Metadata Management in Data Lake Environments: a Survey
Data lakes are storage repositories that contain large amounts of data in its native format; either structured ssemi-structured or unstructured, to be used when needed. Data lakes are open to a wide range of use cases such as carrying out advanced analytics, extracting knowledge patterns, etc. However, simply dumping all the data into a data lake would only lead to a so-called data swamp. To prevent such a situation, enterprises can adopt best practices among which to build and maintain metadata. In recent years there has been a growing body of research about managing metadata in data lake environments. Existing research efforts deal separately with different activities such as metadata modeling, metadata capture and extraction, metadata usage, etc. Nevertheless, despite its importance, a global view about the research landscape about metadata management for data lakes is still missing. This survey congre- gates different facets of metadata management in data lakes and presents a global view along with the technological impli- cations and the required features for building successful meta- data management systems. Besides, this survey summarizes and discusses research gaps, open problems and main chal- lenges facing both industrialists and academics. This survey pertains to the broader field of Big Data and especially to the data platforms that manage enterprise big data assets. Furthermore, considering the parallels between data lakes and digital libraries regarding their dependence on metadata for content management, this study could offer valuable insights to the digital library community, offering them a technological outlook on metadata management
„Palimpsesty alkoholowe” ostrawskiego outsidera Jana Balabána
“Alcoholic palimpsests” by the Ostravian outsider, Jan BalabánJan Balabán was aCzech writer, journalist and translator, living and working, until his sudden death in the year 2010, in Ostrava. His most important work is acollection of short stories It May Be That We Go, which was called Book of the Year 2004 by Lidove Noviny and the Magna Litera 2005 for prose, and was nominated for the State Prize for Literature 2004. Another of his works is the collection of stories titled Holiday. His books are very interesting to the reader, and they deal with profound themes. The author testifies about the way we live, and he often discusses loneliness, which is the default situation in his books. Characters in his works are regular people dealing with regular issues, like poverty, tragedies, loneliness or bankruptcy. Balabán’s books are mostly about people with no roots: alcoholics, intellectuals, parents and their children, people who love and who leave each other.„Alkoholické palimpsesty” ostravského outsidera Jana BalabánaJan Balabán byl český prozaik, publicista apřekladatel až do své náhlé smrti vroce 2010 žijící atvořící vOstravě. Impact of Software Engineering Research in Practice: A Patent and Author Survey Analysis
Existing work on the practical impact of software engineering (SE) research
examines industrial relevance rather than adoption of study results, hence the
question of how results have been practically applied remains open. To answer
this and investigate the outcomes of impactful research, we performed a
quantitative and qualitative analysis of 4,354 SE patents citing 1,690 SE
papers published in four leading SE venues between 1975-2017. Moreover, we
conducted a survey on 475 authors of 593 top-cited and awarded publications,
achieving 26% response rate. Overall, researchers have equipped practitioners
with various tools, processes, and methods, and improved many existing
products. SE practice values knowledge-seeking research and is impacted by
diverse cross-disciplinary SE areas. Practitioner-oriented publication venues
appear more impactful than researcher-oriented ones, while industry-related
tracks in conferences could enhance their impact. Some research works did not
reach a wide footprint due to limited funding resources or unfavorable
cost-benefit trade-off of the proposed solutions. The need for higher SE
research funding could be corroborated through a dedicated empirical study. In
general, the assessment of impact is subject to its definition. Therefore,
academia and industry could jointly agree on a formal description to set a
common ground for subsequent research on the topic.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, 6 tables, journal articl
