Concrete gravity dams model parameters updating using static measurements

    No full text
The structural control of concrete gravity dams is of primary importance. In this context, numerical models play a fundamental role both to assess the vulnerability of gravity dams and to control their behaviour during normal operativity and after extreme events. In this regard, data monitoring represents an important source of information for numerical model calibrations. This study proposes a novel probabilistic procedure, defined in the Bayesian framework, to calibrate the parameters of finite elements models of dams. To this aim, monitoring data and the results of material tests are used as reference information. The computational burden is reduced by using a new hybrid-predictive model of the dam displacements. An application on an Italian dam shows the feasibility of the proposed procedure

    The road to faculty-librarian collaboration

    No full text
It is critical that citizens of a democratic society have a solid grounding in information literacy Several conceptions and definitions of information literacy have become prevalent. For example, one conception defines information literacy in terms of a set of competencies that an informed citizen of an information society ought to possess to participate intelligently and skills. The author believes that an effective way to achieve this goal is for faculty and librarians to collaborate on ways to teach these skills to students. As proof of the efficacy of faculty-librarian collaboration the author presents an example that is based on his collaborative experiences with faculty

Distinctive neuronal firing patterns in subterritories of the subthalamic nucleus

    No full text
Objective : Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN–DBS) is an established treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Anatomical connectivity analyses and task-related physiological studies have divided the STN into different functional domains: sensorimotor, limbic, and associative – located in its dorsolateral (dSTN), anteroventral (vSTN) and medial territories, respectively. Targeting sensorimotor STN is essential for stimulation efficacy and is supported by intraoperative micro-electrode recordings. A different neuronal signature in microelectrode recordings across STN subterritories was explored in this study. Methods: Stable recordings from 30 PD patients were assigned to dSTN or vSTN by means of an anatomical method (based on fused computed tomography/magnetic resonance images) and through a priori tri-segmented partition of the recording itself. We computed the inter-spike interval (ISI) and ISI-characteristics, mean firing rate (MFR), discharge patterns and mean burst rate (MBR) of each detected single unit activity. Results: We showed a different MBR between dSTN and vSTN (1.51 ± 0.18 vs. 1.76 ± 0.22 events/minute, Wilcoxon rank sum test, p < 0.05) and a trend in the difference between their MFR (12.78 vs. 15.05 Hz, Wilcoxon rank sum test, p = 0.053) only with the anatomically based method

Täysivaltaisuus kasvatustavoitteena? Nykyaikaisen kasvatustieteen vaarasta kadottaa subjektinsa

In the first part of the article, the author deals with the question of the extent to which modern educational science has, by way of certain research orientations, changed into an utilitarian instrumentology. There is reason to suspect that an individual student is no longer perceived as a subject; instead, that student is treated as an object as a consequence subordinated to techno-economic interests, for instance. The second part of the article is an attempt by the author to show, with the writings of Marcuse as the basis, the consequences of the materialistic conception of students and people in general in education systems and educational sciences. The article looks at the concept of single dimensionality in the light of a few examples. Finally, the author analyses Marcuse’s thought on pedagogy applying it to the present day reality.Artikkelin ensimmäinen osa käsittelee kysymystä, missä määrin moderni kasvatustiede on tiettyjen tutkimussuuntaustensa kautta muuttunut utilitaristiseksi instrumenttiopiksi.

Strengthening of an Al-Cu-Mg alloy processed by high-pressure torsion due to clusters, defects and defect-cluster complexes

    No full text
A physically-based model is established to predict the strength of cluster strengthened ultrafine-grained ternary alloys processed by severe plastic deformation. The model incorporates strengthening due to dislocations, grain refinement, co-clusters (due to short range order and modulus strengthening) and solute segregation. The model is applied to predict strengthening in an Al-Cu-Mg alloy processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT). The microstructure was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atom probe tomography (APT), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Analysis of XRD line profile broadening shows that the dislocation density increases significantly due to severe plastic deformation, which contributes to the increase of strength. APT reveals the presence of nanoscale co-clusters and defect-solute clustering. The concepts of the multiple local interaction energies between solutes and dislocations were used to quantitatively explain the strengthening mechanisms. The model shows a good correspondence with measured microstructure data and measured strength

Hybrid Low Level Petri Nets in Environmental Modeling - Development Platform and Case Studies

    No full text
In this contribution, a prototypical development platform is presented, which supports model development of standard and hybrid low level Petri nets with respect to the requirements of environmental modeling. The basic theory of hybrid Petri nets with important extensions for ecological modeling are summarized, and the development platform is briefly described. Two examples are chosen fro detailed study: Petri net as integrating framework for a hybrid crop growth model based on ordinary differential equation systems, and a population/migration model for the Galápagos archipelago

    No full text

    No full text
