Motivi letterari nei libri per l’infanzia di Paolo Di Paolo

    No full text
The article, organised in the form of a discussion, aims to analyse the themes and motifs of Paolo Di Paolo’s works that are addressed to young audiences. The author has recently published a large number of volumes directed just at younger readers. When beholding the titles that constitute the author’s bibliography, the reader is struck by Di Paolo’s predisposition to transform literary classics: as much in Giacomo il signor bambino as in the edition of the Divina Commedia, the author’s goal is to try to reach his new readers. Therefore, Di Paolo proves to be a prolific author of the genre; in fact, in his bibliography, volumes of fairy tales with a classic slant, such as La mucca volante, are listed as well.L’articolo contiene un’analisi di temi e di motivi delle opere di Paolo Di Paolo dirette al pubblico più piccolo.

Globulelike Conformation and Enhanced Diffusion of Active Polymers

We study the dynamics and conformation of polymers composed by active monomers. By means of Brownian dynamics simulations we show that, when the direction of the self-propulsion of each monomer is aligned with the backbone, the polymer undergoes a coil-to-globulelike transition, highlighted by a marked change of the scaling exponent of the gyration radius. Concurrently, the diffusion coefficient of the center of mass of the polymer becomes essentially independent of the polymer size for sufficiently long polymers or large magnitudes of the self-propulsion. These effects are reduced when the self-propulsion of the monomers is not bound to be tangent to the backbone of the polymer. Our results, rationalized by a minimal stochastic model, open new routes for activity-controlled polymers and, possibly, for a new generation of polymer-based drug carriers

Activity-Induced Collapse and Arrest of Active Polymer Rings

We investigate, using numerical simulations, the conformations of isolated active ring polymers. We find that their behavior depends crucially on their size: Short rings (N≲100) swell, whereas longer rings (N≳200) collapse, at sufficiently high activity. By investigating the nonequilibrium process leading to the steady state, we find a universal route driving both outcomes; we highlight the central role of steric interactions, at variance with linear chains, and of topology conservation. We further show that the collapsed rings are arrested by looking at different observables, all underlining the presence of an extremely long timescales at the steady state, associated with the internal dynamics of the collapsed section. Finally, we found that in some circumstances the collapsed state spins about its axis

The article examines - in the centenary of his birth - the "political thought" of Pier Paolo Pasolini. Therefore, it scrutinizes (above all) his writings on society, but there are frequent incursions into the literature and especially into the cinema of this completely original author. What emerges is the depth of concepts often used by the poet to analyze and criticize the present: New Prehistory, new capitalism, consumerism, hedonism, Power, the Palace, the Process, development and progress, sacredness in primis. It also shows how Pasolini's eye and judgment were mainly guided by passion and only by reason. His homosexuality also played a significant role in his perception of reality. In the final part of the paper we analyze some technical tools used by the author to carry out his work of understanding the present and its consequent artistic-critical translation

Electroosmosis in nanopores: computational methods and technological applications

Electroosmosis is a fascinating effect where liquid motion is induced by an applied electric field. Counter ions accumulate in the vicinity of charged surfaces, triggering a coupling between liquid mass transport and external electric field. In nanofluidic technologies, where surfaces play an exacerbated role, electroosmosis is thus of primary importance. Its consequences on transport properties in biological and synthetic nanopores are subtle and intricate. Thorough understanding is therefore challenging yet crucial to fully assess the mechanisms at play. Here, we review recent progress on computational techniques for the analysis of electroosmosis and discuss technological applications, in particular for nanopore sensing devices

Non-monotonous translocation time of polymers across pores

Polymers confined in corrugated channels, i.e. channels of varying amplitude, display {multiple local maxima and minima of the diffusion coefficient upon increasing their degree of polymerization NN}. We propose a theoretical effective free energy for linear polymers based on a Fick-Jacobs approach. We validate the predictions against numerical data, obtaining quantitative agreement for {the effective free energy, the diffusion coefficient and the Mean First Passage Time}. Finally, we employ the effective free energy to compute the polymer lengths NminN_{min} at which the diffusion coefficient presents a minimum: we find a scaling expression that we rationalize with a blob model. Our results could be useful to design porous adsorbers, that separate polymers of different sizes without the action of an external flow.Comment: 6 pages,7 figures + Supplemental 4 pages, 6 figure

This recording and transcript form part of a collection of podcasts conducted by the Cultures of Energy at Rice University. Cultures of Energy brings writers, artists and scholars together to talk, think and feel their way into the Anthropocene. We cover serious issues like climate change, species extinction and energy transition. But we also try to confront seemingly huge and insurmountable problems with insight, creativity and laughter. Here's a little preview of the Cultures of Energy Podcast! Look for episodes on iTunes and Stitcher as soon as all the tubes get connected and all the magic podcast elves work through their holiday shopping. Cymene and Dominic answer the question ‘why do an energy humanities podcast?’ and confess their past radio sins. Then (9:14) Dominic interviews Hugo and Nebula award winning science fiction writer Paolo Bacigalupi, author of the The Windup Girl and The Water Knife, about what science fiction can do in the era of climate change
