    In memoriam - Marek Edelman

The singularity of Zdążyć przed Panem Bogiem: translation and historical contextualization of the interview Marek Edelman gave to journalist Hanna Krall

Having gone more than 30 years without talking about his role as commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Poland during the Holocaust, Marek Edelman gave reporter Hanna Krall - both Jews, Poles, and Holocaust survivors - an interview that, later, entered the book Zdążyć przed Panem Bogiem (1976) translated as Chegar Antes de Deus. Between excerpts from a long account of the events in the Uprising and excerpts from scenes from Edelman\'s life as a cardiologist after the war, Krall proposes to retell the events of Edelman\'s life according to the ex-combatant\'s remembrance process, who, for having chosen to remain in Poland after the war, caused a clash with the Zionist movement that resulted in his testimonies being silenced for decades. In Brazil, especially, the works of Krall and Edelman are practically unknown. To change this scenario, a full translation of the text was made, from the original Polish to Portuguese, as well as its historical contextualization. The work is an important contribution to Brazilian Jewish Studies and Holocaust Studies by bringing into Portuguese new voices to the testimonies of survivors

The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function

This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

This project has been funded with support from the European Commission. This publication reflects the views only of the author, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein.Regular online and social media activity supported by honest and reasonably chosen content can pay off. The Dialogue Center like/follow rate is about 1000 new profile likes per year. We have been on Facebook for 4 years, on Youtube for 3, on Twitter for a year and on Pinterest for almost 6 months. We are open to new applications, we browse, we use social media and we encourage everyone in our work environment to use it. Despite the fact that many subjects we raise at the Dialogue Center „do not seem fitting” for social media, we try to keep the balance and use our tools in a way users accept and acknowledge. History can be told and discovered using social media, and it can be the first, hard step in communicating with those who do not seem interested in history (or local history). Do not force anything but do not underestimate the force of social media. Think about the audience as your partner in dialogue. Monitor, analyze and evaluate. Have fun and try to understand. Finally, don’t forget that #promotionneversleeps. The publication was co-funded by Culture programme of the European Union as a part of Campus Culturae project (grant No. 2011-1177/001-001)
