China 1: The Late Qing Dynasty
This chapter examines the ways in which foreign powers gradually developed their presence and control in China in the late Qing dynasty (1849-1911). The chapter also provides some insignts into the ways in which different individuals and groups in China reacted to this foreign presence. The chapter incorporates a narrative commentary of key events and movments and a range of carefully selected and researched historical documents. Questions, activities, value dilemmas and suggestions for further research are designed to encourage students to think critically about the sources presented
Government, Power and Protest
This chapter is divided into four sections and focuses on a particular aspect of power and protest in China, then in South Korea. These include aspects of centralised power and how the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee dealt with individuals who appeared to threaten established power structures by voicing different opinions; the ways in which students expressed disappointment with the slow pace of reform in China; particular student protests for reform and cries for 'democracy' in China; students protest movements in South Korea
The National Identity and the Integration of Minorities
This chapter deals with four aspects of national identity and the integration of minorities in modern China. Each part explores aspects of national identity by focusing on the experiences of minority groups as they struggle to accept or refect a 'national identity'. Case studies are drawn from Tibet, Islamic nationalities,the Miao and Korean minorities who live in north-east China in the Yanbian region. Reference is also made briefly to the issue of national identity and the integration of minorities in Indonesia
China 11: Nationalism and Imperialism During the Republic
This chapter explores the following features of modern Chinese history: the May Fourth Movement of 1919, the leadership of Sun Yatsen and the beginnings of Chiang Kai-shek's dominance of the Nationalists, the development of Communism, the Japanese invasion of China and the violence in Nanjing. It also explores the ways in which the Chinese responded to Japanese imperialism and the victory of the Communists. It incorporates narrative commentary of key events and movements with a range of carefully selected and researched historical documents. Revolution in Culture 1912 – 1949
This chapter explores the desires for modernisation and change in the cultural life of China. It examines some key features of the the New Culture Movement, the May Fourth Movement and Communist Party ideology wiith reference to literature and art. Then this chapter focuses on the more philosophical cultural responses to social and cultural change by exploring propaganda and the statements of individuals various political persuasions about religion and morality
