AS-BUILT RELIABILITY IN ARCHITECTURAL HBIM MODELING

The As-Built Model cannot be considered as a simple three-dimensional mould of the studied reality but as a process of analysis, synthesis and communication of architectural complexity including, in addition to geometric-dimensional aspects, also the historical, aesthetic and architectural features of the building. Consequently, the transparency and reliability issues of the digital visualization constitutes, as well as for the field of archaeology, a matter of primary importance in the modelling of cultural heritage. The increasing interest of scholars in the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to historical buildings has renewed the problems related to the reliability of the As-built, related not only to the relationship between the model and the measure, but also to the other information, for example the constructive technologies. Based on the survey and modelling of some case studies, the paper's aim is to define a reference standard for the reliability declaration of the As-Built HBIM models, which considers both the geometric and information aspects

Modelling and Visualization Issues in the Architectural Heritage BIM

    No full text
Building Information Modelling constituted an instrument of great innovation for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector, involving the entire building process because of the possibility to manage a large amount of data and information. The application of BIM to architectural heritage AHBIM (Architectural Heritage Building Information Modelling) still presents aspects that are being investigated, due to the complexity and specificity of cultural heritage such as the craftsmanship of historical buildings (far from standardization of the elements and constructive modern processes, typical of BIM) and the complexity of the information that the BIM methodology must manage for the documentation of architectural assets. It is proposed a reflection on the BIM processes as a tool for a complex representation of the architectural heritage, where the “all-encompassing” nature of BIM is applied to an existing reality. Taking into account a specific methodological approach to built heritage, the work aims to investigate the potential offered by 3-D modelling and digital visualizations for the study of historical, architectural, cultural and material values of historic buildings

Structural survey for the seismic vulnerability mitigation

    No full text
The survey is an important investigative tool of monuments and plays an essential role in the conservation of architectural heritage. An accurate knowledge of geometry and construction techniques of a building through structural survey forms the basis for seismic vulnerability evaluation and therefore of the consolidation project. The paper presents the case study of Sant’Antonio Abate church in Rieti, designed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola in 1570 and built on a pre-existence after the architect's death in 1573. A 3D laser-scanner survey integrated with a digital photogrammetry app allowed to reconstruct the geometry of the church, highlighting the structural behavior of macro-elements that compose it. The study of archival documents together with the empirical analysis of the church brought into evidence construction technology and techniques allowing to distinguishing between the current status from that previous restoration works, which took place in 1989-90 and in 1994-95. Analysis of mechanisms that could affect different macro-elements, verifications carried out using linear kinematics analysis and a critical study of the construction technology made it possible to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of the church. This meticulous knowledge path based on the structural survey led to the development of a project that, according to the principle of minimum intervention, was only limited to necessary works for seismic vulnerability mitigation

Ricostruire il passato. Per una tassonomia delle ricostruzioni virtuali di beni architettonici non esistenti

    No full text

Smart Architectural and Urban Heritage: An Applied Reflection

The aim of this paper is to present the use of 3D models and augmented reality (AR) to study and communicate architectural and urban values and, therefore, favor the development of dedicated forms of “smart heritage”. The study rises from a reflection on the concept of “heritage”, as defined in the international documents, intended as an evolving idea that puts together tangible and intangible aspects. Moreover, digital technologies favor “phygital” applications where the digital dimension support the traditional ones. In this way, AR allows the superimposition of multimedia information to heritage, respecting the historical matter of the artefacts, and supporting a “smart heritage” application. In particular, mobile AR, with real-time and ubiquitous visualizations, offers the opportunity to show past urban and architectural configurations to investigate and describe the transformations that have led to the current configuration, and consequently highlighting the present historical and architectural values of the buildings. Two case studies are presented: the square of St. Basilio Monastery, with its historical transformations, and the Basilica of Collemaggio, a pivotal building in the rites of “Perdonanza Celestiniana”

TOWARD A NEW POINT OF VIEW: THE H-BIM PROCEDURE

    No full text
Aim of the paper is to present a theoretical-methodological reflection on HBIM, pointed to propose a workflow. The BIM procedure deals with new buildings design, construction, and management, and it plays an increasingly important role in the AEC field. Consequently, national and international studies and standards grow: the English PAS 1192-2 of 2013, the American BIM Forum, the European 2014/24/EU, the Italian “Decreto BIM” 1/12/2017 n. 560, the UNI 11337:2017. However, the HBIM procedure is different from the BIM one, because the HBIM roots on a surveying inductive synthesis process, where the real elements and data have to be critically understood, semantized and modelled, and composed to synthesize the whole restitutive HBIM system. Therefore, the following issues become pivotal: how to define and apply the Levels of Development (loD), Levels of Geometry (LoG), and Levels of Information (LoI); how to describe and evaluate Transparency and Reliability; how to expand the database; how to use BIM commercial software that does not fully supports HBIM. For example, the HBIM model usually does not present a uniform LoD(s) – in particular LOI(s) – (but spotty ones) because it rises from a punctual knowledge. Moreover, the historical-critical information often does not relate to the digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a single object. Finally, yet importantly, there is the problem of the definition of the LoG of HBIM objects – derived from point clouds –, in accordance to the specific modeling aims: in fact, in order to obtain a higher LoG, a different modeling procedure can be chosen, for example for comple geometrical shapes it can be used Nurbs modeling

The convent of San Nicola in Arischia. Survey and knowledge

    No full text
The convent of San Nicola, standing on a site of a former Cistercian grangia upon a hill between the villages of Arischia and San Vittorino, in the L’Aquila territory, appears to be characterized by remarkable stratification and modification phenomena. Through the architectural survey, carried out with digital technologies as well, the aim of the paper is to analyse the architectural features, also carrying out interpretative speculations regarding its historical phases
