I Think I Am Philip K. Dick
For years, noted writer Laurence A. Rickels often found himself compared to novelist Philip K. Dickthough in fact Rickels had never read any of the science fiction writers work. When he finally read his first Philip K. Dick novel, while researching for his recent book The Devil Notebooks , it prompted a prolonged immersion in Dicks writing as well as a recognition of Rickelss own long-documented intellectual pursuits. The result of this engagement is I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick , a profound thought experiment that charts the wide relevance of the pulp sci-fi author and paranoid visionary. I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick explores the science fiction authors meditations on psychic reality and psychosis, Christian mysticism, Eastern religion, and modern spiritualism. Covering all of Dicks science fiction, Rickels corrects the lack of scholarly interest in the legendary Californian author and, ultimately, makes a compelling case for the philosophical and psychoanalytic significance of Philip K. Dicks popular and influential science fiction.Intro -- Contents -- Introjection -- Part I -- Endopsychic Allegories -- Schreber Guardian -- Belief System Surveillance -- Part II -- Deeper Problems -- Veil of Tears -- Go West -- Dick Manfred -- Timing -- Glimmung -- Part III -- Spiritualism Analogy -- Imitating the Dead -- Indexical Layer -- Ilse -- Hammers and Things -- Crucifictions -- Over There -- Martyrology -- Can't Live, Can't Live -- Lola -- Umwelt, Mitwelt, and Eigenwelt -- Outer Race -- The German Introject -- Part IV -- Materialism, Idealism, and Cybernetics -- Startling Stories -- A Couple of Years -- Android Empathy -- Homunculus and Robot -- ALL OF YOU ARE DEAD.
Deletion of vitamin D receptor leads to premature emphysema/COPD by increased matrix metalloproteinases and lymphoid aggregates formation
Deficiency of vitamin D is associated with accelerated decline in lung function. Vitamin D is a ligand for nuclear hormone vitamin D receptor (VDR), and upon binding it modulates various cellular functions. The level of VDR is reduced in lungs of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which led us to hypothesize that deficiency of VDR leads to significant alterations in lung phenotype that are characteristics of COPD/emphysema associated with increased inflammatory response. We found that VDR knock-out (VDR(-/-)) mice had increased influx of inflammatory cells, phospho-acetylation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) associated with increased proinflammatory mediators, and up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) MMP-2, MMP-9, and MMP-12 in the lung. This was associated with emphysema and decline in lung function associated with lymphoid aggregates formation compared to WT mice. These findings suggest that deficiency of VDR in mouse lung can lead to an early onset of emphysema/COPD because of chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, and lung destruction
Letter re: prisoner of war
Letter from Mrs. John Mader, Jr. to Amon Carter requesting information regarding her husband who had been reported missing in action.Dear Mr. Carter: I hardly know just how to start writing you as you are a stranger to me and I suppose you are already wondering just who I am and how I ever ran across your address. Well, a Miss Minne Rager, whose rother is in or maybe should say, was in the same prison camp in Germany as your son, gave me your address quite a few months ago. My husband has been missing in action since Sept. 19 1943 and ther seems to be no trace of him anywhere. I have written to everybody that you could possibly think of about him and there just seems to be no trace of him after the day he was misssing. Now, Miss rogers's brother, also a member of the 36th division. was with him atht he time he was missing and he was reariated a prisoner of war in Dec. of 1943. The Red Cross informed me tha there was just nothing they could do about it so did our district Congressment , War Dept, and Missing person's Bureau. I was wondering if you would telll you son, when he comes home to write to me so that i could ask him a few questiosn. Of course if I hear anyting before then I will let you know. I don't think I will thought, that I will be able to find anthing at all until the prisoners of war return home. I only hope that you son was one to the fortunate ones, that was liberated not so long ago. Hope you don't think I ahve been to bold by writing you I'm really just trying to find out something definite to go me you know. Respectfully, John Mader Jr
