CRISIS AND CONTAGION IN CRYPTOCURRENCY MARKET
The paper examines whether an unanticipated event like the COVID-19 crisis has strengthened the contagion in the cryptocurrency market utilizing samples of data representing the pre-crisis and post-crisis periods. Employing the wavelet coherence and DCC-GARCH(1,1) models, we identify that the cryptocurrency market started integrating from 2018 as volatility within the market reduced. Our main finding is that the cryptocurrency market is highly interconnected and that the contagion strengthened during the crisis period. We draw appropriate policy implications from these findings
Exploring Key Factors Leading to Low Performance in Mathematics of J & K Students in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA): A Rational Analysis
Mathematics is one of the core subjects in the curriculum at national and international levelas the direct implication on fostering various important qualities such as creativity, logicaland abstract thinking, problem solving, originality and curiosity among the learners, by thesubject Mathematics. However, it is quite disheartening to note that the low performance ofIndian students at international assessment in Mathematics as reported by PISA 2009, Indianstudents ranked second last among 73 countries. Kumar & Karimi (2010) found that theanxiety in Mathematics has a negative effect with Mathematics performance and achievementthough it has also been found that a degree of cognitive anxiety (worry and concern) maymotivate students to try harder. Also, (Guin, 2018) observed that Phobia in Mathematics isnot genetic but highly contagious. Every negative comment to the subject like it is hard,boring, abstract, useless etc. puts a negative image about Mathematics among the children. Inthe present study, the author has critically reasoned out the key factors leading to lowperformance of the students such as emphasis on rote memory than competency skills likecritical, collaborative and creative thinking, connection the school knowledge to real lifesetting, rigidity in problem solving, shortage of qualified professional Mathematics teachers,more emphasis on completion of syllabus rather than meaningful learning of Mathematicsconcepts, inadequate Mathematics laboratories, improper teaching methods, system ofassessment, student’s understanding of conceptual and procedural knowledge in themain operations, rigidity in problem solving, etc. The present paper also highlighted thepedagogical factors, administration factors, institutional factors and evaluation factors inorder to reason out the present status of mathematics learning in specific context to Indianschools. The paper has also been supported with the inferences drawn through an empiricallyconducted pilot study by the investigator on teachers and students with the purpose to identifythe factors affecting the performance of students in Mathematics. The study has also includedsome concrete suggestions and recommendations to be employed at micro (Classroom level)and macro level (Administration/Institutional level) so as to improve performance of thelearners in Mathematics
Amazonian plants from ethnomedicine to biotechnology through pharmaceutical biology approaches: a PhD experience in connecting forest with laboratory
The South american Natives, Shuar and Achuar people and their ethnomedical culture constitute the
background subject of the Phd research, performed both in Ecuador (Salesian Politechnic University,
Quito), and in Italy (Pharmaceutical biology labs, University of Ferrara). Based on ethnomedical
responses, Piper aduncum, Maytenus macrocarpa, Schinus molle, Tecoma stans and Eugenia hallii were
chosen as amazonian plant species subject of the research.
AIMS
The research has been focused on:
− checking the presence of endophytic fungi in plants;
− isolating and subculturing pure endophytic strains;
− checking the biotransformation capacity of the isolated endophytes on pure compounds; the most
performing endophytes were also tested on phytocomplexes and pure chemicals obtained by the
plant from which the fungi were isolated;
− phytochemical characterization and bioactivity assays of plant extracts: P. aduncum.
−
METHODS
Biotransformations. Fresh aerial plant parts were properly washed in sanitizing solutions and in vitro
cultured using adequate solid media to isolate endophytes. (+/-)-cis-bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-en-6-one,
acetophenone, 1-indanone, 2-furyl methyl ketone, 2-methylcyclopentanone, 2-methylcyclohexanone, 2-
methoxycyclohexanone were chosen as substrate model for biotransformations. The cultures were
sampled after 1, 3, 7, 10 days of culturing, and ethyl acetate extracted to verify by GC-MS the presence of
possible biotransformation products. Biotransformations were also checked on P. aduncum whole
essential oil and on dillapiol, cis-ocimene, piperitone, (-)-terpinen-4-ol as most abundant chemicals.
Chemical fingerprinting of P. aduncum essential oil. Steam distillation was adopted to obtain the essential
oil, then characterized by GC-MS, NMR analyses.
In vitro bioassays of P. aduncum essential oil. Antimicrobial activities were checked in vitro using proper
agarized media to reach MIC. Antioxidant capacities were checked through DPPH test, ABTS and
photochemiluminescence assays. Born's turbidimetric method and Writhing test were respectively
adopted to check platelet-aggregation and anti-nociceptive properties. Mutagenic, antimutagenic
properties and toxicity were assayed using classical and modified Ames test.
MAIN RESULTS
364 fungal strains were in vitro isolated. Among all, 5 strains performed biotransformations on
acetophenone to (S)-1-phenylethanol, with important yields (78-97%) and enantiomeric excess (78-
100%). Three strains gave also phenols probably by enzymatic reactions (Baeyer-Villiger oxidations). 15
fungal strains gave the lactones (-)-(1S,5R)-2-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-6-en-3-one and (-)-(1R,5S)-3-
oxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-6-en-2-one from (+/-)-cis-bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-en-6-one, probably as result of
monooxygenase activation. Phytochemical characterization of P. aduncum essential oil has evidenced
dillapiol as the most abundant terpene, followed by cis-ocimene, piperitone and terpinen-4-ol. Only cisocimene
and piperitone gave several biotransformation products through dehydrogenation and
hydroxylation reactions. The essential oil has evidenced non-mutagenic properties and interesting
antifungal and antioxidant activities.
CONCLUSIONS
Several endophytic fungal strains from Amazonian plants were isolated and checked for
biotransformations on pure chemicals and on P. aduncum essential oil. Data obtained will be useful for
possible following patents about micro-organisms able to transform pharmaceutically interesting
chemicals. Taxonomical characterization of the most performing fungal strains is still in progress. P.
aduncum essential oil can be considered genotoxically safe and provides interesting antifungal and
antioxidant properties, supporting its ethnomedical use as cicatrising and disinfectant crude drug and
suggesting an extension of its employ as preservative ingredient
Lysosomal storage diseases - The horizon expands
Since the discovery of the lysosome in 1955, advances have been made in understanding the key roles and functions of this organelle. The concept of lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) - disorders characterized by aberrant, excessive storage of cellular material in lysosomes - developed following the discovery of α-glucosidase deficiency as the cause of Pompe disease in 1963. Great strides have since been made in understanding the pathobiology of LSDs and the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs). The NCLs are neurodegenerative disorders that display symptoms of cognitive and motor decline, seizures, blindness, early death, and accumulation of lipofuscin in various cell types, and also show some similarities to 'classic' LSDs. Defective lysosomal storage can occur in many cell types, but the CNS and PNS are particularly vulnerable to LSDs and NCLs, being affected in two-thirds of these disorders. Most LSDs are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, with the exception of X-linked Hunter disease, Fabry disease and Danon disease, and a variant type of adult NCL (Kuf disease). This Review provides a summary of known LSDs, and the pathways affected in these disorders. Existing therapies and barriers to development of novel and improved treatments for LSDs and NCLs are also discussed. © 2013 Macmillan Publishers Limited.Abbott MA, 2011, MOL GENET METAB, V104, P583, DOI 10.1016-j.ymgme.2011.08.003; Aerts JM, 2008, P NATL ACAD SCI USA, V105, P2812, DOI 10.1073-pnas.0712309105; Aliabadi H, 2010, NEUROSURGERY, V67, P1476, DOI 10.1227-NEU.0b013e3181f8c11d; Al Sawaf S, 2008, J INHERIT METAB DIS, V31, P473, DOI 10.1007-s10545-008-0878-x; Alvarez VE, 2012, BBA-PROTEINS PROTEOM, V1824, P195, DOI 10.1016-j.bbapap.2011.05.011; [Anonymous], 2009, SUMM GAUCH DIS PAT P; Arsov T, 2011, AM J HUM GENET, V88, P566, DOI 10.1016-j.ajhg.2011.04.004; ARVIO M, 1993, ACTA PAEDIATR, V82, P587, DOI 10.1111-j.1651-2227.1993.tb12761.x; Auffray C, 2011, GENOME MED, V3, DOI 10.1186-gm220; AULA P, 1979, ARCH NEUROL-CHICAGO, V36, P88; Bailey L., 2008, ONLINE J ISSUE UNPUB, V13, P3; Ballabio A, 2009, BBA-MOL CELL RES, V1793, P684, DOI 10.1016-j.bbamcr.2008.12.001; B'chir W., NUCL ACIDS RES; Batten FE., 1903, T OPHTHAL SOC UK, V23, P386; Benitez BA, 2011, PLOS ONE, V6, DOI 10.1371-journal.pone.0026741; Berkovic SE, 2008, AM J HUM GENET, V82, P673, DOI 10.1016-j.ajhg.2007.12.019; Biegstraaten M, 2012, MOL GENET METAB, V106, P135, DOI 10.1016-j.ymgme.2012.03.010; Bielschowsky M., 1913, DEUTSCHE Z NERVENHEI, V50, P7; Birch DG, 1999, MOL GENET METAB, V66, P356, DOI 10.1006-mgme.1999.2829; Bonten EJ, 2004, FASEB J, V18, P971, DOI 10.1096-fj.03-0941fje; Boustany R.
