    No full text
Shirin Ashraf is a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Glasgow studying novel viruses from Uganda and other parts of Africa. She took part in HERStory Makers 2022.What is HERStory Makers?HERStory Makers is a social media competition for female-identifying early career researchers to share their research, their career journeys, and to inspire the next generation. Winners are selected by public vote. HERStory Makers is also part of EXPLORATHON, Scotland's contribution to European Researchers' Night. In 2022-23, EXPLORATHON was supported by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council [grant number EP/X020894/1].Author contributions to contentShirin Ashraf conceived, planned, and recorded the video content. Kirsty Ross edited the video content to insert HERStory Maker credits, add subtitles, and maintain video length below Twitter/X limit of 2 mins and 20 secs, prior to scheduling the social media posts.</p

The Rise of the Sursock Museum: The Power of the Image to Create an Image of Power

    No full text
The Sursock Museum is a cultural institution that has played a significant role in shaping the art scene in Beirut, Lebanon, and the wider region, since its establishment in the 1950s-60s. This paper examines how the Museum employed the rhetoric of images on multiple levels, including that of its donor, the architecture, as well as the art to consolidate its power in the second half of the twentieth century. As such, the Sursock Museum's policies helped construct its public image as a place of cultural and social significance, while also reflecting broader power structures and hierarchies in Lebanese society

IoD swarms collision avoidance via improved particle swarm optimization

    No full text
Drones flights have been investigated widely. In the presence of high density and complex missions, collision avoidance among swarm of drones and with environment obstacles becomes a challenging task and indispensable. This paper aims to enhance the optimality and rapidity of three dimensional IoD path generation by improving the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The improvements include using chaos map logic to initialize the population of PSO. Also, adaptive mutation is utilized to balance local and global search. Then, the inactive particles are replaced by new fresh particles to push the solution toward global optimal. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulation is carried out and the results are compared with slandered PSO and with recent work CIPSO. The results exhibit significant improvement in convergence speed as well as optimal solution which prove the ability of proposed method to generate safety path for IoD formation without collision with terrain obstacle and among drones. The authors would like to acknowledge the support of the department of the computer engineering at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals for this work.Ahmed, G (corresponding author), King Fahd Univ Petr & Minerals, Comp Engn Dept, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Architecture as Language of Peace

    No full text
Architecture as Language of Peace was released in August 2005 and published by Edizioni - Intra Moenia, Rome and Naples, Italy. The book is jointly edited by Donatella Mazzoleni, Giuseppe Anzani, Ashraf Salama, Marichela Sepe, and Maria Maddalena Simone. The contents of this book were formulated in the early months of 2003, and brought together two components: the achievements of the Design Laboratory involving 4th and 5th year architecture students at the Universit? di Napoli Federico II in 2001-2003 featuring "Spaces for encounters with Arab culture"; and the proceedings of the 2nd International Seminar on "Identity and Differences in Architecture" held in Naples (Napoli) in December 2002. The book features scholarly articles of academics from Europe, Australia, North Africa, and Middle East. Full papers are published in their original language with abstracts in Arabic and English

Automating the determination of wave speed using the pu-loop method

    No full text
The PU-loop (pressure-velocity loop) is a method for determining wave speed and relies on the linear relationship between the pressure and velocity in the absence of reflected waves. This linearity of the PU-loop during early systole, which is directly related to wave speed, has always been established by eye. This paper presents a new technique that establishes this linearity and thus determining wave speed online. Pressure and flow were measured in the ascending aorta of 11 anesthetised dogs. The slope of the PU-loop, indicating wave speed was determined by eye and by using the new technique. The difference between the slopes of the two methods is in the order of 3%. The new technique is convenient and allows for the online assessment of wave speed, which could be used as a bedside tool for the assessment of arterial compliance
