Convergence rate in terms of the continuous ssim (Cssim) index in rbf interpolation
The Structural Similarity index (SSIM) is a very popular tool for the evaluation of the similarity between two images. In this work, we extend it by introducing the continuous SSIM (cSSIM) index. Then, focusing on Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation, we provide theoretical results concerning the convergence rate of a RBF interpolant in terms of the cSSIM index. The theoretical findings are then confirmed by numerical experiments
Over-diagnosis and over-treatment for suspected gastroesophageal reflux. How it happened, why it's wrong and what we can do
The guidelines state that there is no evidence to support the use of antacid medications for empirical treatment for diagnostic purposes in infants and young children where symptoms suggestive of GERD are not specific. These symptoms, in the vast majority of cases, resolve spontaneously over time. The issue is to understand and interpret the "specificity" and meaning of some of the symptoms in children that the guidelines mention
Democratic genetics
A fast surrogate cross validation algorithm for meshfree RBF collocation approaches
Cross-validation is an important tool in the Radial Basis Function (RBF) collocation setting, especially for the crucial tuning of the shape parameter related to the radial basis function. In this paper, we define a new efficient surrogate cross-validation algorithm, which computes an accurate approximation of the true validation error with much less computational effort with respect to a standard implementation. The proposed scheme is first analyzed and described in detail and then tested in various numerical experiments that confirm its efficiency and effectiveness
A note on the usage of the pinv MATLAB function
In MATLAB, the function pinv is the default choice when computing the Moore-Penrose inverse of a matrix. In this note, we discuss possible alternative strategies for its calculation and we show that such built-in function might not represent an optimal choice in some cases. The presentation is supported by a detailed step-by-step MATLAB implementation
Amoxicillin: When the essential is missing|Amoxicillina: quando manca l’essenziale
e antibiotic amoxicillin is usually recommended as a first-line treatment for many common infections affecting children. Repeated lockdowns related to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic have contributed to supply difficulties for many drugs, including antibiotics. However, the risks associated with amoxicillin supply shortages appear not to have been sufficiently assessed, and the crisis we are facing today is serious and particularly danger- ous for children’s health. Without rigorous measures to prevent shortages related to drug production and distribution, populations could face a post-antibiotic era in which common infections and minor injuries can result in serious life-threatening situations. The availability of medicines declared by WHO as essential should be guaranteed not only in production but also in fair distribution. And this principle must be ensured by national and international regulatory agencies
The mothers and children department: Significance, current use and rebirth
The extension of Rippa’s algorithm beyond LOOCV
Rippa's algorithm is a well-known Leave-One-Out Cross Validation (LOOCV) scheme that is adopted in Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation for the tuning of the shape parameter. Indeed, it provides remarkable advantages concerning the computational cost with respect to a standard implementation. In this paper, we extend such algorithm to work in a more general k-fold CV setting. After providing a theoretical formulation and proving that the proposed scheme computes an exact k-fold CV, we compare it to a standard k-fold CV implementation. Especially when k gets large, the saving in computational cost is evident
A possible Copernican revolution for the pediatrician: Diet does not prevent allergies
Early introduction rather than avoidance may be a better strategy for the prevention of food allergy. The mechanism may be that early introduction of food allergens during infancy might induce tolerance, thereby preventing the development of allerg
