Methods for the Laboratory Evaluation of HAV-Related Comfort in Cyclists
Full text linkCyclists are exposed to hand–arm vibration (HAV) for prolonged periods of time during training sessions and competitions. The vibration can reduce perceived comfort, thus limiting the ability of the cyclist to control the bike in endurance sessions. The study of HAV in cyclists in a controlled environment allows for comparisons between the effects of different postures, materials and technical solutions on perceived discomfort and on the vibration transmitted to specific body segments. This paper describes the experimental setup, the measurement chain and the data processing for the evaluation of bike comfort in the laboratory. The setup is based on single-axis or multiaxial shakers; the time history of the input vibration can be derived from on-field measurements for comparative analyses or can be selected from among classical stimuli for frequency response function evaluation (sine sweep or white noise). Comfort can be quantified via questionnaires; objective measurements can be derived from vibrations measured at different body locations using wearable accelerometers or laser doppler vibrometers. NUMERICAL COMPARISON OF AN ELECTRIC TURBO COMPOUND APPLIED TO A SI AND A CI ENGINE
No full textIn a medium term scenario Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) downsizing and hybrid powertrain will represent the actual trend in vehicle technology to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emission. Concerning downsizing concept, to maintain a reasonable power level in small engines, the application of turbocharging is mandatory both for spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) engines. Following this aspect, the possibility to couple an electric machine to the turbocharger (electric turbo compound, ETC) to recover the residual energy of the exhaust gases is becoming more and more attractive, as demonstrated by several studies around the world and by the current application in the F1 Championship.
The present paper shows the first numerical results of a research program focused on the comparison of the benefits resulting from the application of an ETC to a small twin-cylinder SI engine (900 cm3) and to a four cylinders CI engine (1600 cm3), both of the same maximum power. Starting from the experimental maps of several turbines and compressors, complete model of both turbocharged engines were created using the AVL BOOST one-dimension code.
Concerning the SI engine, first numerical results show that ETC can improve the average overall efficiency at the highest engine speeds and loads. Besides, boost range extension in the lowest engine rotational speed region and a possible reduction of turbo lag represent other benefits related to ETC application.
On the other hand, the adoption of an ETC to a CI engine shows larger benefits in term energy recovery at the highest engine speeds, with consequent reduction of fuel consumption, mainly due to the absence of throttling effects in the intake manifold and related pumping losses
Who is the author of the 1876 Stefano manuscript?
Full text linkFor over one hundred years the Stefano manuscript was a private document in the possession of the Baccich family and descendants. It told a story of the 1875 Stefano shipwreck as narrated by the shipwreck survivor and the founding family patriarch Miho Baccich. In these circumstances the question of authorship of the manuscript was immaterial and did not arise as an issue. However, with the publication of the manuscript the author‟s name, or names, need to be formally attributed to it. It turns out that this is not such a clear-cut matter.
As we shall see, all informed sources attributed the authorship, and the ownership, of the manuscript to Miho Baccich. But the manuscript itself was written by Canon Stjepan Skurla – a priest from Miho‟s hometown of Dubrovnik. The question then arises: should Skurla also be considered as an author of the manuscript, or, even as the sole author (as some would have it)

Evaluating Discrete Dynamic Strategies in Affine Models
Full text linkWe consider the problem of measuring the performance of a dynamic strategy, rebalanced at a discrete set of dates, whose objective is that of replicating a claim in an incomplete market driven by a general multi-dimensional affine process. The main purpose of the paper is to propose a method to efficiently compute the expected value and variance of the hedging error of the strategy. Representing the pay-off the claim as an inverse Laplace transform, we are able to get semi-explicit formulas for strategies satisfying a certain property. The result is quite general and can be applied to a very rich class of models and strategies, including Delta hedging. We provide illustrations for the cases of interest rate models and Heston's stochastic volatility model.
