Stories of Successful Settlement: Exploring Stories of Successful Settlement from a Settlement Workers Perspective
Through interviews with settlement workers and newcomers, three overarching themes were extracted, and divided into several sub-themes. Beginning with the diversity of workers and the positive work environment in the Multicultural and Immigration Integration Services division (MIIS), students in LINC classes show they have thorough knowledge about not only Canada and important, relevant topics to share with students, they also have multicultural exposure and knowledge. They’re also familiar with common struggles that newcomers face when settling into a new country, culture, and institutional system. This study was developed and written in two directed studies courses, supervised first by Dr. Linda Pardy and followed by Dr. Jeffrey Orr. Direction and brainstorming for the project was a collaboration between the student researcher (Darien Johnsen) and Archway Community Service's Multicultural and Immigration Integration Services division

Pressing Matter
This thesis document is divided into eight chapters, each one representative of a step and/or necessary component within traditional printmaking processes. Serving as both didactic terms and metaphoric interpretations, the steps are essential parts of my explorative and reactionary print process, methodically formed through intuition and response. Shedding light on the under workings of my research based practice, influences, and inspirations, each section adopts the traditional vocabulary of print as a strategy to validate the historically under-appreciated single impression (monotype) print and its ability to decelerate viewership. Using the method of “Registration”, I situate my practice in correlation to the land on which I work and live. My “First impressions” on the unique print are aligned with its infinitely distinctive and mysterious characteristics, which support the formulation of the core questions that drive my creative process. The most vital element of my practice, “Pressure”, is an entry point to write more specifically about the (physical) work, which shifts from the outside world to my body, and to the printing press. Chance is unavoidable: It is through “The Reveal” that the diverse potentialities of mediums and materials, as well as the occasionally unexpected variations in the process, display their meaningful impact. “The Proof” is the unique print in all its various states and inclusivity. Inevitably, there are many “Future Editions” to come. Their dissemination and display are dependent on the cyclical elements that enkindle their creation: when one series of work ends, new understandings, gestures and formations unearth, informing the next state. Lastly, the mirroring that occurs when a plate is printed and is revealed in reverse, acts as a reflection. While not knowing exactly how events and decisions during the making process will eventuate, the resolution comes to light by rumination
Extraocular, Non-Visual, and Simple Photoreceptors: An Introduction to the Symposium
This is a pre-copyedited, author-produced version of an article accepted for publication in Integrative & Comparative Biology following peer review. The version of record Thomas W. Cronin, Sönke Johnsen; Extraocular, Non-Visual, and Simple Photoreceptors: An Introduction to the Symposium, Integrative and Comparative Biology, Volume 56, Issue 5, 1 November 2016, Pages 758–763, https://doi.org/10.1093/icb/icw106 is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1093/icb/icw106 or https://academic.oup.com/icb/article/56/5/758/2420636.It has been recognized for decades that animals sense light using photoreceptors besides those that are devoted strictly to vision. However, the nature of these receptors, their molecular components, their physiological responses, and their biological functions are often obscure. Only recently have researchers begun to learn how critical these non-visual or very simple visual responses are to organismal function; and new approaches, including high-throughput molecular genetic techniques, have led to a revolution in our understanding of the evolution, anatomical distribution, physiology, and – in some cases – function of non-visual photoreception in a diverse assemblage of organisms. Historically, these types of receptors have been described primarily among invertebrates, although they were recognized to be present in fishes, reptiles, and birds. Their presence in mammals was completely unsuspected until the end of the 20th century. In the following papers, we bring together specialists from throughout the field to review the current state of knowledge regarding extraocular, non-visual, and simple photoreceptors in a large diversity of organisms ranging from protists to advanced vertebrates and invertebrates.https://academic.oup.com/icb/article/56/5/758/242063
Health profile for Danish adults with activity limitation and/or physical disability
Presentation type: PitchHealth profile for Danish adults with activity limitation and/or physical disabilityPresenting author: Nina Føns Johnsen, [email protected]: NF, Johnsen; M, Davidsen; SI, Michelsen; K, JuelAffiliation: National Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, Copenhagen, DenmarkBackgroundStudies in Canada, UK, Sweden and Norway have indicated that people with disabilities die earlier and experience a poorer health than the general population. In addressing the Danish National Government’s focus on equality in health, this study investigated 35 factors related to health and well-being, health behavior, social relations and use of health care services among Danish people with activity limitation and/or physical disabilities. MethodsThis study was based on data from the Danish Health and Morbidity Survey (DHMS) 2013 where 25,000 men and women aged 16 years or older were selected randomly from the Central Civil Registration Registry. A total of 14,265 individuals answered a paper version or a web version of the self-administered questionnaire including 100 questions on health-related quality of life, health behavior, morbidity, consequences of illness and social relations. Based on an international standard question on activity limitation, 888 individuals (6 %) were defined as having severe activity limitation and 4180 (29 %) as having moderate activity limitation. Based on a question on physical disabilities, 5633 (40 %) individuals had moderate or severe difficulties with seeing or reading, hearing, or walking or carrying things.Selected resultsThe proportion of individuals with good or superior health among people with activity limitation was one third of the proportion with good or superior health among people without activity limitation. Similarly, the proportion of individuals with headache, psychological symptoms, daily smoking, physical inactivity, obesity and infrequent contact with family or friends was twice as high. Similar results were found for individuals with physical disabilities.ConclusionsA smaller proportion of Danish adults with activity limitation and/or physical disabilities experiences a good health and well-being, a larger proportion has an unhealthy lifestyle, poor social relations and uses the health care system frequently, as compared to adults without activity limitation and/or physical disability. People with activity limitation and/or physical disabilities should be prioritized in public health and efforts done to secure availability and flexibility of health care services and primary prevention programs.Main messages (max 200 characters including spaces)Danish adults with activity limitation and/or disabilities have a poor health and social contact. Reflective Equilibrium Theory
In this chapter the author clarifies reflective equilibrium theory. He answers some important questions about it that have not been addressed. The author offers an extended version of the theory. He argues that Hume, Popper, Goodman, and Quine would all have endorsed that extension. This new version, the author argues, constitutes a completely general theory of epistemic justification for our beliefs about the existence and nature of the physical world.</p
Association Hypoxia Inducible Factors-1 Alpha (HIF-1 α) Levels and Epithelial Ovarian Cancer (EOC)
Objective: This study was conduct to investigate the association of the HIF-1α with stage, hystological type of ephitelial ovarian cancer (EOC).Methods: This study is an observational study with a cross-sectional design on 72 women diagnosed with epithelial ovarian carcinoma who underwent surgical staging in a period of 2017 to 2019 in Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital. Measurement of HIF1a concentration was performed and further categorized into weak, moderate and strong and then analyzed with age, parity, history of abortion, ascites, type of histopathology, cancer stage and CA-125 serum level.Result: There’s a significant relationship between HIF-1a expression and stage (p<0.05), where moderate expression of HIF1a was the most dominant with a total of 32 (44.4%) people. Moderate-to-strong expression of HIF1a was found more in patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma than weak-to-negative HIF1a expression. More patients with stage III-IV ovarian carcinoma were found with moderate-to-strong HIF1a expression (51 people). Conclusion: HIF1a expression was found to be increased along with the progression of epithelial ovarian cancer stage where positive HIF1a expression was found more in patients with stage III/IV compared to stage I/II.Hubungan Antara Kadar Hypoxia Inducible Factors-1 Alpha (HIF-1 α) dengan Karsinoma Ovarium Tipe EpitelialAbstrakTujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara kadar HIF-1 alpha dan karsinoma ovarium tipe epithelialMetode: Penelitian ini menggunakan desain case-control pada 72 perempuan dengan karsinoma ovarium tipe epitelial yang telah menjalani surgical staging selama tahun 2017 hingga 2019 di RS Wahidin Sudirohusodo. Mainstream Epistemology
Here the author discusses the relationship between Hume and foundationalism, coherentism, and infinitism, the three responses to Agrippa’s trilemma. What those theories share is the traditional, commonsense and anti-Humean idea that our theories are justified to the extent that they are probable relative to the fact that they (or we) meet various conditions specified by those theories. The author goes on to discuss Ernest Sosa’s version of virtue theory, and Robert Nozick’s distinctive theory of knowledge. Finally, the author argues that the concept of knowledge is of no epistemological interest. The argument is a simplification and generalization of Gettier’s argument against the idea that knowledge is justified true belief.</p
