Serieuse selfstandige soeker: C M van den Heever (1902-1957)
English: The Afrikaans poet and author C M van den Heever was the first professor of Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of the Witwatersrand. During the term of his appointment (1933-1957) he played a key role in the development of Afrikaans cultural life in Johannesburg and in interpreting events and developments in the fields of literature and cultural politics. He was a dedicated supporter of close ties between the Dutch, Flemish and Afrikaans cultures. He strongly approved Prime Minister J B M Hertzog’s policy of reconciliation between Afrikaans- and Englishspeaking South Africans and criticised the cultural politics of many leading Afrikaansand English-speaking South Africans of his day. He is generally regarded as the first writer of the Thirties generation, although his work did not develop along the lines that later became typical of the Dertigers. In some ways he was a forerunner of N P van Wyk Louw’s ideas on the role of Afrikaner intellectuals, the importance of critical thought and the need for a liberal Afrikaner nationalism.Afrikaans: Die Afrikaanse skrywer en digter C M van den Heever was die eerste professor in Afrikaans en Nederlands aan die Universiteit van die Witwatersrand. Autism screening in children: using the social communication questionnaire in a Western Cape population
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has a global prevalence of approximately one percent of all new births. There is a lack of literature on autism in South Africa. South African children are waiting years for diagnoses, despite the fact that early diagnosis and subsequent intervention appear to have a positive effect on the outcomes of the intervention. A screening device to detect ASD could be used to speed up the diagnostic process. This study tested the viability of using the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) in a Western Cape state-funded hospital. This thesis describes Phase 1 of a larger study. The 40 item SCQ was adapted and translated into Afrikaans and isiXhosa. The English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa versions of the SCQ were administered to parents of very young children attending the Red Cross Children?s Hospital?s developmental clinic (N = 228, age range of children = 3.00-5.97 years). Positive results were that no relationship was found between age and SCQ score, or between SCQ language version and SCQ score were found. However there was a relationship between SCQ score and socioeconomic status, indicating a possible bias in the SCQ. Internal reliability of the SCQ versions was analysed and was satisfactory. The factor structure of the English SCQ was examined. Two and four factor solutions were explored, with the two factor solution proving the best fit with good internal reliability. This two factor solution reflected the recent changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, as well as previous findings on the SCQ and the ADI-R, the diagnostic instrument on which the SCQ was based. Preliminary results of Phase 2 of the larger study were analysed. Eighteen children received an Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) assessment;; the current gold standard for diagnosing ASD. SCQ scores proved to be a good predictor of ASD diagnosis, predicting 17 out of 18 individuals correctly. Further research on isiXhosa and Afrikaans versions of the SCQ as well as the predictive power, sensitivity and specificity and cut-off scores for the SCQ is recommended
Estimation of unconfined aquifer hydraulic properties using gravity and drawdown data
2011 Fall.Includes bibliographical references. An unconfined aquifer test using temporal gravity measurements was conducted in shallow alluvium near Fort Collins, Colorado on September 26-27, 2009. Drawdown was recorded in four monitoring wells at distances of 6.34, 15.4, 30.7, and 60.2 m from the pumping well. Continuous gravity measurements were recorded with a Scintrex® CG-5 gravimeter near the closest well, at 6.3 m, over several multi-hour intervals during the 27 hour pumping test. Type-curve matching of the drawdown data performed assuming Neuman's solution yields transmissivity T, specific yield Sy, and elastic component of storativity S estimates of 0.018 m2s-1, 0.041, and 0.0093. The gravitational response to dewatering was modeled assuming drawdown cone geometries described by the Neuman drawdown solution using combinations of T, Sy, and S. The best fitting gravity model based on minimization of the root mean square error between the modeled and observed gravity change during drawdown resulted from the parameters T =0.0033 m2s-1, Sy =0.45, and S =0.0052. Conservative precision estimates in the gravity data widen these estimates to T =0.002-0.006 m2s-1, Sy =0.25-0.65, and S =0-0.2. Drawdown conforming to the Neuman solution was forward modeled using combinations of T, Sy, and S. Minimization of the root mean square misfit between these forward models and observed drawdown in the monitoring wells results in T =0.0080 m2s-1, Sy =0.26, and S =0.000004. Discrepancy between type-curve matching results, gravity analysis results, and drawdown modeling is attributed to heterogeneity and anisotropy within the aquifer, and a relatively large amount drawdown compared to initial saturated thickness, conditions which fail the Neuman solution assumptions. In this aquifer test, gravity was most sensitive to transmissivity, less sensitive to specific yield, and insensitive to the specific storage-saturated thickness quotient. Simultaneous deployment of multiple gravity stations during similar tests should better constrain gravity analysis aquifer property estimates of transmissivity and specific yield
An Initial Verdict on Our Fight Against Poverty
The primary objective for conducting the assessment of the social sector is to provide the basis for setting the thematic priorities for the Philippines, taking into account the development requirements in the next five years. The assessment covers four administrations, Aquino (1986-1992), Ramos (1992-1998), Estrada (1998-2001), and Macapagal-Arroyo (2001-2004). It draws upon secondary data and earlier assessments done. The social developments in the Philippines are viewed from the overall context of poverty as the major development problem of the country. The concept of poverty as being multidimensional is adopted in this study. Consequently, various indicators relating to the different dimensions of poverty are used to gauge the performance of the country. The country's performance with regards to reducing the different dimensions of poverty has been generally modest and mixed. This paper also proposes an action plan for the social sector that identifies key strategic interventions for the next five years.targeting, poverty, decentralization, chronic poverty, transient poverty, community-based monitoring system

Use of PIXE analysis technique for the study of Beirut amphora production in the Roman period
Ion Beam Analysis techniques were developed and utilized for applications in the domain of archeology at the accelerator laboratory of the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission. The characterization of Beirut kiln materials, mainly amphorae ceramics from the Roman period, was done using PIXE technique. In two runs with 1 and 3 MeV protons, we measured 20 major and trace elements. Consequently, a classification based on the elemental composition and on multivariate statistical techniques of some 70 ceramic objects was obtained providing the first step of a Lebanese database for future studies. Furthermore, the analysis of carrot amphorae found in Gaul (south of France) showed that some of them were of Beirut products and hence emphasized the role of Beirut city in the Mediterranean trade in the Roman period. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Real-Time Measurement on Deformation Fields of Hole-Excavated Samples under Impact Tension
In this paper, the real-time deformation fields are observed in two different kinds of hole-excavated dog-bone samples loaded by an SHTB, including single hole sample and dual holes sample with the aperture size of 0.8mm. The testing system consists of a high-speed camera, a He-Ne laser, a frame grabber and a synchronization device with the controlling accuracy of I microsecond. Both the single hole expanding process and the interaction of the two holes are recorded with the time interval of 10 mu s. The observed images on the sample surface are analyzed by newly developed software based on digital correlation theory and a modified image processing method. The 2-D displacement fields in plane are obtained with a resolution of 50 mu m and an accuracy of 0.5 mu m. Experimental results obtained in this paper are proofed, by compared with FEM numerical simulations
Suspended InAsnanowire gate-all-around field-effect transistors
Gate-all-around field-effect transistors are realized with thin, single-crystalline, pure-phase InAs nanowires grown by molecular beam epitaxy. At room temperature, the transistors show a desired high on-state current I-on of similar to 10 mu A arid an on-off current ratio I-on/I-off of as high as 10(6) at sourcedrain bias voltage of 50 mV and gate length of 1 mu m with a gate underlap spacing of 1 mu m from the source and from the drain. At low temperatures, the on-state current I-on is only slightly reduced, while the ratio I-on/I-off is increased to 10(7). The field-effect mobility in the nanowire channels is also investigated and found to be similar to 1500 cm(2)/V s at room temperature and similar to 2000 cm(2)/V s at low temperatures. The excellent performance of the transistors is explained in terms of strong electrostatic and quantum confinements of carriers in the nanowires. (C) 2014 A1P Publishing LLC
Does strict employment protection discourage job creation? Evidence from Croatia
Employment protection legislation in Croatia is among the most strict in Europe. Firing is difficult and costly, and flexible forms of employment are limited. Is this apparent rigidity reflected-as one would expect based on standard economic theory-in low labor market dynamics? Is job creation low and hiring limited? Is the job security of insiders achieved at the cost of outsiders not being able to enter thelabor market? The author attempts to answer these questions by examining job flows. If the employment protection legislation is binding, then job and worker turnover should be low. He shows that this is indeed the case. Hiring is limited and the average job tenure is very long in Croatia. Job destruction is low, however job creation is still lower. The result is accumulation of unemployment, in large part due to new labor market entrants not being able to find a job. The high degree of job protection also seems to strengthen the bargaining position of insiders and results in relatively high wages. So, wages in Croatia are higher than among its competitors, even after adjusting for productivity. These high labor costs are likely to contribute to limited job creation in existing firms, but also are likely to discourage the entry of-and thus job creation in-new firms. The author presents evidence that firm growth has been indeed limited in Croatia, contributing to the low employment level. The author examines other potential causes of high unemployment in Croatia (the unemployment benefit system, labor taxation, the wage structure, and skill and spatial mismatches). He argues that they do not play a substantial part in accounting for poor labor market outcomes in Croatia. The author concludes that the stringent employment protection legislation is the key labor market institution behind low job creation and high unemployment. Based on this he recommends specific measures aimed at liberalizing the labor market to foster job creation and employment.Labor Management and Relations,Labor Policies,Labor Markets,Environmental Economics&Policies,Trade Finance and Investment,Labor Markets,Labor Management and Relations,Labor Standards,Banks&Banking Reform,Environmental Economics&Policies
