    The dispersal and reuse of the spolia of Ostia are phenomena that have been thoroughly investigated. The novelty of this essay resides in some new hypotheses regarding the extent and the dynamics of the reuse, which seems to start in late antiquity. The identification of some discriminant criteria (based on typology, onomastics, and formulas) have led to an analysis being carried out on some centers along the Tyrrhenian coast, which in its turn has enabled the identification of inscriptions whose provenance appears to be Ostia or Rome, in the sites of Civitavecchia, Gravisca, Giglio Island, Pisa and some Sardinian locations such as Tergu. What has emerged is a situation wherein the reuse of the spolia from Ostia followed a developmental trajectory that expanded over time and in space, ranging from the first redistribution in late antiquity to the political-religious use made of the spolia in 11th-12th-century Pisa, the surrounding countryside, and the archipelago of islands in its possession

    Benzodiazepine Metabolism: An Analytical Perspective

    Benzodiazepines are currently among the most frequently prescribed drugs all over the world. They act as anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics, amnesics, antiepileptics and muscle relaxants. Despite their common chemical scaffold, these drugs differ in their pharmacokinetic and metabolic properties. In particular, they are biotransformed by different cytochrome P450 isoforms and also by different UDP-glucuronosyltransferase subtypes. The most important studies on the metabolic characteristics of several 1,4-benzodiazepines, carried out from 1998 onwards, are reported and briefly discussed in this review. Moreover, the analytical methods related to these studies are also described and commented upon and their most important characteristics are highlighted. Most methods are based on liquid chromatography, which provides wide applicability and good analytical performance granting high precision, accuracy and feasibility. Mass spectrometry is gaining widespread acceptance, particularly if the matrix is very complex and variable, such as human or animal blood. However, spectrophotometric detection is still used for this purpose and can grant sufficient selectivity and sensitivity when coupled to suitable sample pre-treatment procedures. A monograph is included for each of the following benzodiazepines: alprazolam, bromazepam, brotizolam, clotiazepam, diazepam, etizolam, flunitrazepam, lorazepam, midazolam, oxazepam and triazolam

    Therapeutic drug monitoring of recent antidepressants in patients under polypharmacy

    The introduction into clinical practice of the so-called second generation antidepressants has improved the treatment of depression, since these drugs, compared to the first generation antidepressants (such as imipramine and clomipramine), show a more favourable safety profile with respect to cardiovascular effects, whilst maintaining efficacy. Nevertheless, patients treated with these newer antidepressants can present undesired effects, including serotonin syndrome, sedation, body weight changes, sexual dysfunction and suicidal ideation. Therefore, with the aim of reducing the risk for toxic/side effects, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of second generation antidepressants is advisable, particularly in case of patients under polypharmacy. During the last years, a number of methods have been developed in our Laboratory for the accurate determination of antidepressant drugs and their metabolites in plasma samples obtained from patients, including drugs belonging to different classes of second-generation antidepressants (SSRI, NaSSA, SNRI). Sertraline, together with its main metabolite N-desmethylsertraline, can be analysed in plasma samples using a method based on capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection. The method employs a 488 nm wavelength laser and a sample pre-treatment procedure consisting in solid-phase extraction followed by derivatisation with fluorescein isothiocyanate. The high selectivity obtained allows the determination of sertraline in plasma samples from patients under polypharmacy. Capillary electrophoresis with diode-array detection has been employed for the enantioselective determination of mirtazapine and its active metabolite N-desmethylmirtazapine in human plasma. The method is quite fast: after a solid-phase extraction procedure, the electrophoretic run lasts 2.5 min. HPLC with fluorescence detection has been used for the determination of venlafaxine together with its main metabolite O-desmethylvenlafaxine, while HPLC coupled to UV detection was employed for the analysis of duloxetine in plasma of depressed patients

    A funerary inscription found at Ephesus records the cursus of a certain Menodorus, a fresh Roman citizen inscribed in the tribe Cornelia as well as praefectus fabrum and tribunus militum during his lifetime.     Giuseppe Salvago Raggi (1866-1946), nobile ligure, nato in una famiglia di cultura liberale, dopo aver studiato all'Istituto cesare Alfieri di Firenze fu diplomatico di carriera. Era a Pechino nel 1900 durante la cosiddetta "rivolta dei boxeur", quando fu dato per ucciso assieme alla sua famiglia. Fu governatore della colonia Eritrea dal 1906, e qui si distinse per un cambio della politica del suo predecessore Ferdinando Martini in diversi settori. Nel 1915 si arruolò volontario nella Grande guerra e ritornò in Italia. Partecipò nel dopoguerra alle negoziazioni a Versailles e fu nominato senatore a vita. Come liberale conservatore "fiancheggiò" la nascita del regime fascista, ma rifiutò sempre di iscriversi al Pnf e tenne in più occasioni atteggiamenti esplicitamente critici
