Benjamin Karim: Remembering Malcolm
Benjamin Karim (July 14, 1932 - August 2, 2005) was an African American Muslim minister, author, and orator. He was born Benjamin Goodman, in Suffolk, VA., the son of Wilbur Bryant and Mary Goodman. Young Goodman was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. After serving in the military, Goodman worked as a recording engineer with a record company when he first heard Malcolm X speak in 1957, and his experience caused him to convert to the Nation of Islam (NOI), cease many secular activities, change his diet, and become sober.
A dedicated student of African and African American history, Karim re-educated himself and over the next seven years, adopted the name Benjamin 2X, and became one of the closest aides to Malcolm X. He supervised an educational program at the NOI temple in Harlem, and stood in for Malcolm X at some events held around the United States

Maternal Oral Health Status and Preterm Low Birth Weight at Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania: A Case-Control Study.
The study examined the relationship between oral health status (periodontal disease and carious pulpal exposure (CPE)) and preterm low-birth-weight (PTLBW) infant deliveries among Tanzanian-African mothers at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Tanzania. A retrospective case-control study was conducted, involving 373 postpartum mothers aged 14-44 years (PTLBW--150 cases) and at term normal-birth-weight (TNBW)--223 controls), using structured questionnaire and full-mouth examination for periodontal and dentition status. The mean number of sites with gingival bleeding was higher in PTLBW than in TNBW (P = 0.026). No significant differences were observed for sites with plaque, calculus, teeth with decay, missing, filling (DMFT) between PTLBW and TNBW. Controlling for known risk factors in all post-partum (n = 373), and primiparaous (n = 206) mothers, no significant differences were found regarding periodontal disease diagnosis threshold (PDT) (four sites or more that had probing periodontal pocket depth 4+mm and gingival bleeding > or = 30% sites), and CPE between cases and controls. Significant risk factors for PTLBW among primi- and multiparous mothers together were age < or = 19 years (adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) = 2.09, 95% Confidence interval (95% CI): 1.18-3.67, P = 0.011), hypertension (aOR = 2.44, (95% CI): 1.20-4.93, P = 0.013) and being un-married (aOR = 1.59, (95% CI): 1.00-2.53, P = 0.049). For primiparous mothers significant risk factors for PTLBW were age < or = 19 years (aOR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.13 - 3.81, P = 0.019), and being un-married (aOR = 2.58, 95% CI: 1.42-4.67, P = 0.002). These clinical findings show no evidence for periodontal disease or carious pulpal exposure being significant risk factors in PTLBW infant delivery among Tanzanian-Africans mothers at MNH, except for young age, hypertension, and being unmarried. Further research incorporating periodontal pathogens is recommended

An Interview with Kim Zarins, author of Sometimes We Tell the Truth
In this interview conducted by Mohamed Karim Dhouib, author and medievalist Kim Zarins discusses her young adult novel Sometimes We Tell the Truth (2016), a contemporary retelling of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The novel reimagines Chaucer’s iconic pilgrims as modern teenagers on a bus trip to Washington, D.C. Zarins reflects on the process of adaptation, such as portraying the Pardoner as intersex—while emphasizing the pedagogical value of retellings in making medieval literature more accessible. She advocates for inclusive approaches to teaching and explains how her own novel has inspired student engagement with Chaucer. The conversation also delves into Zarins’ interactive classroom strategies that help students form meaningful connections with premodern texts. The interview ultimately reveals how creative adaptations and innovative teaching methods can help contemporary audiences access, discover, and appreciate both the striking differences and surprising similarities between Chaucer’s era and today
Abdul Karim Jamak dan pemikirannya tentang konsep ketuhanan / Ahmad Zuhdi
As a scholar in Kerinci District, Abdul Karim Jamak's thinking needs to be examined in the middle of society, as previously the teachings of Islam taught to his students are seen and understood by the local community by stating that he developed deviant teachings. Of course, such views are not acceptable only to the truth of the teachings they convey. His students are not only from the general public, but also educators, government officials and lecturers, and others. People should see clearly what Abdul Karim Jamak teaches. Consequently, before the conclusions and decisions of the deviation, not a single flow of flow and the teachings developed by a group of scholars, both individually and collectively, need to carry out several approaches and various methods. The study, entitled 'Abdul Karim Jamak and His Thoughts on the Divine Concept', uses qualitative research methods through two approaches namely Historical approach and Islamic theory approach. His ultimate aim is to study and examine the biography of Abdul Karim Jamak and his Thoughts on the Divine Concept. Which in detail talks about, Nature of God, the concept of God's Action and Qada and qadar. From research findings it can be seen that Abdul Karim Jamak is a famous scholar, who has fought with his missionary activities inviting the Muslim community in Kerinci to practice the teachings of Islam in accordance with the law of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. From the concept of his thinking about the Godhead. Abdul Karim Jamak follows the thinking of Asyā'irah, based on the Quran and the hadith of the Prophet. S.a.w His divine teachings that have been understood and practiced have implicated his students and the Muslim community of Kerinci even to the archipelago. Abdul Karim Jamak deserves the title of Kiyai Haji (Kh) after developing his concept of Islamic thought and the concept of Divine not contrary to the Qur'an and the hadith
A revised completeness result for the simply typed -calculus using realizability semantics
In this paper, we define a new realizability semantics for the simply typed
lambda-mu-calculus. We show that if a term is typable, then it inhabits the
interpretation of its type. We also prove a completeness result of our
realizability semantics using a particular term model. This paper corrects some
errors in [21] by the first author and Saber

Predictors of Stunting, Wasting and Underweight among Tanzanian Children Born to HIV-Infected Women.
Children born to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected women are susceptible to undernutrition, but modifiable risk factors and the time course of the development of undernutrition have not been well characterized. The objective of this study was to identify maternal, socioeconomic and child characteristics that are associated with stunting, wasting and underweight among Tanzanian children born to HIV-infected mothers, followed from 6 weeks of age for 24 months. Maternal and socioeconomic characteristics were recorded during pregnancy, data pertaining to the infant's birth were collected immediately after delivery, morbidity histories and anthropometric measurements were performed monthly. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards methods were used to assess the association between potential predictors and the time to first episode of stunting, wasting and underweight. A total of 2387 infants (54.0% male) were enrolled and followed for a median duration of 21.2 months. The respective prevalence of prematurity (<37 weeks) and low birth weight (<2500 g) was 15.2% and 7.0%; 11.3% of infants were HIV-positive at 6 weeks. Median time to first episode of stunting, wasting and underweight was 8.7, 7.2 and 7.0 months, respectively. Low maternal education, few household possessions, low infant birth weight, child HIV infection and male sex were all independent predictors of stunting, wasting and underweight. In addition, preterm infants were more likely to become wasted and underweight, whereas those with a low Apgar score at birth were more likely to become stunted. Interventions to improve maternal education and nutritional status, reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and increase birth weight may lower the risk of undernutrition among children born to HIV-infected women
Bank stability measures for dual banking system
Bank stability is of paramount importance in the growth of the economy, sustainability and going concern of the financial sector. Thus, it places high reliance on the measures to indicate the stability of the financial institution. There are many indicators used as measures for bank stability. However, the recent Global Financial Crisis showed that despite reports of ‘healthy’ financial institution prior to crisis, these institutions suffered many problems including liquidity, during the crisis. Thus, this led to confusion on reliance of important components of a healthy financial institutions as indicators, leading to loss of confidence on the overall stability of the financial system. Therefore, there is an urgent need for review of the current measures of bank stability that look at the indicators used as measures of banking stability across different jurisdictions. This study aims to develop bank stability index as a measure of bank stability in countries with dual banking system. This methodology rely on qualitative review of literatures and report produced by central banks of different jurisdictions. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved
