The effectiveness of the “out of core” discoveries: Serendipity in the R&D of rare diseases and “orphan drugs"

    No full text
Serendipity – the notion of making unexpected and valuable discoveries – and knowledge arbitrage have played a significant role in the debate about innovation and innovation effectiveness, opening a considerable discussion about the feasibility of R&D investments. The chance to detect serendipitous events and the mechanisms triggering it may attract the attention of those seeking greater efficiency in research and those aiming to sustain basic research. Depending on the above, our research focuses on the serendipitous events and knowledge arbitrage in the R&D of rare diseases and orphan drugs to detail the market opportunities and the economic value arising from the untargeted discoveries. The Tigem research center in Pozzuoli (Italy) is engaged as a case study to achieve this purpose. Since no previous researches are available about the serendipity in R&D of rare disease, this paper provides new knowledge in a still underexplored field, offering new insights at both theoretical and practical levels

The Non-contextual Drivers of Innovation: Development and Validation of the 5H-INN Survey

    No full text
Understanding and identifying the drivers of innovation has been considered crucial for many years, as innovating supports local competitiveness and the economic growth of whole systems. Accordingly, the mainstream focuses on geographical and sectoral loci when debating innovation ecosystems, thus neglecting the driving forces behind the innovation, which are noncontextual factors enabling the process. To fill this gap, we propose an integrated framework for identifying the drivers of innovation (different from cultural, geographic, and sectoral loci) that combines the Quintuple Helix Model and the Innovation Process Research. In so doing, we develop and validate the 5H-INN survey as an innovative and valuable tool to be applied independently from “time” and “space.” This instrument, never developed before, is expected to support our understanding of the innovative dynamics and benefit future research and societal development

Exploring the significance of knowledge transfer for facilitating cross-border acquisitions. An extensive examination of current themes, gaps, and potential future research directions

Purpose –The purpose of the paper is to review how knowledge transfer including knowledge integration, absorptive capacity and reverse knowledge transfer in cross-border acquisitions is examined in existing research work. We also propose the directions to advance research in cross-border acquisitions. Design/methodology/approach –A systematic literature review is conducted and related propositions are advanced that is based on scientometric and bibliometric analysis of 146 articles published over 10 years about tacit knowledge transfer, innovation activities, industrial policy effect on merger decisions, top management experience and value creation in crossborder acquisition. First, we searched major themes with the help of Scopus and later we analyzed all received literature with the help of VOS Viewer. Findings – This review facilitates us to identify 6 clusters and main author keywords. These 6 clusters are the underlying six research streams including reverse knowledge transfer (RKT), cultural distances, value creation, absorptive capacity, innovation, and also reference to India and China. Originality/value – Despite knowledge transfer constituting important antecedents and critical factors for the success of cross-border acquisitions, knowledge management in the acquired company through proper knowledge transfer and knowledge integration is not given enough attention. Current literature still fails to provide a holistic picture of how firms strategically manage knowledge post-acquisition. This study is the first to analyse the dynamics of knowledge transfer in cross-border acquisitions. The study is a novel attempt to relate current research themes to emerging areas of cross-border acquisition

From the Dark Side of Industry 4.0 to Society 5.0: Looking “Beyond the Box” to Developing Human-Centric Innovation Ecosystems

    No full text
Both the pandemic and the global climate changes accelerate the need for urgent solutions to guarantee humanity’s sustainable and prosperous future. Remarkably, at the 10-year mark of introducing Industry 4.0, the adverse effects arising from adopting absolute technocentric perspectives are now evident. Scholars and practitioners claim new plans for a future where technology empowers people and innovationworks for business and society. Humans and machines are expected to reconcile and work in symbiosis, supporting the emergence of Super Smart Societies (S5.0), the last ones based on human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. Despite the mentioned, guidelines on how technocentric and human-centric innovations should combine to trigger S5.0 are still missing. Depending on the above, this article aims to design a comprehensive framework based on the Quintuple Helix Model, supporting the design and the implementation of S5.0. In doing so, several prescriptions on howGovernment, University, Industry, Civil Society, and Environment may address the goals of S5.0 are provided

Network approaches and strategic management: Exploration opportunities and new trends

PURPOSE: The analysis of the literature shows that the attempts to conceptualize the strategic aspects of the network bring a significant impact on the development of research on organizational networks. This article aims to analyze the new trends in strategic management, and in particular on the possibility of exploring the network approach in strategic management, through the existing literature and the presentation of the new contributions of the following articles published in the current issue. METHODOLOGY: The article is descriptive in character; thus it is based on a literature review and its constructive critics. A narrative literature review was used to present the main assumptions and features of the network approach in strategic management, along with an indication of emerging trends and new directions. Also the identification of theoretical foundations for understanding the processes of strategic change in inter-organizational networks and the proposition of the way to understand network strategy were presented. FINDINGS: The research included in this issue shows that from a network perspective, business strategy plays an important role in guiding the development of individual relationships and networks. Exploring the network approach in strategic management allows one to adopt the category of network strategy, which can be described through the coexistence of cooperation and competition. IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE: Considerations lead to the conclusion that the business strategy must be expressed in terms of potential changes in the network in which the company operates, taking into account its current and selected position in the network. Despite the fact that the current state of research on organizational networks in the theory of strategic management shows that this approach is already quite well established, on the basis of the analysis of research results concerning the conceptualization of strategic aspects of the network, the existing problems and limitations were identified. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: The main problems related to the exploration of the network approach and the resulting consequences for the definition of the network strategy were indicated. Also, the combination of an organizational and economic approach with the logic of competitive advantage and relational annuity. The demonstration that the network perspective in strategic management allows for a more complete understanding of the strategic behavior of modern enterprises.
