not the theology of Arminius but a development of and sometimes departure from it. This book also brings Arminius into conversation with modern theology. To this end, it includes essays on the relationship between Arminius's theology and open theism and Neo-Reformed theology. In this way, this book fulfills the promise of the title by showing ways in which Arminius's theology—once properly understood—can serve as a resource of evangelical Wesleyans and Calvinists doing theology together today. Logging student answer data in CALL exercises to gauge feedback efficacy
An important advantage of online assessment work is that answer data can be easily stored and later analysed with a view to establishing the efficacy of the assessment methodology. A 5-year study of the effectiveness of online grammar exercises has been carried out at the University of Kent. The exercises featured require input in the form of whole sentences (since this is a more authentic test of language skills than single word input or multiple choice). Error feedback is generic (indicating where errors have occurred) rather than specific (indicating the exact nature of the errors) because the error-diagnosis system has been designed to be completely language independent. The study aimed to gauge whether this type of feedback is effective - in terms of enabling students to:
· identify the types of mistakes in their input;
· rectify the mistakes;
· learn from the mistakes and apply that learning to subsequent problems
There was initial concern that the generic feedback might not provide enough detail to enable users to understand and correct their errors - however extensive use by the University's Spanish department has shown that this type of mark-up is very effective. Chapelle (1998) stresses that it is important for learners to be given the opportunity to correct their linguistic errors. Users of this system, having failed to answer a question correctly on their first attempt, are permitted a second attempt. It is abundantly clear from the logged data that where users make mistakes in their first attempt (and they generally do since the material is designed to be testing), there is almost always a significant improvement in attempt two. This alone would be enough to show that the feedback mode is effective. However this was not enough to prove the pedagogical efficacy of this means of exercise presentation. Therefore more detailed analysis was performed. Over several years of trials more than 100,000 answers have been logged and every answer has been analysed. It can be shown that, for well-designed exercises, as students progress through an exercise they improve in three ways:
· more questions are answered correctly on the first attempt;
· overall questions scores (i.e. the average of 1st and 2nd attempts at questions) improve;
· thinking time for formulating answers decreases
The degree of increase in accuracy and decrease in thinking time is exercise-dependent, but the overall picture shows clearly that the generic, language-independent feedback is indeed effective. Moreover, it is easy to identify poorly designed exercises since they do not exhibit the characteristics listed above

Pore fluid pressure detection within the plate boundary fault interface of the Costa Rica convergent margin using AVO attributes
textI conducted an amplitude vs. offset (AVO) analysis on newly acquired 3D seismic reflection data to detect elevated pore fluid content and pore fluid pressure along the Costa Rica convergent margin to address dewatering processes of subduction zone sediments.
These data provide the highest quality 3D seismic data acquired to date along a convergent margin for detailed analysis of geophysical properties along the plate boundary fault interface. In 2011, a 55 km by 11 km 3D seismic reflection survey was completed using the R/V Marcus G. Langseth offshore western Costa Rica at the convergent margin of the Cocos and Caribbean plates. We applied pre-stack Kirchhoff time migration to a subset of these data across the frontal prism where amplitude versus offset (AVO) attributes were extracted along the decollement. When pore fluid pressure, l , exceeds 0.7,
the pressure at which Poisson’s ratio begins to approach that of water, the AVO response of a fluid-filled, clay-rich decollement requires a high Poisson’s ratio and an excessively low seismic P-wave and S-wave velocity. Acute wedge taper, undercompacted subducted hemipelagic and pelagic sediments, and a smooth decollement in the northwest half of the survey correspond with decollement AVO response of relatively high values of Poisson’s
ratio. These findings suggest increased pore fluid content and vertical containment of near-lithostatic pore fluid pressures within the decollement. In contrast, increased wedge taper angles, thin hemipelagic and pelagic sediments, and a rugose decollement beneath the southeastern frontal prism produce an AVO response interpreted as due to lower pore fluid contents and pressures. We propose that large-offset subducting basement normal faults in this area, as close as 20 m from the decollement, induce vertical fractures within the decollement that allow for fluid expulsion into the frontal prism and lower fluid pressure. Lateral variability of overpressure within the decollement shear zone of subduction
margins is important in understanding the evolution of frontal prism strain accumulation and seismogenic rupture.Earth and Planetary Science
Absorption Characteristics of U-63,287 as Evaluated by In Situ Rat Gut Perfusion
vi, 68 p.Bioavailability refers to the overall rate and extent to which the active form of a drug enters the general
circulation after oral administration. Bioavailability has
been found to depend on many factors, among them the rate of
dissolution of the dosage form, the permeability of the
intestinal mucosa to the drug, the rate of gastric emptying,
intestinal motility, and interactions between the drug and
intestinal contents. In characterizing the absorption of a
drug, experiments are done to determine the region of optimum absorption within the gastrointestinal tract, the
mechanism(s) and kinetics of absorption, and other critical
physiochemical and biological factors influencing
absorption. This project characterizes the absorption in the rat's intestines of U-63,287, an oral antidiabetic drug. The method used to study U-63,287's absorption is a modification
I of an in situ intestinal perfusion technique developed by
Schanker et al.(l958). The studies performed during this project include a comparison of the relative absorption
rates of U-63,287 in three different intestinal segments, a
quantitative analysis of absorption of U-63,287 from the
duodenum into the mesenteric lymph, a study of the relationship between perfusate residence time and intestinal
absorption, and a study of U-63,287 absorption at different pHs.Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, M
