Marcellus of Ancyra in modern research

    No full text
This thesis gives a detailed overview of modem research on Marcellus of Ancyra. It is divided into three parts: the first part deals with the person of Marcellus, his life, work, theology and historical influence as seen by different scholars. Especially in the questions of chronology and Marcellus' orthodoxy, a consensus is yet to be achieved. The second, largest part analyses in detail the ascriptions of certain pseudepigrapha to the pen of Marcellus by modem scholarship: the writings De Sancta Ecclesia, Sermo Maior de Fide, Ekthesis Pisteos, De Incarnatione et Contra Arianos, Contra Theopaschitas (or Epistula ad Liberium).A critical review of modem scholarly literature in this matter shows that only De Sancta Ecclesia and Contra Theopaschitas could have a claim to Marcellan authorship, but also that the real problem is one of methodological decisions: are the undisputed Fragments of Marcellus the only criterion for ascribing other works to him? Is the apparent shift towards orthodoxy which is documented in Fragment 129 (Epistula ad lulium) genuine? If so, does it open the way towards the ascription of clearly orthodox writings which show differences in their theology to the theology of the Fragments? Modern scholarship has not yet come up with a final answer to these questions; the thesis can only point to new fields of research and make French, Italian and especially German literature accessible to English scholars for this purpose by summarizing the results achieved so far. The third part of the thesis contains translations of some short texts dealt with in part two

Marcellus Education Fact Sheet State Tax Implications of Marcellus Shale: What the Pennsylvania Data Say in 2010

    No full text
natural gas in Pennsylvania has brought with it many changes to parts of the Commonwealth. Because of the rather recent nature of the drilling activity, the extent of its effects on local economies and state tax collections has not been clearly understood. Marcellus-related activity can affect these through several means. Leasing and royalty income paid to mineral right owners increases household income, and since it is taxable under the state’s personal income tax, it will affect state income tax collections. Increases in local employment or earnings due to Marcellus-related work can likewise affect state income tax collections. If mineral right owners and those employed due to Marcellus development spend more money locally, state sales tax collections can increase. If development of Marcellus shale affects local real estate markets, it may similarly affect realty transfer tax collections. It still is very early in the development of Marcellus shale, so much cannot be known about its full long-term economic implications. However, recent state tax collection information gathered by the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue can provide some insight into the short-term economic and state tax implications of gas development in the Commonwealth. This fact sheet provides basic analysis of state tax information as reported in the Departmen

Athanasius' contra arianos iv: a reconsideration

    No full text
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a through reconsideration of the treatise Oratio IV Contra Arianos (hereinafter referred to as CAR IV), which historically is attributed to St. Athanasius. This reconsideration addresses three main areas of inquiry:1. Is it defensible to consider Athanasius to be the author of CAR IV in terms of linguistics and theology?2. Since the Athanasian premise is not universally accepted, what other authors are suggested by patristics scholars?3. Regardless of authorship, what theological value does CAR IV hold for the contemporary reader? It is this author's contention that CAR IV, though a lesser-known writing of the Nicene period, is a very significant treatise. CAR IV offers a valuable insight into the theologically rich and complex world of the fourth century church. In CAR IV, by way of refutation, we are introduced to a view as radical and persistent as Arianism but less often discussed - modalistic monarchianism. An understanding of all the varied doctrines that did battle at Nicea leads to a greater appreciation for the endurance of the tradition expressed in the Nicene creed. In conclusion, the present author finds the argument that CAR IV is genuinely Athanasian but separate from the other three Orations to be the most convincing theory yet expounded. CAR IV would be more properly titled Contra Marcellum. Perhaps Athanasius never gave this title to the work in deference to Marcellus. Only Athanasius, Marcellus' friend, would demonstrate this consideration. It is also suggested that CAR IV was an incomplete rough draft. The author of this thesis agrees with this reasoning also, and after contemplation would further this explanation by hypothesizing that CAR IV was an incomplete text of Athanasius that was collected and arranged in its current form posthumously by students of the Bishop
