Ruskin e il suo doppio. Il “metodo” Ruskin

    No full text
«For myself, I am never satisfied that I have handled a subject properly till I have contradicted myself at least three times [...] ». This statement, which Ruskin referred to himself, together with other events and many opinions of contemporary and subsequent scholars, has always strongly influenced his image, generally considered a character of great moral and ethical influence, but with a little practical attitude. Vice versa, when examining his work from the beginning to the end, it seems to be possible to identify a broad vision, which links the first writings to the social and cultural commitment of the last times of his life, in which nothing seems to have ever been produced except within a broad project, in which the ability to observe and note down the reality of the built architecture is functional to the desire to affect it, in an attempt to correct the most harmful aspects. What can be defined as the Ruskin “metho

    Heritage Communities: cambio di paradigma?

    No full text
Projects of conservation and restoration of historical architectural heritage, like all design activities carried out in a specific place, are now in a paradigm shift: projects are gradually becoming more and more a product, involved from the start of the process to the end. This evolution, which sees the growth of associations and groups of volunteers interested in their heritage as a side effect, inevitably produces new processes and concepts, in which the built heritage must be increasingly seen as closely linked to the community of reference, both in terms of production of design ideas and in terms of its use and enhancement. This phenomenon, favored by legislative measures and sector charters, requires an adaptation of the approach on the part of those who carry out their own research on historical architectural heritage. Starting from an examination of the evolution of legislation and the measures that underlie this paradigm shift, the contribution aims to give a useful contribution to understanding what fundamental role the University as a public institution is called upon to play, in this new perspective

    Design Criteria and Strategies

ThischapterisdedicatedtothreeaspectsofHIMresearch.Firstofall,an analysis of the great step forward in the microclimatic functions of architectures, between the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries. This is at the basis of the conflicts that more and more often we see between physical architectures and their microclimate, which end up into slow but inexorable decay of buildings. Second, the nature of these phenomena, due to the imposition of an inadequate microclimate to a building, with an adequate support of literature. In the third and final part, strategies and interventions to reduce the risk of decay are presented along with evaluation criteria to intervene on historic indoor microclimate when this is needed

INDOOR MICROCLIMATE MONITORING: USE AND ISSUES. THE CASE OF THE REALM OF VENARIA REALE.

    No full text
With this paper we want to present a methodology for the indoor microclimate monitoring and data analysis, stating the related difficulties and issues. It will be presented the study of the indoor microclimate of two rooms, carried out in the Realm of Venaria Reale. This building is the result of six architects’ work, between 1659 and 1798: Amedeo Castellamonte, Michelangelo Garove, Filippo Juvarra, Benedetto Alfieri, Giuseppe Battista Piacenza e Carlo Randoni. The overarching aim is to involve, in the field of microclimate measurement, applicated on the Heritage Buildings’, the size-time in the subject matter and which permits to obtain new data, useful under the scientific and operational point of view. On this line of thinking, Marco Pretelli e Kristian Fabbri, have defined a specific field of research: the “Historic Indoor Microclimate” (HIM), which adopts an approach designed to consider the architectural and microclimatic context, starting from the disciplines which define the indoor microclimate study, introducing the study of the physical variables that determinate the indoor microclimate in a prolonged time dimension. Moreover, the paper is aimed to explain what are the most common issues which you could address during this kind of study, and to propose and to present a new index: the “Heritage Microclimate Risk” (HMR): the whole data and information that is possible to register by means of monitoring and which allows to identify a magnitude index to assess the HMR. In this way it is possible to evaluate the risk level to whom the goods are exposed and the level of the human’s comfort, to the end to improve it, in a vision which considers the conservation of goods and the comfort of the users in a coordinated way. Indeed, the best strategy to preserve the cultural heritage is the one that allows to detect in time any potential microclimatic risk, or rather situations where there is a danger due to the fact that actual parameters of the indoor environment are going beyond the set alert thresholds. The so-called “risk situations” can be determined by physical, chemical and biological factors: principal causes of the degradation. The study carried out on the two rooms of the Realm of Venaria Reale, includes the analysis of ten years probes’ data; the realisation of a virtual building model; the construction of a virtual environment model and its validation: by comparing the virtual data to the monitored ones. It permits to evaluate the actual, past and future conditions of the building, its goods and the people thermal comfort conditions. Moreover, we can envisage alternative scenarios, pre-emptively defining which actions could aid the preservation of the good, avoiding the risk component that would be taken working on the original. All this process entails many issues: about, for example, the data, which could have many gaps and errors, or incoherence, due to some different reasons as the malfunctioning of the probes or of the HVAC system; difficulties finding restoration data and archive documents; establishing the building’s thermo-physical characteristics; managing, on the virtual building model, the UTA (air-handling unit) and of the set-point data; obtaining information from different actors; etc. In our opinion, it is substantial knowing and thrashing out these kind issues, when you want to work on the field of monitoring and microclimate control

    Architecture and Indoor Microclimate

    No full text
In this chapter, the meaning of Historic Indoor Microclimate is debated, alongside with its relations with architecture, in particular historical one. This constitutes the main subject of the book, which holds high relevance in order to increase architectural knowledge, in the study of artistic and cultural heritage and in many other research in a wide range of fields

Factories and Industrial Buildings as a 1960 to 1980s Heritage. Issues for Their Preservation and Reuse

    No full text
In the endless world of stock built to house industrial activities, a few examples of buildings with heritage value stand out, difficult to distinguish at first glance from the rest of the stock. These are buildings often constructed by architects of quality, in which there are either construction solutions, or typologies, or finishes (or even all these elements together) that make those factories of exceptional interest from a technological, historical, social etc. point of view. On many occasions, these buildings end up forgotten and neglected and, after more or less long periods, end up being demolished and removed from memory; on other occasions, they have less definitive fates and are reused for new functions. Even on these occasions, however, they often end up losing their character and those elements for which they were considered remarkable. This contribution stems from some university research undertaken over the last decades on industrial buildings located mainly in southern Italy. The ways in which this particular heritage, which is only on very rare occasions protected by the protective rules of Italian law, is wiped out are the most diverse. In general, the greatest risks arise from incongruous new uses, in which the values it carries are not considered in any way. In this contribution we will try to put in order some useful questions to build a possible methodology to face the restoration project of ‘author factories’, defining ‘quality’ elements and factors

The Porticoes of Bologna and contemporary architecture. A proposal for a Minor Boundary Modification towards Kenzo Tange

After a long and complex process, the porticoes of Bologna were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 44th session of the International Committee held in Fuzhou, China, on 16-31 July 2021. Among the aspects emphasised was the extraordinary adaptability of the asset, which has been intermediating public and private space since the 12th century. In the second half of the 20th century, the updating of technologies, materials and ways of living confirmed the importance of the portico even in the suburbs, leading to the construction of fine examples such as the one in the Barca district, designed by Giuseppe Vaccaro. Included in the UNESCO selection, on the one hand this portico courageously opens up to the contemporary, while on the other hand it imposes a reflection on the most recent interpretations of the asset. Among these, one should at least consider Kenzo Tange's arcades at the Fiera District, which, due to their historical and urban value, deserve to be included in the UNESCO selection through a Minor Boundary Modification

Pietre di Rimini. L’Influenza di John Ruskin sul pensiero di Augusto Campana e i riverberi nella ricostruzione postbellica del Tempio Malatestiano

    No full text
While Rimini was bombed during the World War II, Augusto Campana decided to write a journal in order to track all the events and damages occurred to the stones composing the main monuments of the city. This gave him the idea for the title of his diary: Pietre di Rimini, an Italian translation of the Adrian Stokes’ Stones of Rimini, in turn recalling the Ruskin’s masterpiece The Stones of Venice. Thanks to the comparative reading of the journal and other works by Campana in relation to the English scholar’s thought, the paper aims at comprehending the Ruskin’s legacy in this specific context underlying contact points and divergences able to influence the aftermath restoration process with a double and contrasting vision
