Reeth Magoo Interview
No full textReeth Magoo (Class of 2023) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez via the Zoom internet-based conferencing software on March 15, 2024. Ms. Magoo graduated from SMU with a BA in Philosophy with minors in History, Political Science, and Law and Legal Reasoning. Although born in Dallas, Texas, Ms. Magoo was raised in San Antonio by her immigrant parents, both of South Asian Punjabi heritage. Although immersed in their culture and Sikh faith, Ms. Magoo’s parents chose to assimilate their daughter into customs and traditions from the United States. Ms. Magoo attended St. Mary’s Hall, a preparatory school in the Alamo Heights region of San Antonio, where she decided on the legal profession as a career. Ms. Magoo applied to SMU, where her father received his master’s degree after immigrating to the United States. Upon arriving to SMU, Ms. Magoo felt an inviting atmosphere due to administration and faculty but felt isolated at times by her peers due to SMU being a PWI (Predominantly White Institution). Joining KDChi (Kappa Delta Chi) allowed her to meet other women of color, however. Working towards a career in law, Ms. Magoo became part of the Deason Scholars and was a research assistant with the Deason Criminal Justice Reform Center

Towards a radically different understanding of experience: Looking for an heautonomous auditory field in film
No full textWhat can be the status of sound in film? Is sound always dependent on image in film? Or is it possible to give sound a more autonomous status? If yes, what are the consequences for the workflow?In the 1980s and early 1990s two opposing propositions about the relation of the audible and the visible in film were presented. For Michel Chion the auditory field is completely a function of what appears on screen and for Gilles Deleuze the externality of the visual image as uniquely framed has been replaced by the interstice between two framings, the visual and the sound.Introducing the auditory field as multi-layered, dynamic, experienced and embodied, the author proposes a phenomenological approach of the audio-visual that moves towards a different understanding of the filmic experience, which has its roots in a phenomenology of auditory experience. In the practice-based research project,Surrounded, the author explored together with sound designer and sound mixer Griet Van Reeth, how the creative process of film-making can start from the auditory field, including inner sound and a heautonomy of the auditory field.</jats:p
Marton, north Lincolnshire: a Romano-British settlement in its context
Get PDFThis thesis seeks to reconstruct and interpret the form and extent of the Romano- British settlement at Marton, North Lincolnshire. The site at Marton has previously been the subject of no formal programme of archaeological research. However it offers a rich potential for applying non-intrusive archaeological survey, and this study is based on the results obtained from a combination of different survey techniques. Although the site has received very little formal archaeological attention in the past, uncontrolled metal-detection has been intensive over recent years. The unrecorded leaching of material, coupled with the diverse range of artefacts known to have been retrieved in detection has been one of the principal catalysts behind the adoption of this survey. The data was collected both from previous aerial photographic surveys and metal detectorists with whom a working relationship had been established, and in geophysical survey and field walking undertaken by the author. Survey methodology and the results of the different components of the survey are presented in chapters 2 to 6. Initial interpretations of the features identified from the aerial photographic and geophysical survey are proposed and the main chronological and spatial trends m the distribution of pottery, coins and other small finds are summarised. Chapter 7 compares the results obtained from the different classes of evidence and refines the interpretations offered for the development of the site through time and space. Specific issues considered are the origins of the settlement, its internal organisation and extent and its relationship with nearby Littleborough. The final chapter compares Marton with other sites in the region and sites of a similar type in Roman Britain. A series of hypotheses are then proposed concerning the nature of the site and its function and evolution in its local landscape
Athlete health in Colombia: an issue of inequality
No full textEste estudio analiza la salud de los deportistas en Colombia y pone de relieve cómo los determinantes sociales les generan inequidades en salud. El uso de la expresión genérica «deportistas» incluye, en este texto, a hombres y mujeres, y se prescinde en él de una doble mención a las deportistas y los deportistas con el ánimo de dar fluidez. Se analizaron tres deportes: tenis, boxeo y ciclismo. El estudio se fundamentó en el enfoque de la investigación cualitativa interpretativa de perspectiva etnosociológica. El análisis de la información se realizó en el marco del enfoque de los determinantes sociales de la salud. El aporte de este trabajo para la salud pública es reconocer o visibilizar cómo las lógicas políticas y sociales en el deporte profesional, que se ha sido promovido como una ocupación que contribuye a mejorar la salud, producen inequidades en salud. El trabajo pretende comprender cómo el deporte produce y reproduce inequidades sociales e invisibiliza todas esas prácticas cotidianas que afectan la salud de los deportistas y los obliga a estar en el nivel que exigen los gremios y patrocinadores deportivos (Texto tomado de la fuente)This study analyzes the health of athletes in Colombia and highlights how social determinants generate health inequities. The use of the generic expression “athletes” includes, in this text, men and women, and it dispenses with a double mention of athletes with the aim of giving fluency. Three sports were analyzed: tennis, boxing and cycling. The study was based on the qualitative interpretive research approach from an ethnosociological perspective. The analysis of the information was carried out within the framework of the social determinants of health approach. The contribution of this work to public health is to recognize or make visible how the political and social logics in professional sports, which have been promoted as an occupation that contributes to improving health, produce inequities in health.
