Dimitrios Tsamis Karatasos : a symbol of Greek, Serbian and Bulgarian friendship

    No full text
Two Serbian texts extol the contribution of Dimitrios Tsamis Karatasos to the Balkan joint effort to throw off the Ottoman yoke. These texts are analysed by the author within the historical framework of their period, so that the man’s personality and work may be accurately evaluated from a fresh viewpoint. More specifically, the author conducts a research on the tombstone of Dimitrios Tsamis Karatasos, which he discovered himself at Naoussa, and the octet engraved on it, which is also published here. The work is illustrated by seven plates, of which four have not been published previously

The Exemplary Life of Dimitrios Vikelas (1835-1908)

    No full text
This paper describes the "satisfying curve" of Dimitrios Vikelas' life journey, starting from Syros in 1835, moving via Constantinople, Odessa, and Syros again, to London, Paris and finally Athens. It explores Vikelas' multiple aspects, as merchant, writer, traveller, lecturer and essayist, Olympic founder, educationalist, book collector and philanthropist, all of which were united in the public-spirited man of letters (logios). It sets Vikelas in the context of the Greek commercial diaspora, the world of the London expatriate Greek community, and the dynamic society of late nineteenth-century Athens, beginning in the 1870s to act as a magnet to Greek expatriates. The author stresses two qualities of Vikelas: his belief in the idea of a progressive Greek state marked by advances in education, culture, tourism and standards of public life; and the self-awareness and experience which inform his autobiographical writings, not only his memoir My Life but also his last such work, The War of 1897

Chemical and enzymatic site-selective modification of proteins for novel structure and function

    No full text
Chemo-enzymatic modification of biomolecules is a powerful method of controlling the function and structure of proteins and enhancing them with de novo functionalities. This work explores the use of chemical and enzymatic modification strategies for the site selective modification of recombinant protein constructs, with the aim of creating new imaging tools, and modifications relevant in physiology and disease. Chapter 1 summarises the literature on the introduction of unnatural amino acids in proteins with focus on chemo-selective methods of Post-Translational Modification strategies. Chapter 2 presents the development of the Di-Gluebody, a disulfide linked nanobody dimer, used as a scaffold for the cryo-EM imaging and structural elucidation of very small proteins. Chapter 3 reports on the use of the fluorinase enzyme, as a method of 18F radiolabelling of suitably modified nanobodies and describes attempts to expand the scope of the reaction in living systems. Chapter 4 lays the foundations of novel chemoenzymatic strategies, allowing the L- to D-Cys stereoinversion of cysteine in proteins

Methodology studies on one and two carbon ring expansion on polyether polycyclic natural products

Medium sized cyclic ethers are found in many natural products, with the most notable example being the polyether polycyclic family of marine toxins. Due to their increased size loss of entropy, torsional strain and unfavourable transannular interactions, as well as other effects require different synthetic approaches than the smaller homologues. In this work, different pathways were explored for the efficient synthesis of the seven-, eight- and nine- membered rings of marine polyether polycyclic natural products, through the expansion of a common six-membered ether substrate. The effect of the Lewis acid promoted TMS-diazomethane ring expansion of cyclic ketones was investigated and was successfully applied for the efficient synthesis of the oxepane and oxocane ring systems. Furthemore, a [2+2] cycloaddition between a seven-membered cyclic silyl enol ether and ethyl propiolate was examined for the concise formation of nine-membered cyclic ethers from an easily accessible substrate
