A brief note on the coarea formula

    No full text
In this note we consider a special case of the famous Coarea Formula whose initial proof (for functions from any Riemannian manifold of dimension 2 into R) is due to Kronrod (Uspechi Matem Nauk 5(1):24–134, 1950) and whose general proof (for Lipschitz maps between two Riemannian manifolds of dimensions n and p) is due to Federer (Am Math Soc 93:418–491, 1959). See also Maly et al. (Trans Am Math Soc 355(2):477–492, 2002), Fleming and Rishel (Arch Math 11(1):218–222, 1960) and references therein for further generalizations to Sobolev mappings and BV functions respectively. We propose two counterexamples which prove that the coarea formula that we can find in many references (for example Bérard (Spectral geometry: direct and inverse problems, Springer, 1987), Berger et al. (Le Spectre d’une Variété Riemannienne, Springer, 1971) and Gallot (Astérisque 163(164):31–91, 1988), is not valid when applied to C∞ functions. The gap appears only for the non generic set of non Morse functions

A short note on the mean exit time of the Brownian motion

    No full text
We investigate the functional (Formula presented.) where (Formula presented.) runs through the set of compact domains of fixed volume (Formula presented.) in any Riemannian manifold (Formula presented.) and where (Formula presented.) is the mean exit time from (Formula presented.) of the Brownian motion. We give an alternative analytical proof of a well-known fact on its critical points proved by McDonald: the critical points of (Formula presented.) are harmonic domains

Isolamento e plurilinguismo. Il caso dell'Ogliastra in Sardegna (secoli XVII-XVIII)

    No full text
Embedded between mountains and sea, in the eastern Sardinia, Ogliastra is often described as a fascinating region, an ideal place to spend a holiday, due to its rugged and wild natural landscapes, beautiful beaches and historical monuments. Ogliastra is also known for the longevity of its population and the high number of centenarians, but in the past it was considered one of the most isolated and underdeveloped areas in Sardinia. The isolation of Ogliastra, frequently highlighted by travel books, it was never absolute and was not an obstacle for the spread of Catalan and Castilian languages in the Modern Ages. The article, especially based on an analysis of notarial records, describes how these two languages were used in the writing context of Ogliastra and what was the role of Latin and Sardinian languages in the same context

Julien Benda’s political Europe and the treason of intellectuals

    No full text
Whenever the problem of the relationship between culture and politics is addressed, Julien Benda undoubtedly remains the most frequently mentioned author at the international level. His indictment of the intellectuals’ betrayal is as famous as his speeches to the European nation, published in 1933, about !ve years later than his widely difused La Trahison des clercs. Throughout the Discours à la nation européenne, the author explicitly addresses the intellectuals already mentioned in his previous essay and asks them to assume responsibility – becoming protagonists of a new moral revolution. His intention was to reply to Fichte’s well-known Reden an die deutsche Nation. The idea of Europe could be built to transcend nations, manifesting itself as the individual’s renunciation of himself. In this way, the idea of Europe might appear as a ‘moral act’: renouncing the distinct and the finite and turning to unity and infnity. Benda was aware of the possible rise of a type of ‘Europhile nationalism’. To prevent this, he saw it necessary to avoid the closure of the nation and prolong this movement of association so that it might increase its tendency to be inclusive. The political vision of Europe that Julien Benda hoped for should not generate European sovereignty. But, by prompting intellectuals to follow practical and political methods, he consciously exploits their role – stated in La Trahison des clercs – with the hope of building the moral and political framework of a united Europe

Napoleon, Fermat and some problems about triangles

    No full text
This paper deals with Napoleon Bonaparte’s special interest in science, and in particular, in mathematics and geometry. Some theorems about triangles ar e known as “Napoleon’s theorems” though the attribution is questionable. The paper also deals with the close link between Napoleon’s theorem and Fermat’s point. Moreover, Napoleon’s tessellation and some simple applications are investigated
