Osobny rozdział traktuje o należącym do rodziny taj-kadajskiej języku ludu Sui, rozmieszczeniu dialektów, fonologii, słownictwie i gramatyce. W dalszej kolejności umieszczono zestawy map i fotografii wykonanych w trakcie badań terenowych. This dissertation is the first English language study on the subject of the original writing system developed by the Sui ethnic group. The most important and extensive part of the study is occupied by a dictionary of Sui script characters. Other contents provide characteristics of the Sui script and the books of Sui – divinatory utensils that function as its major medium. Those characteristics include various theories on the origin of the Sui script, a typological classification of Sui characters, a classification of the books and their internal structure, an analysis of Chinese and indigenous contents of the books, as well as translations of their selected fragments. The secondary objective of this dissertation is to present the virtually unknown ethnic group. For this reason, the first chapter is devoted to the concise presentation of selected characteristics of Sui people, including their natural environment, living conditions, social organization, traditional customs, beliefs, as well as history and oral literature. A separate chapter deals with the Sui language, its dialects, phonology, vocabulary and grammar. The study is complemented by an afterword, which briefly enumerates perspectives on future research concerning the Sui ethnic group, as well as sets of maps and photographs made during this author's field research

<i>Japonica</i> in the archives left after Bronisław Piłsudski in Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Cracow (10). Motonaga Murao and his Postcard Message

The tenth installment of the series introducing Japanese documents preserved with Bronisław Piłsudski’s archives in the Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Cracow focuses on a postcard message written in refined cursive script style labeled草書体 sōshotai (not necessarily correctly translated as ‘grass script’) quite difficult to decipher. When deciphered, the message seemed easy to translate but a reconstruction of possible sequence of events proved necessary. The author of the message and the calligraphy was Motonaga Murao, a high-ranking state servant, formerly working in the Hokkaido Development (~ Colonization) Agency (~Commission) and Hokkaido historian, educator, and author of several fundamental publications on the island and its development, works on the Ainu included. The message itself is doubtlessly a response to Piłsudski’s apparent request to meet – again doubtlessly – to exchange the knowledge and experience concerning the people of interest to both: the Ainu. The installment provides also information on Murao and his accomplishments

Druga część, Studies on the manuscript, składa się z trzech rozdziałów, czterech indeksów oraz pięciu dodatków. The present dissertation is devoted to the reconstruction of handwritten lexicographic notes compiled in 1920s by a Russian orientalist Nikolay Nevskiy, henceforth the Materials. The Materials are an unfinished draft of a trilingual dictionary of Miyakoan, a seriously endangered minority language native to the Miyako islands in the Sakishima subarchipelago in the Ryukyus, Japan. This draft is a source of paramount importance to the documentation and revitalization of Miyakoan and, by extension, to the study of Japonic languages in general. This author’s Ph.D. project has been the first systematic and successful attempt at an academic publication of Nevskiy’s dictionary. One part of the dissertation, entitled The reconstructed dictionary, is essentially a faithful reconstruction of the Materials minimally edited for legibility, consistency and an overall user-friendliness. The other part, Studies on the manuscript, consists of three chapters, four indeces and five appendices. Chapter One discusses the background of the Materials and their lexicographic content. Chapter Two involves an original description of Miyakoan from the 1920s based on the data recovered from Nevskiy’s dictionary. Chapter Three aims at establishing the merit of the Materials against the background of other achievements in Ryukyuan linguistics, as well as the value of the reconstruction, editing and future publishing of the source. A Miyakoan-English wordlist based on the Materials has also been appended to the dissertation. In all likelihood, it is the first Miyakoan-English lexicographic source to have ever been published

The objective of the dissertation is showing that personal names constitute a legitimate field of interest and a valuable pool of data for language policy (and planning), as well as proposing how the planning of personal names might constitute a special subfield of language planning in general. Personal name policies have been analysed in their various aspects: the decision-makers, their targets, the names as objects, motivation, objectives, methods, effects and implied assumptions. An attempt is also made to categorise language policies in the sphere of personal names cross- culturally; these policies have been derived mainly from the so-called Western cultural circle. To this end, numerous examples of specific policies, both past and present, from various states, have been invoked and characterised. First given names and surnames have been discussed separately, followed by name changes that may affects both of these categories. A separate chapter has been devoted to name laws in selected European states. Finally, an exemplary name policy – that of Lithuanising the written form of personal names of the Polish minority in Lithuania – is discussed as a case study

Adam Mickiewicz University The paper aims at introducing the results of research on the cultures and languages of the aboriginal peoples of the island of Sakhalin, the Lower Amur Region (Priamurye), and northern Japan (Ainu, Nivhgu, Uilta, Ulcha, and Nanai) conducted at the turn of the 19th and 20th century by Polish political exile Bronisław (Ginet) Piłsudski (1866–1918) and at presenting his ties with Lithuania: he used to introduce himself as Samogitian and Lithuanian (besides Polish―here the so-called nested ethnic identity is involved) and especially towards the end of his life emphasised this identity by inserting the name of his Lithuanian ancestors before his Polish family name. His seemingly long-forgotten legacy is now brought back to the attention of specialists with the appearance of the consecutive volumes of his Collected Works. The argumentation and conclusion of this Vilnius University anniversary article is that Piłsudski belongs to the same degree to the history of Oriental studies in both Lithuania and Poland and that both countries involved can only be proud of such a figure in the annals of their intellectual heritage
