SMC Education Professor and Acclaimed Writer Raina Léon Named Poet in Residence at MoAD
KSOE Professor Raina Léon has been named a Poet in Residence at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco beginning September 1. Léon is the acclaimed author of three poetry collections, Canticle of Idols, Boogeyman Dawn, and sombra :dis(locate); and the chapbook profeta without refuge. In addition, she is a Cave Canem graduate fellow and a member of the Carolina African American Writers’ Collective, the national LatinX poetry workshop CantoMundo, and the socially engaged writers association Macondo. Léon said she was honored by this recognition, which she shares with Tongo Eisen-Martin, as MoAD’s inaugural Poets in Residence. “It is incredibly fulfilling to be seen as a poet and as an educator in the fullness of my life, and in that full, black experience, be fostered in flourish.” Leon will write poetry influenced by the museum’s exhibits and teach workshops to students through a partnership with Oakland’s ARISE High School
Sisters by Raina Telgemeier
Telgemeier, Raina. Sisters. New York: Scholastic, 2014. Print. In this graphic novel, Telgemeier tells the story of two sisters - namely herself, Raina, and her sister, Amara. Raina dreams of the day she will become a big sister but, when that day arrives, it is nothing like she imagined. Her younger sister likes to play by herself, is always cranky and does not want much interaction with anybody, including the long-lost cousins they visit. We watch as the family grows bigger in an apartment that seems to shrink. Tight quarters do not help the relationship between Raina and Amara especially when each girl wants her own privacy. In a story told over a long family road trip mixed in with memories from the past, Raina comes to see maybe having a sister, even one who is different than she expected, is maybe not so bad after all.Telgemeier’s drawing will delight readers with her characteristic colourful pictures that are easy to absorb and understand. Young readers will know when the author is in the present tense and when she is relating a story in the past as the colours of the pages turn a time-worn yellow. This makes the jumping back and forth in time a smooth transition for readers. In a story that is relatable about siblings, family life and growing up, young readers will find her humour funny and timely. This book is a must-have for every school and public library.Highly recommended: 4 out of 4 starsReviewer: Shawna ManchakowskyShawna Manchakowsky recently completed her MLIS at the University of Alberta. When she is not working at Rutherford Library as a Public Service Assistant, she can be found with her husband parenting her two young girls; avoiding any kind of cooking; and reading for her two book clubs. In between book club titles, she tries to read as much teen fiction as she can get away with
Estimating Vaccine Coverage from Serial Trivariate Serologic Data in the Presence of Waning Immunity
Introduction: Vaccine coverage data are typically collected through vaccine registers and retrospective surveys. Alternatively, cross-sectional serosurveys enable direct estimation of vaccine coverage from antibody prevalence by exploiting correlated seropositivity for multi-antigen vaccines. Here, we extend previous methods by accounting for temporal antibody decline in estimating vaccine coverage for measles-mumps-rubella vaccine using serial serosurvey data. Methods: We introduce a Markovian cohort model of antibody waning and boosting applied to dichotomous seropositivity data for measles, mumps, and rubella. Simulation studies are used to test model identifiability and to explore bias induced by previous methods that ignore waning. The cohort model is then fitted to three Australian serosurveys, entailing estimates of vaccine coverage from routine and catch-up vaccination as well as waning rates for each antigen. Results: The simulation results show that the cohort model is identifiable and qualitatively captures the decline in seropositivity observed in older children. When fitted to all three Australian surveys, the estimated seroconversion and waning parameters are similar to estimates based on recent meta-analyses, whereas the coverage estimates appear consistent with previous Australian survey-based estimates. Discussion: We show that previous methods of estimating coverage from serological data can be improved by fitting a cohort model with waning and boosting processes to serial serosurvey data, furthermore yielding estimates of more parameters of interest such as rates of waning. In settings where serial serosurvey data is available, our method could be duplicated or applied to related questions such as coverage in routine two-dose schedules or from other combination vaccines.JGW acknowledges partial support from an NHMRC CRE (Grant No. APP1031963). An update on adult vaccination against pneumococcal disease - Proceedings of a Public Forum
Researchers, policy makers, healthcare professionals, advisory groups and industry representatives reviewed the latest research and discussed future directions at a forum on adult vaccination against pneumococcal disease on 29-30th August, 2011 at UNSW in Sydney, Australia. The Forum was organized and chaired by Professor Raina MacIntyre with sponsorship from CSL Biotherapies.
Hosted by the School of Public Health and Community of Medicine at UNSW, the forum featured national and international speakers including Professor David Goldblatt, Professor Peter McIntyre, Professor Peter Richmond and Dr John Grabenstein. This report describes some of the key messages and issues discussed at the forum

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERTUSSIS SYMPTOMATOLOGY, INCIDENCE AND SEROLOGY IN ADOLESCENTS
Adolescents have an unknowntrue incidence of pertussis and are important reservoirs of transmission. We
evaluated the incidence of coughing illnesses, serologic evidence of recent infection and the relationship
between symptomatology and serology in adolescents. A retrospective respiratory questionnaire and antipertussis
toxin immunoglobulin G measurementwas undertaken in a convenience sample of adolescents
and was repeated one year later. The US Centers for Disease Control clinical case definition of pertussis
was used. At least a third of coughing illnesses met the CDC clinical case definition. Symptoms correlated
with serology. Pertussis was endemic with a high annual incidence of new infection
Protecting Australia and the region from emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
The world is facing unprecedented threats from epidemics. In 2014 Ebola showed that issues such as quarantine, personal protective equipment and improved health system capacity are just as critical as drugs and vaccines, yet these are under-researched. Professor MacIntyre is an international expert epidemic control. She will lead a strategic research program to improve control of emerging and re-emerging infections, using her expertise in vaccines, personal protective equipment and biosecurity.$AUD 785,383.55Research FellowshipsResearch Fellowshi
