Peanuts minus Schulz: Distributed Labor as a Compositional Practice
This article reflects on the future of comics in an interconnected globalized world where, it is argued, digital technologies both accelerate change in partly-uncharted territories, and redefine the contemporary disenchantment with information flows. As a case study, the author uses their project Peanuts minus Schulz and discusses the ethos of post-digital conceptual comics and how distributed digital labor is used as an opaque, material and possibly disruptive compositional practice.Peer reviewe
Chimeras.Inventory of Synthetic Cognition
editorial reviewedThis volume attempts to disassemble and reformulate what one might understand as AI by taking apart both notions of 'artificiality' and 'intelligence' and seeing what new meaning they produce when recombined. We summon the trickster of the natural order, chimera, both a mythical creature and a genetic phenomenon. Drawing upon chimerism allows us to broaden 'artificial intelligence' into 'synthetic cognition'—an approach that highlights the duality of 'artificial' and 'authentic', amplifies non-human methods of cognition and anticipates modes of symbiosis. With this aim, the editors, Ilan Manouach and Anna Engelhardt, assembled an inventory in which one can find contributions from scholars and artists with interspecies, disability, monstrous, feminist, and decolonial approaches, as well as thinkers and technologists engaged in a broader field of AI. By questioning fabricated norms that constitute and maintain notions of 'artificial' and 'intelligence', this inventory acts as a toolbox one can use to merge these terms into a novel chimera
Appropriation in Comics as a Form of Political Commentary
<p>Comics Censorship</p>
<p>With Ilan Manouach (GR) artist, curator and researcher, Xavier Löwenthal (BE), author and publisher. The talk moves from liberal laws for publishers in Belgium and how they permit the use of the right of parody for comment, to shine a critical light on commercial successes such as Peyot’s Black Smurfs or Art Spiegelman’s Maus.</p>

Comics for University Nerds! How to make your own comics using digital productivity tools
In this workshop you will be invited to use your existing tools and methods- the bleak spreadsheets, abandoned flickr accounts, the rogue JSON and XML files or Obsidian notes and logs – to explore hidden narrative and visualization potentials. Your final product will be a work of multimodal articulation, more than just an artistic production but a means to disseminate new forms of knowledge that can be helpful for your individual research tracks. No prior drawing experience required, only bring your own data (BYOD) and LAPTOP!
The workshop will be led by CDHU Visiting Researcher, Ilan Manouach (https://ilanmanouach.com/).
Ilan Manouach is a comics artist and a postdoctoral scholar on "Computational Creativity" at the University of Liège. He is also an affiliate scholar at Harvard metaLAB, a member of Racliffe’s Institute for Climate Sound & Society, and an affiliate researcher at Paris VIII with Labo Paragraph. He is the author of over 25 comic books and the editor of Chimeras. Inventory of Synthetic Cognition, a collective glossary on AI, with 150 contributors exploring a variety of epistemic perspectives on artificial intelligence: interspecies, crip, monstrous, feminist, distributed, and decolonial, among others. He is an appointed expert on the comic book industry to the Belgian government and worked as a strategy consultant for the Onassis Foundation. He is the founder of Echo Chamber a non-profit organization dedicated to comics research (part of the Creative Europe consortium of Expanded publishing), and the founder of Topovoros Books, a Greek publishing house spearheading translations of cornerstone essays in humanities. He is the creator of Shapereader (2014-), a system of tactile comics for people with visual disabilities and the co-creator of the first algorithmic cartoon generator, The Neural Yorker (2019-2023). His work is the subject of a dedicated Routledge critical anthology and his latest book, Out Side, is a collaboration with K Allado-McDowell, founder of Google’s AMI program.
The workshop will break for lunch at kl.12 (on your own cost), and will provide an afternoon fika; please indicate any allergies in your registration
Comic books as Ontographs: The composition process of Abrégé de Bande Dessinée Franco-Belge
In this paper I examine the composition process of my book Abrégé de bande dessinée franco-belge, published in 2018 and under the book catalog of eight comics publishers. Abrégé was built following the precepts of ontography, a model of conceptual representation for objects theorized by video game designer and Object Oriented Ontology philosopher Ian Bogost. Abrégé presents a visual a personal typology of graphemes drawn from a shared reservoir of the Franco-Belgian bande dessinée tradition, where one can find a variety of comics proto-memes, metanarrative devices, paratextual elements and building blocks of the European BD.En este artículo examino el proceso de composición de mi libro Abrégé de bande dessinée franco-belge, publicado en 2018 y bajo el catálogo de libros de ocho editoriales de cómics.
