Analytical developments in the Wong-Fung-Tam-Gao radiation model of thermal diffusivity
When the thermal diffusivity, , of a thin film on a substrate is measured by means of the mirage method, the photothermal deflection of the probe beam is determined by the heat radiation field contributed by the film and the substrate, heated by the pump beam. A two-dimensional algorithm is here presented in order to deduce the measure of the diffusivities of the film and the substrate in one set of mirage detection from the experimental data
The Countries’ technological levels
The fundamental requirements of sustainable development introduce a multidimensional approach to the analysis of the technological level of the countries, based on the balance
of different needs. Indeed, the economic sustainability requires that manufactured capital, natural capital, human capital, and social capital must be all maintained over the long term, while the conservation of ecosystems and natural resources is essential for sustainable economic production and intergenerational equity. Moreover, the social equity is the basic element of development, and is interrelated with environmental sustainability.
All these consideration are related to the technological development and its evaluation in relation to the processes used in the production activities. In this paper the anergy percentage
is suggested as a suitable indicator of the level of the technological development, in relation to the optimized use of energy. This quantity, which is not a universal indicator in relation to the environmental impact, can be used for economic and socio-political evaluation. As a matter of fact, the anergy percentage is related to the exergy lost during a process, so it can give information on the optimization level obtained by a technology or it can be useful to compare different technologies among them
A study of the Civic Tower in Ravenna as an example of medieval towers' preservation problems
Structuralstabilityis a major item when considering very high masonry buildings made of stones, bricks, etc., that can start sudden structural failures and collapses, often without any obvious signs of warning. A famous example is the collapse of the belfry of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice --the implementation of it began in the ninth century-- which took place in July 1902 a few days after the appearanceof a fissure. This paper discusses the scientific investigation performed on the Torre Civica (Civic Tower) in Ravenna (North-East Italy), in order to characterize its constituent materials, namely bricks and mortar. All this information and relevant data merge in a multimedia database which will help to design appropriate conservation and restoration works, mainly concerning the reconstruction of the apical part of the tower, that was foreshortened ten years ago for safety reasons, starting from the original materials catalogued and preserved up to the present day. © 2013, Società Italiana di Fisica and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
