The anaphorae of the liturgy of Sts. Addai and Mari and the Byzantine liturgy of St. Basil the great: a comparative study
No full textWhile all Eucharistic anaphoras derive their primary significance from the Christ- event and Last Supper, each one also reflects and expresses a particular liturgical tradition within Christianity. Two important liturgies from antiquity that share several common similarities are the Anaphora of Sts. Addai and Mari and the Byzantine Anaphora of St. Basil the Great. A detailed analysis of the historical and linguistic idiosyncrasies of the two anaphoras shows that Addai and Mari is clearly the more ancient Eucharistic prayer, a product of an East Syrian environment with distinctive Semitic elements, that has led scholars to claim possible apostolic antiquity. On the other hand, Byzantine-Basil belongs to a larger family of anaphoras attributed to the Cappadocian Father himself or to some redactor(s) within his liturgical tradition, and primarily reflects hellenistic ideas. St. Basil's journeys to Egypt and Syria seem to be responsible for the production of a Coptic version of Basil, which shares some common elements with Addai and Mari. Also, the two 'hellenized' East Syrian liturgies of Theodore of Mopsuestia and Nestorius (including the Maronite anaphora Sharar), which are very similar to the content of Addai and Mari, may be partially credited for identifying points of contact between the East Syrian and Byzantine prayers. The purpose of this thesis is to analytically examine the Eucharistic prayers of Addai and Mari and Byzantine-Basil by breaking down both anaphoras into their constitutive sections (through textual juxtaposition) in order to determine and affirm their mutual influence. The methods used are verbal and structural comparison, historical contextualization, and theological comparison. Where applicable, sections from other related anaphoras are also compared against the two main texts. The study concludes that despite Addai and Mari and Byzantine-Basil's individual uniqueness in style and content, both nonetheless are representative of the original Christian Eucharistic tradition and have seemingly influenced each other's development throughout history

I Mari e i Cini: aspetti e problemi della società di Montevarchi fra Riforme e Rivoluzione
No full textL’accostamento nel titolo fra le famiglie Mari e Cini, le loro vicende destinate ad intrecciarsi in seguito ai legami matrimoniali, fornisce una chiave di lettura interessante per indagare alcuni aspetti dello sviluppo della società di Montevarchi fra la seconda metà del XVIII secolo e i primi anni della Restaurazione. Fu un periodo ricco di avvenimenti e di sviluppi; gli anni travagliati della fine del secolo furono caratterizzati dai moti giansenisti dei primi anni novanta, dalle vicende dell’ “insorgenza” del 1799 in cui i coniugi Mari furono protagonisti di primo piano, infine dalle vicende del ritorno dei francesi nell’autunno-inverno fra il 1800 e il 1801, ritorno che preluse al Regno d’Etruria e al successivo periodo dell’amministrazione francese dal 1808 al 1814. La presente ricerca – condotta prevalentemente su fonti notarili, parrocchiali e giudiziare – cerca di mettere in luce, attraverso le vicende familiari di alcuni dei protagonisti, le caratteristiche salienti della società locale, le strategie sociali e patrimoniali dei ceti dirigenti, i processi di cambiamento avviatisi in questo periodo. Quando il 10 giugno 1786 nella Chiesa di S. Maria del Campo di Firenze - sede fiorentina del vescovo di Fiesole - il Sig. Lorenzo del fu Filippo Mari “dette l’anello matrimoniale alla fanciulla Signora Lessandra del Sig. Orazio Cini” e furono congiunti in matrimonio dal Priore Girolamo Frilli su commissione del Proposto di Montevarchi Conti, si trattava di due mondi molto distanti fra di loro che entravano in contatto e si univano in un periodo assai particolare. Nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo la realtà di Montevarchi, al pari del resto della Toscana, era in un periodo di forti cambiamenti. Le riforme avviate dal principato di Pietro Leopoldo - sia in campo politico amministrativo che nelle strutture produttive del territorio - avevano investito numerosi aspetti della vita pubblica, incisero in profondità nella società del tempo, avrebbero avuto importanti conseguenze nel futuro
Credit risk analysis of mortgage loans: an application to the Italian market
No full textThe valuation of financial instruments in which both credit risk and interest rate risk are taken into account is an outstanding task for financial institutions. In this paper, we propose an affine-reduced model dealing with this topic. We show that this model offers analytical tractability as well as flexibility. We also show that the parameters of the model can be estimated via maximum likelihood in a straightforward way. To outline the procedure, we estimate the model on Italian data, using zero-coupon bond and historical default probabilities, as provided by the Bank of Italy. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Modeling neocortical areas with a modular neural network
No full textThe modular organization of neocortex has been speculated to have a role in the operation of memory retrieval. By introducing two modifications in the model considered by O'Kane and Treves (1992a, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen.), we have been able to increase the storage load limit and to destabilize the memory-glass states that marred the memory operation of the original model. The two modifications, a sparse rather than complete activation of cortical modules and a correlation between the patterns of activation and the underlying connectivity, are both consistent with available evidence.
