    Global supply chain strategies in the fashion industry

    This doctoral dissertation is focused on the fashion industry, one of the most important sectors in the Italian economy that plays an important role at international level. This field of research is particularly interesting because the fashion industry is a context characterized by different and complex Supply Chains, both in terms of fragmentation of production activities and of geographical dispersion of the actors involved. This industry is also particularly interesting considering the context of uncertainty in which companies have to compete. The high demand volatility, the compressed product life cycles and the impulsive purchasing behaviours of consumers represent additional complexity sources for fashion Supply Chains. The fashion system is an important constituent of the Italian industrial structure with a strong tradition of local production, developed in industrial districts with very specific inter-company synergies. But there are also many important multinational groups that become over time important business models for all the fashion companies in the international context. In particular, this research provides evidence on how fashion companies are pursuing different strategies in order to become global and competitive players. In fact, globalization as a phenomenon of progressive growth of companies interactions in different economic areas of the world, has been identified as an important issue due to the acceleration of trade liberalization and the diffusion of communication and information technologies. The globalization has brought changes in the international configuration of the Supply Chain, becoming an important issue to be considered also by the fashion companies. This research, studying companies operating in the Italian fashion industry, intends to offer an original contribution on the issue by analysing which strategies of internalization of their Supply Chains Italian fashion companies implement to remain competitive in a global context. The existing literature was examined in relation to the Supply Chain strategies of production and distribution pursued by companies in the fashion industry. Based on this literature review, different Supply Chain Strategies were identified, characterized by some intrinsic characteristics, namely: brand, product, production and distribution channels. In literature several authors expressed the need to study how to align the Supply Chain strategy with the critical success factors (CSFs) and the competitive priorities of the company to achieve the competitive advantage. This research provides evidence on how the internationalization strategies of fashion Supply Chains are related to companies’ critical success factors. Finally, the research has also focused on the capabilities literature, highlighting which subset of capabilities company should acquire in order to develop different strategies of Supply Chain internalization in the fashion industry. In particular, the research focused on Dynamic Capabilities, pointing out the importance of these capabilities in the fashion industry and providing valuable insights to explain the sources of company’s advantage in a global context. Different research methodologies were selected. At first, a case-study method has been selected according to the exploratory nature of the research. Three case studies were conducted to understand and analyse the globalization strategies implemented, characterized in terms of product, brand and production and distribution channels, and to figure out significant connections with the critical success factors and the dynamic capability in the fashion industry. These case studies were the base for the development of a second phase of the study, based on a survey. From the academic point of view, the research made it possible to identify different supply chain strategies to internationalize production and distribution channels in the fashion industry. The research extended also knowledge on how different supply chain strategies support different critical success factors. Moreover, the Dynamic Capability approach has been applied in the field of fashion industry to better explain the sources of competitive advantage, this way representing an original academic contribution and a useful support for managers to maintain competitiveness.La presente tesi di dottorato si inserisce nell’ambito di ricerca riguardante il settore Moda, uno dei campi di eccellenza dell'economia italiana che riveste un ruolo di primaria importanza a livello globale. Tale ambito di ricerca è apparso particolarmente interessante in quanto il settore Moda rappresenta un contesto caratterizzato da filiere diversificate e complesse, sia in termini di frammentazione delle attività produttive che di dispersione geografica degli attori che vi operano. Il settore inoltre risulta essere particolarmente interessante considerato il contesto di incertezza in cui le aziende si trovano ad operare. L'elevata volatilità della domanda, i cicli di vita dei prodotti compressi in soli pochi mesi o, nei casi più estremi, in poche settimane e il comportamento d'acquisto impulsivo da parte dei consumatori rappresentano un’ulteriore fonte di complessità per le reti del sistema Moda. La diffusione dell’industria della Moda interessa il territorio italiano nel suo complesso, sebbene vada segnalata la presenza di vere e proprie concentrazioni locali di industrie del settore in distretti industriali, caratterizzati da sinergie inter-aziendali. Non mancano inoltre veri e propri gruppi multinazionali, diventati con il passare del tempo dei modelli di business di riferimento per tutte le aziende della Moda del panorama internazionale. Nello specifico tale ricerca ha approfondito il tema dell’internazionalizzazione delle reti di produzione e distribuzione, fornendo evidenza su come le aziende del settore Moda stiano perseguendo diverse strategie al fine di diventare attori globali e competitivi. Infatti, la globalizzazione, intesa come fenomeno di crescita progressiva delle relazioni tra imprese in diverse aree economiche del mondo, si è affermata in un contesto planetario caratterizzato da un'accelerazione dei principi del libero mercato e della diffusione di tecnologie della comunicazione e dell’informazione, contribuendo a determinare mutamenti di vasta portata nella geografia economica internazionale e nella configurazione delle Supply Chain. Di conseguenza l'oggetto della ricerca, che ambisce ad identificare l'esistenza di diverse strategie di Supply Chain per il settore Moda in relazione all’internazionalizzazione dei canali di produzione e di distribuzione, risulta essere un tema di crescente importanza. Tale progetto di ricerca ha sviluppato inizialmente un'analisi della letteratura inerente alle strategie di Supply Chain Management perseguite dalle aziende del settore Moda. Sulla base di tale analisi della letteratura, è stata proposta una mappatura delle strategie di Supply Chain del settore in relazione alle caratteristiche intrinseche della stesse Supply Chain - ovvero il brand, i canali di produzione e di distribuzione ed il prodotto - che ha evidenziato una carenza di una visione strategica trasversale nella definizione di tali strategie, che consideri contemporaneamente aspetti legati sia alla parte a monte che a valle della Supply Chain. Inoltre, l'analisi della letteratura ha messo in evidenza l'importanza di identificare quali siano le diverse priorità competitive ritenute dalle aziende importanti ai fini del raggiungimento del vantaggio competitivo in un contesto internazionale e quali siano le relazioni esistenti tra le scelte intraprese dalle aziende in merito alle strategie di internazionalizzazione delle Supply Chain. Infine, l'ultima parte della ricerca si è concentrata sullo studio delle capability che un'azienda dovrebbe acquisire e possedere a seconda delle scelte di internazionalizzazione effettuate. In particolare la ricerca si è focalizzata sulle capability di tipo dinamico, evidenziando, da un lato, l’importanza di adottare una prospettiva che consideri tali capability per l'industria della Moda, dall’altro, una sostanziale carenza degli studi su questa tematica nel settore considerato. La ricerca ha quindi approfondito quali siano le competenze e le abilità che permettono ad un’azienda di creare nuovi prodotti e/o processi al fine di rispondere alle mutevoli condizioni del mercato globale. La letteratura sottolinea infatti il crescente contributo che il filone di ricerca inerente alle Dynamic Capability può apportare al miglioramento dei vantaggi competitivi di un'azienda, permettendo di far fronte alla sfida dettata dalla nascita di mercati globali. Tale lavoro ha quindi permesso di identificare quali capacità dinamiche dovrebbero essere acquisite dalle aziende di un'industria globale come quella della Moda. La ricerca sulle suddette tematiche è stata condotta utilizzando diverse metodologie di ricerca. In un primo momento, considerata la natura esplorativa dello studio è stata scelta la metodologia di ricerca del multiple case studi, realizzando tre casi di studio in importanti aziende del settore Moda, al fine di comprendere e caratterizzare le strategie messe in atto dalle aziende del settore ed approfondire la relazione esistente tra tali strategie, caratterizzate in termini di prodotto, brand e canali di produzione e di distribuzione, con i Fattori Critici di Successo e le capability di tipo dinamico. Sulla base dei risultati ottenuti ed in base alle indicazioni della letteratura è stato sviluppata successivamente una fase più quantitativa attraverso la realizzazione di un questionario, nella quale sono state approfondite le tematiche sopra indicate. Dal punto di vista accademico le analisi dei dati, raccolti attraverso gli strumenti dei casi di studio e del questionario, nonché l'analisi della letteratura scientifica di riferimento, hanno permesso di identificare differenti strategie di Supply Chain nel campo dell'internazionalizzazione dei canali di produzione e di distribuzione del settore Moda. Tali strategie sono poi state caratterizzate caratterizzate in base ai Fattori Critici di Successo di riferimento, aspetto spesso scarsamente investigato in letteratura. Inoltre l'approccio di Dynamic Capability è stato declinato nel settore della Moda al fine di dettagliare le fonti di vantaggio competitivo delle aziende dell'industria della Moda, rappresentando in tal senso un contributo originale per la letteratura del settore e un supporto ai manager di tale industria al fine di mantenere la competitività dell'azienda. In tale ambito lo studio ha permesso quindi di identificare un punto di collegamento tra la letteratura tipica del Supply Chain Management con quella relativa all'innovazione organizzativa attraverso l'identificazione dei punti in comune tra strategie di Supply Chain e Dynamic Capability implementate

    Global–local supply chain configurations for different production strategies: a comparison between traditional and customized productions

    Purpose – Supply chain (SC) configuration has gained increased acceptance as an important issue when evaluating new customization possibilities and this evidence has contributed to the strengthening of the debate between global vs local production locations. This work contributes in enrichment of this topic by studying how local or global SC location decisions influence performances by considering a SC point of view, in terms of cost and time, in traditional and customized productions. Design/methodology/approach –Adiscrete event simulation approach, based on experimentation through executable configurations, was used to evaluate different SC scenarios for customized as well as traditional products within the footwear industry. Findings – The results indicated that to identify proper SC locations, existing trade-offs between the time and cost performances should be studied, avoiding the evaluation of a single performance independently and, instead, adopting a complete SC point of view while considering these performances. Research limitations/implications – This evidence has contributed to the reinforcement of the discussion between far-shore destinations vs near-shore production locations. Further studies are encouraged to adopt the present model, in which addition of other variables such as specific manufacturing competences to differentiate suppliers, both local and global suppliers, or the possibility of realizing special types of product customization required by final consumers can be done. Practical implications – The paper contributes to the academic and practitioners’ debate by proposing a systemic approach to assess SCs’ performances in customized contexts and to compare them to traditional collections. Results indicate that cost and time performance must find a balance that does not necessarily correspond to an exclusively local or global production. Originality/value – This work contributes to the SC configuration issue by considering the trade-off between efficiency and effectiveness (i.e. SC costs and SC times) for customized productions by reviving and enriching it with an SC perspective in customization contexts

    Drivers, barriers and supply chain variables influencing the adoption of the blockchain to support traceability along fashion supply chains

    The critical role of blockchain technology in ensuring a proper level of traceability and visibility along supply chains is increasingly being explored in the literature. This critical examination must focus on the factors that either encourage or hinder (i.e. the drivers or barriers) the implementation of this technology in extended supply chains. On the assumption that the blockchain will need to be adopted at the supply chain level, the enabling factors and the contingent variables of different supply chains must be identified and analysed. The appropriate identification of supply chain partners is becoming a critical factor of success since the globalization of supply chains makes their management and control increasingly difficult. This is particularly true of the fashion industry. Five blockchain providers and seven focal companies working in the fashion industry were interviewed to compare their different viewpoints on this topic. The results highlight which drivers, barriers, and supply chain variables impact the implementation of the blockchain and specific research propositions are formulated

    Risk management in green building: a review of the current state of research and future directions

    There has been considerable interest in investigating risk factors in Green Building (GB) projects, with increasing debates in recent years. This study aims to investigate tendencies and identify gaps in the GB risk literature, which can define future research guidelines, with an extensive analysis of the latest contributions. A systematic literature review was conducted by analyzing 64 relevant studies from 2006 to 2020. The results revealed that the GB risk topic is somewhat nascent but growing and almost limited to several countries, including Singapore, the USA, Australia, and China. Notably, this research discovered and classified the main themes of GB risk studies: (1) identify risk factors in implementing GB projects, (2) create risk assessment models for GB projects, (3) study according to specific types of GB risks, and (4) investigate risks in green retrofit projects. Also, a comprehensive list of GB risk factors was provided that could be a helpful reference for industry prac- titioners and future researchers. Furthermore, this research identified gaps in the current literature, such as inconsistency in identifying GB risk factors, lack of investigation of the relationship between GB risks and project outcomes, and lack of exploring in cross-coun- try or developing countries. Finally, this research suggested future research directions to enrich the literature. Thus, this study contributes a valuable platform for both practitioners and researchers to comprehend the development of the GB risk literature
