Excavations at Tel Qishron - The lithic assemblage
The lithic assemblage of Tel Qishron can be divided into two components discovered in the
same layers, but which belong to different periods: the Middle Paleolithic and the 3rd millennium
BCE, respectively. The first group, recognized during the excavation but not analyzed in detail, is
composed of patinated flakes and blades produced using the Levallois technology. These items, clearly intrusive in the Intermediate Bronze Age strata, show strong analogies with the lithic
assemblage of the Middle Paleolithic quarry site found few meters away.1 The second group, identified during the excavation by virtue of the flint not being patinated, is comprised of ten Canaanean blades, the only diagnostic items studied in detail and the subject of this analysis
The decline and disappearance of chipped-stone tools: A case-study from the Southern Levant
The shift from stone to metal is considered as one of the main technological changes in the history of the mankind.
In the Southern Levant, although the first metal objects appeared during the Chalcolithic, flint tools continued to be
produced through the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age. The coexistence of these technologies for more
than three millennia represents a complex phenomenon, which can be analysed from different perspectives recognizing
the various factors in the history of technological change: 1. The specific evolutionary path of the objects, technologies
and techniques and 2. The socio-historical contingencies which explain the success or failure of a technique. The
comparison between the chipped-stone tool productions and their contemporaneous metal objects allows us to observe
the dynamics which explain the disappearance of flint industries in terms of their relationship with the development
of metallurg

Ma découverte de l'approche boëdienne a été totalement inattendue. Cela n'a pas été un coup de foudre, au contraire. Neither diffusion of ideas nor simple trade of objects: the moving of specialized Canaanean blade knappers during the Early Bronze Age in the Southern Levant
Canaanean blades are large standardized flint blades mainly used as sickle inserts, and are
one of the lithic hallmarks of the Early Bronze Age in the Southern Levant. Recent studies
combining a detailed technological analysis and spatial distribution of the entire range of
Canaanean production waste, debitage and tools offer new insights into the appearance of
this sophisticated technology in the region, and into the organization of its production/consumption system. In the Southern Levant, Canaanean blades were produced using the leverpressure systems. The absence of the evolutionary stages required for the invention of this
technique indicates that it must have spread to the Southern Levant from another core area.
Considering the difficulties in learning and mastering the lever-pressure technique, and the
lack of a “sophisticated” technological background able to reproduce it, the emergence of
the Canaanean blade technology reflects the movement of some knappers. Given the time
required to master the lever-pressure technique, and the necessity to maintain the knapping
skills with regular practice and elevated productivity, only a few expert knappers were contemporaneously active, supplying the mass consumption of Canaanean blades in the region.
As indicated by the spatial segmentation of the chaîne opératoire, itinerant knappers moved
from their workshops to other places, villages and cities, exchanging and producing blades
along their routes
Adventures in the flint trade: the complexities and implications of tabular scraper exchange in the Levantine Protohistoric periods
Flint Trade in the Protohistoric Levant offers an in-depth case study of the production and
exchange of tabular scrapers. Crossing cultural and ecological boundaries and traded from
the desert to the settled zone, these tools encompassed both ritual and quotidian functions
over the course of well over the two millennia of the existence of the exchange system.
Analyses focus on the changing nature of the production systems, dynamics of value in
changing contexts of production and use, ritual contexts and meaning. Extending
throughout the Levant, the tabular scraper complex is compared and contrasted to
other contemporary production and exchange systems (ceramics, chipped stone, ground
stone, copper, beads), offering a rich picture of the complexities of late prehistoric trade,
transcending linear evolutionary frameworks, and simple models. Adopting a chaîne
opératoire approach to the use-life of the artifacts, the artifacts can be seen to transform
over time and place, made, used, recycled, and ultimately discarded, each stage in its own
cultural contexts. The rise and decline of this exchange complex reflects both the geopolitical history of the region and the general role of lithic industries in these societies.
Focusing on late prehistoric times in the Near East, the discussions will be of relevance
to all researchers interested in the role of exchange in the evolution of complex economies.
