THE RELATION BETWEEN ATTITUDES TOWARD SAME-SEX PARENTING AND THE TRADITIONAL BELIEFS REGARDING GENDER ROLES WITHIN THE FAMILY: A CORRELATIONAL STUDY
Currently in Italy the same-sex parenting is an emerging issue, especially in relation to the recent parliamentary discussion on the civil partnership recognition. In the public debate over same-sex parenting, recurrent objections contends that a) families with same-sex parents deny the basic assumptions of the family concept, seen only as a natural institution centred on the marriage between a man and a woman; b) parental capacities are assumed to be closely linked to the female and male identity, naturally programmed respectively for motherhood and fatherhood; c) homosexuality affects negatively on the exercise of parenting skills; d) children need both a mother and a father. In summary, despite the impressive research evidences on the efficacy of families with same-sex parents, many individuals are concerned about the health and well-being of children raised by homosexual parents and defend the traditional family based on conceptions of natural rights. Starting from this consideration, this paper presents the preliminary results of a study that explored the correlation between the attitudes toward same-sex and heterosexual parenting, the attitudes toward children well-being, the traditional beliefs regarding gender roles within the family, the homophobic conception about family and parenting, and the attitudes about the social structure in terms of the defence and justification of the status quo and the social system. The study involved 1726 participants (1588 heterosexuals, 94 homosexuals and 43 bisexuals; 1062 women and 664 men; mean age = 31.63; SD = 11.43). They were asked to complete a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. The preliminary research findings showed the relationship between positive attitudes toward conventional family gender roles and negative attitudes toward same-sex-parenting. Furthermore, we verified that homophobic conceptions and social justification attitudes correlate with negative attitudes toward same-sex parenting. Our research findings suggest the possibility of effective interventions aimed to encourage more favourable attitudes toward same-sex parenting and deconstruct the traditional (homophobic) stereotypes about gender, family and parenting
Loneliness and new technologies in a group of Roman adolescents
This study was carried out on 331 Italian secondary school students (64 females and 267 males; their mean age was 17.25, S.D. = 0.87). The first aim of this study was to explore the relationships among type of class (computer science or not), gender and socio-economic status and frequency and modality of using the computer, Internet and the mobile phone. The second aim was to explore the relationship between the use of Internet and feelings of loneliness. Two instruments were administered: a questionnaire to explore some of the social habits of adolescents and their use of the three technologies considered, and the UCLA Loneliness Scale. The results confirmed that those with a higher socio-economic status use Internet more; the computer is used more by those who frequent a computer science section and by those with a higher socio-economic status. Loneliness emerged in relation to gender (higher in females), but not in relation to socio-economic status. Moreover it emerged at both the univariate and multivariate level in relation to the use of Internet and in negative relation to frequenting an informal peer group. A positive relationship between feelings of loneliness and number of friends who go on-line emerged only at the univariate level. The use of the mobile phone was almost completely independent of the variables examined here. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Self-reported psychological symptoms and severe stress events, but not patients’ gender, affect illness representation and medical advice by lay-referral network advisors
People who experience symptoms tend to discuss their ailments with other individuals who create their own illness representations, acting as intuitive physicians. We conducted two experimental studies to examine lay-referral network advisors' (i.e., acquaintances) representation of illness etiology and their recommendation to undergo health screenings for a man or woman with physical (vs. both physical and psychological) symptoms and a severe stressful (vs. no stressful) period in life. The presence of psychological and physical symptoms (Studies 1 and 2) and severe stressful life events (Study 2) affects lay-referral network advisors' disease representation. These factors cause participants to attribute symptoms etiology to psychological rather than organic factors and recommend more psychological screenings rather than physical ones. The simultaneous presence of psychological and physical symptoms and severe stressful events increases the likelihood of attributing the illness etiology to psychological factors, which increases participants' willingness to recommend psychological screenings. Study variables were unaffected by patient gender. The main findings, limitations, and future directions are discussed

THE MTSOCS: A MULTIDIMENSIONAL SENSE OF COMMUNITY SCALE FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES
The aim of this study was to validate the Multidimensional Territorial Sense of Community Scale (MTSOCS), a new theory-driven sense of community scale referred to the geographical community. Starting from McMillan and Chavis' theoretical dimensions, five subscales (Membership, Shared Influence, Social Climate and Bonds, Help in Case of Need, and Needs Fulfillment) were proposed. The MTSOCS, a sociodemographic questionnaire, and several other instruments were administered to three groups of adults (for a total of 781 participants). Confirmatory factor analysis of all participants' data showed that the five subscales were good from a statistical point of view. Tests of factorial invariance showed that the five-factor model of the MTSOCS is basically the same across different-sized territorial communities: small towns, cities and metropolis neighborhoods. the total score of the scale and the five subsclaes showed good construct validity. A positive relationship emerged between total MTSOCS score and participation in groups/associations, cohabitation, community identification, life satisfaction, perceived social support, interpersonal trust and trust in local government. More complex relationships emerged between the five subscales and the other variables, confirming the usefulness of also having the single subscale scores. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
