Constructing an Explanation of Illness with Children: A Sample Case Study of Juvenile Arthritis

    No full text
This study aimed to create a book to explain juvenile arthritis to newly diagnosed children, starting with the narratives of currently ill children. The development of the book followed a socio- constructivist approach and occurred over several stages, including: design of a comic-based workbook; conducting a workshop with ill children to listen to their experiences; collecting and organising the narratives into a children’s book; adding physician explanations; consulting with parents and medical practitioners; and design of the final product. All stages led to meaningful enhancements to the book. The socio-constructivist approach and the workshop’s open and friendly climate allowed children to express their conception of the illness, and to listen to and understand their peers’ points of view. Paediatric practitioners contributed to the project, providing clarity to the book and ensuring it would be scientifically sound and usable within the paediatric setting. In conclusion, written material addressed to children needs to be developed with a systematic methodology which takes a proper account of children’s voices. This can be achieved using a socio-constructivist approach and through an appropriate listening setting

Phytochemical characters of Teucrium marum from Sardinia: An endemic plant

    No full text
In this work the iridoidic fraction of Teucrium marum from Sardinia, was examined. A new clerodane, teumarin B, was isolated and identified by H-1- and C-13-NMR spectra analysis. The endemic character of this plant was further confirmed. Teumarin B showed cytotoxic properties

Quality evaluation of extra-virgin olive oils from Sicilian genotypes grown in a high-density system

Studying the sensory profile and chemical composition of monovarietal extra-virgin olive oils (EVOOs) is important to define and manage their quality and uniqueness. Chemical and sensory traits of olive oils from 14 minor Sicilian olive genotypes in comparison with oils from six major Sicilian and three international cultivars were analysed. Oils were extracted in 2015 from fruit of the 23 genotypes grown in an experimental orchard at a planting density of 1140 trees ha−1. Fatty acid composition, phenol composition, carotenoid content and antioxidant power were determined and analysed using univariate and multivariate procedures, in particular Nocellara Etnea along with carotenoid, phenol content and good sensory attributes, producing the best quality EVOO among the genotypes in trial. These results show that some Sicilian accessions used in this study may represent valid alternatives to produce high-quality EVOOs in modern, hedgerow planting systems

Naming the Child: Entering the Maternal Genealogy in Valeria Parrella’s Lo spazio bianco

Naming is usually seen as the first action that inscribes the newborn in a patriarchal genealogy, assigning to the subject a role, a position, and an identity in the symbolic order. However, it is possible to find ruptures that allow for a different signification, shifting the emphasis towards a maternal genealogy. The passage from a paternal to a maternal genealogy offers a perspective for a reading of Valeria Parrella’s Lo spazio bianco (2008). Maria, the 42-year-old protagonist of this book, gives birth to a premature baby girl after only six months of pregnancy. The baby is put in an incubator in the hope that she can grow and survive. At one point in the story, Maria decides to name her baby. I suggest that Maria’s act of naming her baby girl can be seen as an event which subverts the traditional mother/daughter role assigning Maria and her daughter their new subject-positions according to a maternal genealogy. Starting with an analysis of a number of feminist theorists’ take on naming, I will then examine the process of naming in Lo spazio bianco in the light of some of the theories on maternal/feminine subjectivity. I will integrate Luce Irigaray’s theory of maternal genealogy with notions derived from objectrelations psychology such as Jessica Benjamin’s “intersubjective space”, Nancy Chodorow’s and Jane Flax’s different ideas of mother/daughter relationships, and Christopher Bollas’ “unknown thought”; Lisa Baraitser’s Maternal Encounters will provide the focus for my analysis, while Bracha L. Ettinger’s “matrixial borderlinking trans-subjectivity” will be the final key for the reading of Maria’s delayed maternal subjectivity
