A two-page letter from Hui man Fai (Minhui Xu) to James Huff McCurdy, dated January 28, 1923. In the letter Mr. Hui outlines the credits has received from the YMCA College, eventually known as George Williams College, in Chicago. He goes on to explain what some of the courses entailed and what classes he is taking at the point he was writing the letter.Minhui Xu, or Man Fai Hui as he was knonw when he was at Springfield College, is recognized the pioneer of development of Chinese soccer and volleyball. Xu is a very famous professor in sport and physical education field and made a great of contribution in Chinese volleyball and swimming. Therefore, during the 1920s-1930s, there was a common saying, “the Northern China has Ma Yuehan, and the Southern China has Xu Minhui”. Minhui Xu was born in April 18th, 1890 in Kaiping, Guangdong province. In his young age, Xu was very lively and active and liked to play sports, especially track and soccer. While Xu studied in Nan Wu (Private) Middle School (1904- 1913), he represented the school win the Group Champion in the Guangdong Province Games twice. In 1910, Xu represented the Southern China to compete in the First National Games and started to be well-known in Chinese sport world. In 1913, Xu was selected to the national track and soccer team in the First Far East Asian Games. Xu won the

Cycadophila (Cycadophila) fupingensis Skelley, Tang & Xu Figs. 2 A, 2D, 3E–H Cycadophila fupingensis Skelley, Tang & Xu in Xu et al. 2015: 12 –17. Adult diagnosis. A member of the C. (Cycadophila) fupingensis species group as discussed above, distinguished from other species of the genus by the narrow protibia lacking stout setae apically, short supraocular stria, fine pronotal punctation, and having a small elytral maculation. Full descriptions and images of adults and larvae are presented in Xu et al. (2015). Type locality. China, Guangxi Province, Debao County, Fuping village, 23°29.624'N, 106°12.980'E. Range. Known from Debao and Napo Counties of Guangxi Province, China on Cycas debaoensis. The range of this host, C. debaoensis, extends to Banshui, Baise City, Guangxi Province and Funing County, Yunnan Province with 16 known natural populations (Xie et al. 2005; Fang 2009). In Vietnam it occurs in Hoa Binh Province, Lac Thuy Distr. on C. hoabinhensis. Material examined. Holotype, allotype and paratypes as stated in Xu et al. (2015). Others examined: CHINA, Yunnan Province, Red River Valley, nr. Man Hao, 23°01'N, 103°24'E, 955m, 12 May 1996, W. Tang, ex near receptive ♀ strobilus of Cycas diannanensis (type locality), WT 50 (2); Guilinchin Town, near Jingping, 22°46'N, 103°15'E, 9 May 1996, S.- L. Yang, ex ♂ strobilus of Cycas dolichopylla, WT 52 (4). VIETNAM, Hoa Binh Province, Lac Thuy Distr., Phu Lao Comm., 20°33'19″N, 105°45'42″E, 50–100m, 25-IV-2015, N. S. Khang ex ♂ Cycas hoabinhensis (1). These are deposited at ANIC and FSCA. Remarks. Xu et al. (2015) demonstrated that adults and larvae occur together in male cones of Cycas debaoensis, where they appear to feed and reproduce.Published as part of Skelley, Paul, Xu, Guang, Tang, William, Lindström, Anders J., Marler, Thomas, Khuraijam, Jibankumar Singh, Singh, Rita & Rich, Stephen, 2017, Review of Cycadophila Xu, Tang & Skelley (Coleoptera: Erotylidae: Pharaxonothinae) inhabiting Cycas (Cycadaceae) in Asia, with descriptions of a new subgenus and thirteen new species, pp. 1-63 in Zootaxa 4267 (1) on pages 21-22, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.57564

Effect of β-crystals on the mechanical and electrical properties of β-nucleated isotactic polypropylene

    No full text
Polypropylene has great potential as a thermoplastic insulation material for high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable. However, its mechanical properties restrict its application, particularly at low temperature. In this paper, isotactic polypropylene (iPP) with the β-nucleating agent WBG was prepared by the melt blending method. The crystallinity, β-crystal proportion and crystalline morphology were analyzed by wide-angle X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and polarized optical microscopy. The results showed that the crystallinity and β-crystal proportion increased as the WBG concentration increased. Three types of β-crystal morphology, namely β-spherulite, flower-like agglomerate and β-quasi-spherulite, were sequentially obtained with increasing WBG concentration. The mechanical properties, space charge distribution, thermally stimulated discharge current and DC electrical breakdown strength were investigated. Compared with pure iPP, the Izod impact strength and DC breakdown strength of iPP/0.1%WBG were improved by 238 and 16%, respectively, and the fracture energy and brittleness temperature of iPP/0.3%WBG were improved by 420 and 80%, respectively. In addition, the space charge accumulation was suppressed in the range of 0.1-0.5 wt% WBG. Chain coupling between the β-crystals and the amorphous phase, particularly in the flower-like agglomerates, was considered to play an important role in improving the mechanical and electrical performance.</p

Dynamic monitoring and seismic assessment of a historic masonry tower

    No full text
After the Italian earthquakes of May 2012, an extensive research program has been performed to assess the state of preservation of the tallest historic tower in Mantua, Italy. The paper summarizes the information provided by visual inspection and dynamic tests, clearly highlighting the poor structural condition and the high seismic vulnerability of the upper part of the tower. Subsequently, the permanent dynamic monitoring system installed on the tower, with structural health monitoring and seismic early warning purposes, is described and the results of the first months of monitoring are presented and discussed

The work presented here could not have been possible without the support and encouragement of my advisors, colleagues, friends, and family. I would like to express my gratitude to the members of my thesis committee, starting with my thesis advisor Dr. Huizhong Xu, whose guidance and support is largely responsible for the completion of this thesis. His endless feedback, encouragement, and patience not only made this work possible but also shaped my education and my current approach to research. Furthermore, I would like to express my appreciation to Dr. Weining Man and Dr. Maarten Golterman, not only for taking the time to read this thesis and for providing their invaluable feedback, but also for their exceptional guidance during their courses that I was privileged to take part in. I would also like to thank Dr. AKM Newaz, who was originally a member of this committee prior to his untimely passing. His warm demeanor and encouragement directed me in part towards this theoretical topic, despite being a committed experimentalist. I give thanks to the members of the nano-optics lab, not only for wonderous barbeque luncheons, but also for their camaraderie and feedback over the years. I would like to give special thanks to Dominic Ditmyer, Adam Duran, Justine Rafael, Shivam Gangwani, and Hon-Loen Sinn for their friendship, support, and herculean combined efforts during study sessions. Finally, I would like to thank my parents Shabnam and Reza for standing by me in unwavering support, and to whom I owe my curiosity and passion for science.https://doi.org/10.46569/m039kd26
