    Black womanism in South Africa: Princess Emma Sandile

    Janet Hodgson tells the inspiring story of Emma Sandile (1842-1892)- Princess Emma, as she was known in southern African colonial circles' in a narrative that reads like a novel, but is all true, based on archival sources and extensive fieldwork. Tracing the life of this pioneer of black womanism, Hodgson explores Sandile's early years, her education, and her many achievements as she became the first black woman landowner in Southern Africa and author of the first known work in English by an Xhosa woman. Princess Emma successfully bridged her African traditions with the imposed Western culture, facing challenges that will resonate with readers today.

Disk large, broad, swollen, especially in wet specimen. Body stout, thick (Fig. 4A, B).</p> <p>Abactinal plates round to polygonal to oblong in outline with numerous interspersed secondary plates (Fig. 4F) embedded in a thick, pulpy tissue forming heavily thickened abactinal body wall (Fig. 4A). Plates with high-aspect; mound-like in shape, forming deep but open channels between plates (Fig. 4A, E). Abactinal plates are covered with two to ten blunt to conical spine-like granules, usually forming a periphery around plate edge with only one or two granules/ spines centrally located. Some plates bear enlarged conical, spine-like granules, surrounded by smaller blunt spinelets. Large abactinal clam-shell like pedicellariae present, each with nine to 12 interlocking teeth per valve (Fig. 4E). Pedicellariae located centrally on plate surface varying in size from one-third to three-quarters of plate diameter, flanked by spinelike granules. Pedicellariae occurring unevenly over abactinal surface, becoming densely concentrated in some areas but absent from others. Madreporite sunken, bordered by seven to eight abactinal plates. Papulae, small, four to six, interspersed between plates.</p> <p>Marginal plates wide (W> L), 42–45 per interradius (from armtip to armtip), which become smaller and with more equivocal dimensions distally adjacent to terminal. Large spines absent from marginal plates series. Fasciolar channels present between marginal plates, relatively deep (Fig. 4H). Superomarginals facing laterally, correspond 1:1 to inferomarginals along most of series with one to two plates irregularly offset, possibly because of sublethal predation. Superomarginal plate surface convex, bare except for 20–35 widely spaced, sharp, conical spinelets, which are most densely concentrated ventrally on plate at contact with inferomarginal plate (Fig. 4H). One to two relatively small clam-shell like pedicellariae with interlocking teeth present on nearly every marginal plate but regularly present, adjacent to inferomarginal contact, irregularly present closer to contact with abactinal surface. Periphery of each plate with 15–40 small evenly spaced conical spinelets, which occur more densely at contact with inferomarginals. Inferomarginal plates with ventral facing and more densely covered by ten to 70 irregularly sized conical to blunt spinelets. Higher number of larger, conical, more pointed spinelets present closer to superomarginal contact. Higher numbers of spinelets present inter-radially decreasing distally corresponding with smaller inferomarginal plate size. Pedicellariae, one to four, typically two, identical to the type on superomarginals present on inferomarginals facing ventrally. Terminal plate round, bulbous.</p> <p>Actinal intermediate plates, similar in size, shape to abactinal plates with well-developed fasciolar channels running between plates (Fig. 4C, D). Actinal plate series adjacent to adambulacral plate series with large pedicellariae nearly equal to size of plate on which it sits (Fig. 4C, D), teeth poorly developed to absent relative to those on abactinal plates. Pedicellariae on actinal series adjacent to adambulacral plates occur with less frequency distally along the arm with some smaller actinal plates adjacent to armtip with pedicellariae absent, bearing only three to six spinelets. Actinal pedicellariae occur most heavily adjacent to mouth, becoming less common to absent adjacent to inferomarginal plate contact. Pedicellariae on each actinal plate surrounded by 20–35 sharp spinelets, some round, some triagonal to polygonal in cross-section (Fig. 4C, D). Actinal plates adjacent to inferomarginal plate series covered with four to 30 sharp, irregularly sized, conical granular spines. Some with polygonal to triangular in crosssection. Oral cavity sunken (Fig. 4B, C).</p> <p>Adambulacral furrow spines blunt tipped, three to four per plate, triangular to oblong ovate in crosssection in weakly convex series (Fig. 4G). Distinct grooves between adambulacral plates. Central spines longest and thickest with spines shortest on ends. Subambulacral spines three in two series. Subambulacral spine series adjacent to furrow spines somewhat shorter than furrow spines but comparable in thickness, round to oval in crosssection (Fig. 4G). Subambulacral spine series farthest away from furrow spines shortest, with central spines only slightly less thick than furrow spines with smallest spines located on ends of second subambulacral series. Distinct fasciolar channel separates adambulacral plates from actinal intermediate plates.</p> <p>Oral plates with four to six furrow spines. Oral plate surface with three to four spines per plate (six to eight total on paired oral plates) with one to three spines projecting into oral opening (Fig. 4C). Spines triangular to flattened triangular in cross-section, most are comparable in length to furrow spines but sometimes with one or two that are similar to granular spines.</p> <p>Colour in life is orange.</p> <p> <i>Habitat description:</i> The holotype was collected on hard substrata covered by the gorgonian <i>Eunicella modesta</i> (Verrill, 1883). Other unidentified gorgonians, the scleractinian <i>Lophelia pertusa</i>, sponges, and coral rubble were observed at the collection site.     Handheld-Impedance-Measurement System with seven-decade capability and potentiostatic function

    This paper describes design and test of a new impedance-measurement system for nonlinear devices that exhibits a seven-decade range and works down to a frequency of 0.01 Hz. The system is specifically designed for electrochemical measurements, but the proposed architecture can be employed in many other fields where flexible signal generation and analysis are required. The system employs an unconventional signal generator based on two pulsewidth modulation (PWM) oscillators and an autocalibration system that allows uncertainties of less than 3% to be obtained over a range of 1 kΩ to 100 GΩ.     Biological sex disparities in Alzheimer's disease

    Alzheimer's disease is a highly complex and multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder, with age being the most significant risk factor. The incidence of Alzheimer's disease doubles every 5 years after the age of 65. Consequently, one of the major challenges in Alzheimer's disease research is understanding how the brain changes with age. Gaining insights into these changes could help identify individuals who are more prone to developing Alzheimer's disease as they age. Over the past 25 years, studies on brain aging have examined thousands of human brains to explore the neuronal basis of age-related cognitive decline. However, most of these studies have focused on adults over 60, often neglecting the critical menopause transition period. During menopause, women experience a substantial decline in ovarian sex hormone production, with a decrease of about 90% in estrogen levels. Estrogen is known for its neuroprotective effects, and its significant loss during menopause affects various biological systems, including the brain. Importantly, despite known differences in dementia risk between sexes, the impact of biological sex and sex hormones on brain aging and the development of Alzheimer's disease remains underexplored.     INDONESIA: Jane Austen adalah seorang novelis Inggris yang karya fiksi romantisnya memberikannya tempat sebagai salah seorang sastrawan Inggris yang karyanya banyak dibaca dalam lingkup kesusastraan Inggris. Karyanya yang abadi dan berjumlah enam novel menjadi mahakarya selama beberapa abad. Terdapat beberapa persamaan yang terlihat dalam karya sastra yang ditulis oleh Jane Austen yang menjadikan karyanya unik dan patut untuk dikaji. Oleh karena itu, dua novelnya yang berjudul Pride and Prejudice dan Emma digunakan sebagai objek dalam kajian ini. Berikut ini adalah dua rumusan masalah yang disusun untuk menemukan hasil dari kajian ini: (1) Bagaimanakah plot dan tema dalam novel Pride and Prejudice dan Emma tersusun menurut teori Naratologi A. J. Greimas? (2) Apa sajakah persamaan dan perbedaan struktur naratif antara novel Pride and Prejudice dan Emma? Berdasarkan pada rumusan masalah tersebut, maka tujuan dari kajian ini adalah untuk menemukan struktur plot dan tema beserta persamaan dan perbedaannya yang mendasari novel Pride and Prejudice dan Emma. Data yang digunakan dalan kajian ini berupa monolog, dialog, dan ekspresi dalam dua novel Inggris yang ditulis oleh Jane Austen dengan judul Pride and Prejudice dan Emma. Kajian ini dilakukan dengan menerapkan pendekatan strukturalis dengan teori Naratologi A. J. Greimas. Cerita dalam novel tersebut disusun dalam beberapa skema aktansial dan skema fungsional. Pembagian skema pada novel pertama dilakukan berdasarkan adegan dalam cerita, sedangkan pembagian skema aktansial dan fungsional pada novel kedua dilakukan berdasarkan jilid dalam novel tersebut. Skema aktansial dan fungsional tersebut kemudian dirangkum dan disusun menjadi satu skema aktansial dan fungsional utama yang melingkupi keseluruhan cerita dalam masing-masing novel. Selanjutnya kedua skema utama tersebut dibadingkan untuk menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan struktur naratif dalam novel tersebut. Hasil dari kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa karya sastra yang ditulis oleh Jane Austen memiliki persamaan dalam unit strulturalnya yakni plot dan tema, sedangkan perbedaan terlihat pada aspek naratif lainnya yakni karakter, seting dan lain sebagainya. Struktur plot yang mendasari adalah mencari – menemukan. Sedangkan tema yang disampaikan adalah perbedaan kelas sosial bukanlah masalah dalam hubungan dua orang yang saling mencintai. Dengan ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa beberapa karya dari seorang penulis memiliki struktur serupa. ENGLISH: Jane Austen is an English novelist whose work of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her timeless works, numbering just six completed novels, become masterpiece through centuries. There are some similarities emerges in the literary works which are written by Jane Austen which makes her works unique. Two of her novels which are Pride and Prejudice and Emma used as the objects in this study. There are two research questions in this study which are formulated to find the result: (1) How are the plot and the theme of Pride and Prejudice and Emma novels constructed according to the theory of Narratology by A. J. Greimas? (2) What are the similarities and the differences of narrative structures between Pride and Prejudice and Emma novels? According to the research questions, the objective of this research is to find the plot structure, theme and its similarities and differences which are underlying Pride and Prejudice and Emma novels. The data taken is in the form of monologue, dialogue, and expression from two English novels written by Jane Austen entitled Pride and Prejudice and Emma novels. The study is conducted in structuralism approach by applying the theory of Narratology of A. J. Greimas. The story is divided into some small actantial and functional schemes according to the scenes of story in the novels. The small actantial and functional schemes in the first novel is divided based on the scenes, while in the second novel divided based on the volumes of the novel. After that, the small actantial and functional schemes are summed up into one major actantial and functional schemes to find the major structure underlying the novels. The following step is comparing both major structures in order to find the similarities and differences of narrative structures in the novels. As the result of this study, it is found that the literary works written by Jane Austen has similarities in its structural unit which are plot and theme, and the differences emerge in its surface phenomena such as characters, settings, moods etc. The plot structure underlying the literary works is searching – finding. In the other hand, the theme of the novels is that social class difference is not a trouble for people who are deep in love to start a relationship. It can be concluded that the literary works written by a single author has a common underlying plot pattern and a common main theme
