    Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

    Introduction: Capsaicin (8-methyl-N-vanillyl- 6-nonenamide) is the active component responsible for the fruit pungency of Capsicum plants, cultivated for food and also for medicinal uses since ancient times. Besides its multiple pharmacological and physiological properties (pain relief, cancer prevention, weight reduction, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal benefits), capsaicin has recently received attention because of its antimicrobial activity and anti-virulence properties. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of capsaicin on Streptococcus pyogenes, the most common cause of acute bacterial pharyngotonsillitis. Materials and Methods: The erythromycin-resistant [erm(B)/cMLS], high cell-invasive, and strong biofilm producer S. pyogenes pharyngeal isolate SP1070 was used throughout the study. Capsaicin was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich and stored (10 mg/mL stock solution) in absolute ethanol at -20°C. The MIC and MBC were determined according to the CLSI guidelines. Survival in presence of capsaicin was studied by the live/dead assay. Biofilm formation was tested by a microtiter assay and quantified by measuring the absorbance at 690 nm. Cell experiments were performed using the human alveolar carcinoma A549 cell line. Results: The MIC and the MBC of capsaicin were both 128 μg/mL. In the live/dead assay, several red cells were detected as early as 15 min after incubation with capsaicin at MIC; all cells were red after 60 min of incubation. At capsaicin sub-MICs (1/2– 1/16 × MIC), a significant increase in biofilm production and in the number of streptococci adherent to A549 cells was observed; whereas a strong reduction in the number of intracellular bacteria was detected. Discussion and Conclusions: Our findings reveal that capsaicin has a dual effect on S. pyogenes. High-level capsaicin exerts a bactericidal effect, probably due to the disruption of the cell membrane, this result being in agreement with previous studies on Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens; while sub-lethal capsaicin modifies virulence properties in vitro, such as the ability to form biofilm and to adhere/invade epithelial cells. Capsaicin-induced effects on biofilm formation seem to be similar to those observed for a variety of antibiotics that at sub-lethal concentrations can act as agonists of bacterial biofilm production in vitro. Overall, capsaicin-induced effects on S. pyogenes deserve further studies

    Percezione e trattamento del dolore oncologico: esperienza presso un day hospital toscano

    INTRODUZIONE: La cura del dolore fisico è una delle principali ragioni di esistere della Medicina. La ricerca scientifica ed ancor più la presa in carico “organizzativa” di questo primario bisogno sono, da sempre, ostacolati dalla difficoltà della sua misurazione, ad oggi inevitabilmente affidata alla psicometria. La nostra legislazione, da qualche tempo, cerca di modificare il tradizionale, insufficiente, approccio clinico al problema. OBIETTIVO: Quantificare la comparsa di dolore in pazienti oncologici ed analizzare le modalità del suo trattamento adottate a livello locale. MATERIALI E METODI: Dal 1 Giugno al 30 Settembre 2010 tutti i ricoveri oncologici avvenuti presso il Day Hospital dell’Ospedale “S.Giovanni di Dio” di Firenze sono stati registrati mediante scheda ad hoc, riportante, per ciascuno, diagnosi principale, stadio della malattia, presenza o meno di metastasi, patologie associate, terapie effettuate in passato ed in corso, trattamento del dolore, cronologia di quest’ultimo, effetti della terapia. La valutazione del dolore è avvenuta mediante Visual Analogue Scale e Brief Pain Scale. RISULTATI: Sono stati esaminati 203 soggetti (106 femmine e 87 maschi), selezionati su base volontaria, di età 30-80 anni (media 66,8 – d.s. +/- 11). I pazienti in fase avanzata e/o metastatica hanno ricevuto nel 14% dei casi un trattamento di supporto, nell’86% chemio-radioterapia. Sedi di patologia primitiva erano: colon (44%), mammella (22%), prostata (10%). I pazienti che hanno fatto registrare più sindromi dolorose sono stati quelli con malattia localizzata a livello di ossa, peritoneo e fegato. Per quanto concerne l’intensità, secondo la Brief Pain Scale, tra i pazienti con dolore nocicettivo somatico profondo, il più importante, la maggior parte lo ha presentato di tipo continuo (22), seguito dall’intermittente (16), dall’incidente (2) ed infine dal breakthrough pain (2). I pazienti sono stati trattati nel 23% dei casi con oppioidi maggiori, nel 23% con oppioidi minori, nel 18% con FANS e nel 5% con adiuvanti; nel 31% dei casi il dolore non risulta essere stato trattato. CONCLUSIONI: Lo studio sembra evidenziare come, sebbene il dolore sia ormai adeguatamente rilevato, non sia ancora uniforme la sua presa in carico terapeutica. La spiegazione del mancato trattamento, registrato nel 31% della nostra casistica, è forse da ricercarsi in ambito culturale, più che scientifico: l’uso di oppioidi è spesso stato identificato dalla nostra “cultura” in senso negativo ed irreversibile.     Particle resolved direct numerical simulations (PR-DNS) of particle-laden turbulent flow in a channel are carried out to understand the effect of particle Stokes number (St) on their motion. The study focuses on particles which are larger than the Kolmogorov scale. The forces that impact this motion are factored into the discussion. The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is employed for the simulations. The scheme employed is able to resolve the surface of the particle and a method is adopted to account for the exchange of momentum between the particles and fluid as the particles move on fixed lattices. The simulations show that particles with relatively lower St move preferentially toward the wall while those with higher St exhibit a relatively uniform concentration
